Self Reflection
- Now that it’s over, what are my first thoughts about this overall project? Explain the positives and negatives.
There is too much content to search and need to query, and the points that social and English teachers focus on are different. This has caused me to feel overwhelmed and unable to understand what this project is going to do. However, the research we have made allows us to better understand the background of our topic. And let us have some social campaign ideas, which laid the foundation for the campaign behind us, and thus let us know the importance of understanding and opposing racial discrimination.
- What were some of the most interesting discoveries I made while working on this project? About the question? Or about myself? Or about others?
The most interesting thing is that the group members share all our racist stories, which resonate and start to be interested in this project. And through research, we know that it is very difficult to solve racial discrimination, but we can learn and let children get the education, so that children can change the concept of parents and elders, thus alleviating racial discrimination. And we want to make people as interested in our topic as possible so that we can influence the people around us.
- What were some of my most challenging moments and what made them so? How can these challenges be overcome if a similar situation arises in the future?
I personally think it is the research part because there are a lot of websites and content on the Internet, but it doesn’t match the content we need to search, which leads to a lot of time spent on research, which is a waste of time. And generally, the content of those articles in research is particularly long, but the content we need may be particularly short, and we need a lot of time and energy.
- What were some things about my group members that I am grateful for regarding this project?
I am very grateful to my team members Kelsey, Rosa, and Ella. We cooperate very well, Kyle can always arrange our work, and carefully listen to my suggestions for changes. Team members help each other, understand each other, and always complete all arrangements on time. We also exchanged mobile numbers so that any questions can be communicated by message.
- How did I help others during this process? How do I feel I may have hindered others?
Make suggestions when the opinions are different, and then discuss whether my recommendations apply. It took too long to do research, not so many friends can help in the social campaign
- What should I do differently from a personal standpoint the next time I work in groups?
Keep in touch with the team members, make suggestions in places that you don’t agree, listen to others’ opinions, and ask the team members if you don’t understand.
- How will the learning from this project affect my thinking and actions in the future?
This program can exercise our interpersonal communication, cooperation with classmates, and learn about discrimination and racial discrimination is highly undesirable.
- Do I have any suggestions for Mr. Chan or Ms. Thomasen on how to improve this project?
This project can be carried out separately, social is social, English is English. The content that the teacher focuses on is different and it is difficult to show it in one work. And the idea is easy to mess after the merger.
How humans overcome the hardship in life
Reflection:
2 things I want to improve:
- Some paragraphs would be organized better,
- More background in the intro part.
2 things I did well:
- I use a lot of transition word and effect into the essay.
- Quotes are integrated seamlessly.
Settling Into Peace
- How would you describe the first few years after WWI in Canada? Who was happy, who wasn’t, and why? Evidence?
Workers are not happy because of the low wages and lack of collective bargaining. The evidence in this regard was the general strike in Winnipeg and many other strikes in Canada at the time.
Before these strikes, employers were happy because they had a lot of control over workers and could pay very little.
The veterans were not happy because they worked hard on the battlefield in the country, but there was no feedback. They are also not happy that those who did not go to the battlefield earned millions when they left.
- Was there any point to the Winnipeg General Strike?
I used to point to the general strike in Winnipeg because it deprived workers of their rights. The government was worried that workers would have a violent communist uprising and they decided to fire all workers. If they don’t go back to work, the workers’ rights will be reduced and the government has to step in.
- Why did the Liberals win the election of 1921?
The liberals won because they held a middle ground on tariffs. This makes them dislike any particular province, so it attracts more people, so more people will vote for them.
Canada Divided
- Find primary evidence: How did Canadians feel about conscription? Who supported it and who didn’t?
Canadians have no support for conscription because people know that on the battlefield, they only greet them, not the glory of those posters. Many people don’t want to go to life, and they feel that there are already many people on the battlefield. The war is almost over, and no need to send people to the front.
- What are the messages in the political cartoons?
Berlin is the site of Germany, and Berlin is still a small chicken in the picture. Berlin has become a chicken, and it can be seen that Germany has been weakened because Berlin is the capital of Germany and the largest city in Germany. However, other countries are still trying to send people to the battlefield. It can be seen that other countries are not resisting at the moment, but they are becoming resistant.
- Was the Khaki Election rigged or just better democracy?
It is manipulated, because if we don’t allow him to win again, then more Canadians will be at home instead of fighting, which means that fewer people in the war help me find the image that we should be war rather than party Vote for the vote. UG is helping soldiers fight by recruiting new people and forcing ordinary people to join the war.
- Was the government acting in the interests of the public when enacting conscription?
