Fresh New Periodic Table

Explanation

Our periodic table is basically like the original table because we thought the original one was pretty easy to read and find elements already, so we didn’t think we needed to do that much extra to it. The one thing that sets our table apart is that our table is built in the form of a cylinder, because we wanted to represent that even though Potassium and Argon are on completely different sides, they are very similar. That is why using a cylinder would represent that it is a continuous table and not a rectangle. We moved a few of the elements around because we found that moving those elements would simplify the table and make it easier to read and comprehend. We have many patterns such as the further down the periodic table goes, the amount of shells in the atom increases. Another pattern is that the spiral of atoms is in order of the atomic number. Also, another pattern is that the right side of the periodic table has more electrons than the ones on the left. All of the atoms in a family are colored the same so that it is easier to understand which element is part of a certain family.

Define

Our way of looking at the problem was that it was very difficult to find things on the periodic table and we would always mix up which element is which.

Discover

How can we make the periodic table better without ruining the other aspects and patterns of the normal periodic table? What aspects of the periodic table do we want to change and why? How can we improve the periodic table? What aspects should we keep?

Dream

The periodic table tells you many patterns such as how many electrons are in the valence shell; how many shells are in the element and other useful things. I could rearrange the elements so that it is separated by its properties, if it’s a metal or its atomic mass. I feel that using a cylinder would be the most effective because than it would look like a continuous table and not a rectangle. You could use color to represent the different families or if it is a gas or metal.

Design

Our plan would be to use a cylinder because it would be the most effective because the periodic table would look like a continuous table and not a rectangle that ends at the side of the paper.

Debrief

I think I could have been more creative when it came to ctually coming up with an idea for the new periodic table, so that it would look more appealing and neat. I also think we could have added a few more patterns so that it wouldn’t look excaclty like the original periodic table. Overall, I think we did pretty well and I feel really good about our periodic table.
