The food that I usually eat is homecooked, so there isn’t really very much waste in packaging. On the occasion that we get food outside in a restaurant or fast food, they usually come in recyclable packaging. They usually come in plastic or paper containers and bags. I don’t think I have ever gotten a food package that was made of anything else like styrofoam or cardboard. The only time I can think of cardboard boxes is from New York Fries, but I’m pretty sure that’s it. Most companies try to be more environmentally friendly to keep our surroundings safe and healthy. I think that’s why a lot of them switched to paper materials so that they could be recycled safely and not end up in our oceans. The packaging is almost as important as the actual food sometimes. If the box is a really bad and cheap one, there is a chance the customer won’t order from it again because of the packaging that it came in. When we finish the food inside, we throw the package away, maybe in the garbage or recycling if we can. After one day, the package is probably in a dump truck going to the dump. After one year, it’s probably in a landfill, just sitting there. After one year they are most likely buried under the ground in a compact way. Most food waste ends up in landfills where it sits and rots while it releases something called methane. Methane is a damaging greenhouse gas. Food waste is also a waste of energy, water, and packaging used in its production, transportation and storage. Here are some ways to decrease the amount of waste: just eat all the food that you buy or make. If you can’t finish the food completely, then wrap it up, and put it in your fridge for later when you get hungry again. Be smart when you buy food, get an amount of food that you know you can actually finish and won’t end up throwing away. Store the food correctly, improper food storage can lead to it going bad which then you would have to throw it out.