When the conscription system was enacted, the government did not serve the public interest. Just look at Ginger Goodwin and he ran away because he did not participate in the war. Ginger Goodwin’s death on July 27, 1918, was the result of an unfortunate, but an inevitable encounter with the provincial law. People don’t want to participate in the war because they are not interested in fighting.

Canada Responds to war
- To what extend did Canadians support the war (find primary evidence)?
I think Canada is very supportive of this war. They sent supply ships and soldiers to Europe. They recruited people for the army and trained them so they could help fight.
“Canadians marched and sang in the streets at the declaration of war in early August 1914. Those who opposed the war largely stayed silent. Even in Quebec, where pro-British sentiment was traditionally low, there was little apparent hostility to a voluntary war effort.” “Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden and his Cabinet quickly agreed to meet Britain’s request for a Canadian contingent of 25,000 troops. The government also passed the War Measures Act, giving it the authority to do whatever it thought necessary for the “security, defense, peace, order and welfare of Canada.”
– research from https://www.warmuseum.ca/firstworldwar/history/going-to-war/canada-enters-the-war/enthusiastic-reaction-to-war/
- Search for “Canada WWI war propaganda”, what are the posters trying to make you do and how are they supposed to make you feel? Find some and share your favourites.
Many of them try to get you to purchase Victory Bonds and tell people that they should join the army. A lot of them tell people to save and grow their own food.
- How did the war affect Canada’s development as a nation?
Evolution of a War Economy – “Due to the combined demands of military service, industry, and agriculture, unemployment had virtually ceased in Canada by 1916.”
Impressive Expansion of Scope and Production – “Under the supervision of Flavelle, the Council oversaw the impressive expansion of wartime production and produced a total of approximately $2 million worth of goods per day.”
Organizing Wartime Production – “Canada’s Minister of Militia and Defence, Sam Hughes, initially established a Shell Committee to coordinate production, but its failure to deliver on contracts led to angry recriminations between Canada and Britain and widespread rumours of corruption.”
Taxing Income and Profits – “Most Canadians paid no tax at all, and those who did pay, paid very little.”
Research from Financing the War
Through the First World War, the Canadians left a place in the world at that time, let people begin to understand Canada and recognize the power of Canada.
Conditions on the Front:
- What was it like to fight on land, sea and in the air?
War is dangerous. On the land, warriors often use trenches, but grenades are very dangerous for people in the trenches. And in the rainy days, there is a lot of water in the trenches, which is easy to breed bacteria. Long-term combat may lead to inflammation or disease of the joints of the feet. At sea, large battleships are mainly used for combat. The Germans used submarines but only used to attack supply ships because they had to surface to launch torpedoes. The war in the air is also very dangerous because the aircraft may malfunction, be shot down, or the ammunition is insufficient, but no parachute was invented at the time.
- What are some important Canadian contributions to the war on land, sea and in the air?
A lot of the best pilots were Canadian. It was a Canadian who shot down the Red Baron.
- What are the common themes in the poems? What do they tell you about how soldiers felt about the war?
Many poems talk about the death of people and the harsh conditions of war. Most soldiers think that war is terrible and not as great and glorious as they were told.
SS10 Cause of WWI
- Militarism: Britain, Germany
- Alliances: Russia, France, and Britain are all in a Triple Entente. Austria and Germany are also in an alliance.
- Imperialism: Britain, Germany
- Nationalism: Serbia
- What was the event that directly started the war? – When the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Ferdinand’s Dagong couple inspected in Sarajevo, they were shot by the Serbian youth Gabriel Principe. Later known as the Sarajevo incident.
1) Identify the countries:
A – Serbia, B – Austria, C – Russia, D – Germany, E – France, F – Britain
2) Identify the theme and explain the history:
The cartoon clarifying the friendship between countries and shows the reaction in the case of Serbia being threatened by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. First, Serbia is picked by Austria-Hungary; The third person represents Russia whose alliance with Serbia; then the fourth person represents Germany alliance with Austria-Hungary and finally France and Britain. It can be seen that blue is a camp and yellow is another camp.
3) Identify the theme and explain the history:
The theme of Serbia was nationalism. The Austria-Hungary had some people who were Bosnia nations that wanted independence. Bosnia is highly more as Serbia. Serbia wanted to reunite the Slavic people to form the nation of Slavic.
4) Identify the theme and explain the history:
Three powerful Britain, Germany, and France want to become imperialism. By establishing colonies around the world, they will gain all the resources and control of the colonies. The UK is considered to be the most powerful country due to colonies around the world. In 1900, Germany felt that they were also powerful countries and should have their own “land of sunshine.” So Germany has turned its eyes to the east. But wants to colonize, Germany must go through the British waters.
