Can you make a clone of a living thing to an exact replica, by replicating their DNA, and transferring copies of their memories to the clone?

The answer is, Yes-ish. You can make an exact replica of something living, (or non-living which would just be 3D printing). It’s not an easy process but it can be done. There are 2 types of cloning:

  • Reproductive Cloning: “Reproductive cloning is preformed using a technique called somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). The genetic material from a donor egg is removed, so that you are left with an empty egg. Then, a cell is taken form the organism to be cloned and it’s nucleus is removed. This nucleus is then transferred into the empty donor egg. Using chemicals or a mild electric shock, the eg is forced to divide, creating an embryo. This embryo is then transferred into the uterus of the host organism.
  • Therapeutic Cloning: “The process of harvesting stem cells form embryos and using them for medical treatment, these cells are obtained from developing embryos, and they can be used to produce tissue, muscle, and organ cells”

When you clone something is made, it turns out to be an identical twin of the thing being cloned, but it has the same exact DNA! There has been many scientist’s and university’s who have attempted cloning and here are some examples of people who have succeeded and their process’s:

    1. some scientists in Beijing have cloned pets at a very high price, by using tissue samples to get the DNA to use reproductive cloning process; they take some eggs out of a female animal, (of the same species and types [ex. Russian Blue, Cat]), and replacing the eggs nucleus with the genes/DNA form the animals being cloned, and putting the eggs back into the female, which then, over time is pumped with hormonal injections to get pregnancy faster (I think), and then gives birth to the baby clone.
    2. In China, using the technique used to clone dolly the sheep, some scientist cloned 2 long-tailed macaques, Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua. They were made from fetal cells grown in a petri dish and were born in shanghai. They’re identical twins and have the exact same DNA from the original monkey fetus that provided the cells. the one twisted part to this experiment was that they used 149 embryos to get just 2 monkeys.
    3. A Chinese scientist CLAIMS that he had altered the gene’s in the embryo of a pair of human twins making them resistant to H.I.V, although he never gave any proof…..

Now for the cloning timeline:

  • 1938: Hans Spemann proposes mammalian cloning by transplanting an adult cell into the nucleus into an egg
  • 1952: first successful cloning attempt: using a frog embryo and egg to make a new tadpole
  • 1962: John Gurdan announces a tadpole done from an adult cell, triggering the first cloning debate
  • 1963: J.B.S Haldane coins the term “clone” as part of the speech he delivers
  • 1979: Karl Illmenssee claims to clone 3 mice. No one in his lab can repeat the experiment
  • 1984: Steen Willadsen clones a lamb from embryonic cells, the first verified mammalian clone
  • 1995: Ian Wilmut and I Keith Campbell clone 2 lambs form embryo cells
  • 1996: Dolly the sheep is the first mammal clone with adult cells
  • 1997: President Clinton bans federal funds for human cloning projects for five years
  • 1998: 1. Ryuzo Yanagimachi, Tony Perry, and Teruhiko Wakayama clone 50 mice form adult cells,  2. the food and drug administration announce it’s authority to regulate human cloning,  3. Korean scientists announce that they have taken the first steps to clone a human
  • 1999: Teruhiko Wakayama and Ryuzo Yanagimachi clone the first male mice from adult cells
  • 2000: estimates of human cloning range from 10 year to never
  • 2005: Afghan hound named, Suppy, was born as a clone *MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH*
  • 2013: cloned human stem cells were made; scientists and doctors hope to be able to use these to create human organs for transplants!

Even though after all of these amazing discoveries, they will not procced onto cloning humans until they know 100% that the clone will come out perfect and healthy.

POPULATION OPINION OF CLONING, (Only a sample of people):

  • 63% – believe scientists will be cloning people in 25 years
  • 71% – think it’s unethical
  • 40% – say it’s ok to help infertile couples

So, even though we can clone people, that’s only half the question. the thing is you can clone a living thing, and have it with the same DNA and health problems (because of the DNA), but after lot’s of research I have gotten variety of answers but the one the that answered my question, “Can You Replicate Memories and Transplant Them Into the Clone?”, and the answer was, No. Scientist’s haven’t discovered how to transfer your memories to someone else/the clone, YET! ….. Scientist’s haven’t developed a way to transfer the memories efficiently yet, because, memories and thoughts are very delicate and complicated things, but they have accomplished in replicating ones snails memories of being trained, to another snail (they gave a snail the memories of another snail without training the one who got the new memories). Another time was with tape worms, except this time they fed the trained worm to another un-trained worm, which also worked. Even though these discoveries have moved us closer to replicating memories and planting them into another mind, doesn’t mean they will start experimenting with humans quite yet. But they still are researching ways to get closer to being able to.

My Reflection:

  1. leading questions: can memories be copied? will we ever clone humans? can implant your memories in someone else? can you clone a living thing? has cloning been done before? what are the 2 types of cloning?
  2. I used creative commons and the school library online, and gale engage learning
  3. I used my pure curiosity, and research
  4. using a citation tool
  5. it was intriguing and revealing. I don’t know what I could have done better

  4. From a humane perspective, I find it interesting that they can call it safe to attempt/succeed duplicating on animals, but when humans are looked at, it’s titled too unsafe. The notes were nicely displayed flowing with your video(s) & image(s) to create a scientific, extraordinarily, visual masterpiece. Your work ethic is marvelous!!!!

  5. A very interesting topic for sure! I wonder if we will see a human clone in our lifetime…I have a feeling science won’t stop until we do. You put alot of effort and research into this project, great job:) The information was clear and well laid out, and I always like videos for extra clarification of ideas presented.

  6. An interesting wonder question, particularly about adding a person’s memories. You have included a lot of discussion about cloning but I believe you could take this question even further. You could deepen this question by asking “How could memories be transferred into a cloned human?” or “Into what areas should we put our time regarding the possibilities of cloning?” What do you think would be a good unGoogle-able cloning question?