5) Identify the Theme and explain the history:
As the most powerful countries were overtaking the colonies with the resources all over the world. Then Britain began to build a navy to protect their country. Germany craves to be power so Germany started to build a military to match Britain; having more military meant the strongest and powerful country. Also, Britain also builds they’re military. Militarism between Britain and Germany.
6) Explain the sequence of events.
In 1914, Since Serbia wanted nationalism from Austria-Hungary. Austria was afraid that they would lose part of the Mediterranean sea where the trading area happen. Austria declares war on Serbia. Russians decided to help Serbia. Since Germany is on the side of Austria; Britain and France decided to attack Germany because they noticed that Austria-Hungry and Germany made the balance of power of the two countries.
7) Analysis
Cartoons may be Canada’s point of view, because if Britain is to participate in the war, then Canada, as a British colony, has to participate in the war. The first country to be portrayed as a child was Serbia because Serbia was the smallest country in the First World War. The title “friendship chain” is ironic. Satire that the state only cares about the interests, not really care each other. The cartoon shows the relationship between each country participating in the First World War and the Alliance. It also explains the origin of the war and the causes of the First World War.

Narrative Essay edited
An important lesson in my life
The will is exercised here, the mind is washed here, and the behavior is regulated here. This is an important lesson in my life——military training. On the TV, the neat and mighty army’s lineup make me envious, the neat place made me excited, and the standard and powerful movement made me feel upset. I am looking forward to my first military training in my life. I hope this day will come soon. In China, on August 26, 2016, I finally welcomed this day when I was in Grade 9.
Watching TV, the soldiers walked so easily and neatly, the posture was so beautiful and standard. However, when I really practiced it, I felt hard. This seemingly ordinary and arduous training made all of our classmate’s physical and mental strengths extremely experienced. The sun is like a big fireball and it ruthlessly roasted us. After a while, my sweat dripped down my forehead, my feet began to numb, and my hands were hurting. Standing in the military position, stepping forward, repeating the practice over and over again, so that my legs seem to have been filled with the lead as if I did not listen to my call, always trembled. The hot sun is honing our will, and the hot sports field is testing our endurance. However, we stubbornly persisted, no one complained, no one fell behind, we defeated the sun’s roasting, and defeated the disturbing fatigue. We were proud of ourselves. When the whole body was wet, we gradually matured; in the arduous military training, we throw away the fragility and put on the strong armor. Our perseverance is gradually revealed, and our will is gradually strengthened by military training!
Military training is hard, boring, but our body has become stronger and stronger. When we practiced, we once again showed our patience, persistence, and tenacity. When I kneel down, my whole body weight was on my right foot. After a while, my right foot was numb. If at this time my right foot can move freely, if I can stand up at this moment, if… I have a lot of beautiful assumptions in my mind, but I still stick to the end. When I slowly stood up, my feet seemed to lose consciousness. But I am gratified that I have come up with my tenacious perseverance. Because I believe that persistence is victory, persistence is warm spring sunshine, it can melt winter frost; persistence is summer green, gestating autumn prosperity; persistence is autumn fruit, it shows good luck in winter; persistence is winter Snow, it is a sign of spring hope. Hold on for a minute and the victory will be under your feet.
Military training taught me strong will, military training taught me normative behavior. It is a very bitter movement to lift the foot and keep one position for a long time. In 2 minutes, my feet began to shake, and the raised feet slowly hang down. At this time, for me, this is very tormented! But my feet didn’t touch the ground, even though it was so painful at the moment. Finally, we successfully passed the test of the instructors. In the formal practice, the training slogan echoed the slogans of the students: “One, two, three, four…” I learned to face the courage in the face of pain. In the midst of suffering, I learned to overcome it.
Military training is a precious and rare experience. It has always been written into my memory and has become an indelible part of me. In fact, hardship is the cradle of your success. Perseverance is a kind of power. It gives me motivation and support when it is difficult. It gives me eternal wealth and strength in my life journey. As long as the light of perseverance in the heart is not dim, the leaves of life will never rot.
Core Competencies Self-Assessment
I think this narrative essay indirectly reflects that I am a person with perseverance. This article is a profile of my perseverance, perseverance, and leadership. I think this event is helpful to exercise my healthy mind and body. I was proud of holding on to the military training for the next week, because it was really hot in Shanghai at that time, and it was a test of people’s will. Only by holding on to the end was a victory. I was proud of carrying out military training in the hot 38`c sun every day.
