The novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini takes place in Kabul, Afghanistan around the 1970s. At the time there are a lot of political and war tension in Afghanistan. The Soviet Union invades Afghanistan and everything changes for the main character, Amir. He searches for his true identity throughout the novel. Amir is a dynamic and round character. The thoughts in his mind and actions by him make him very believable. Amir is constantly trying to impress his father with high expectations as a high-class family. I am able to connect to him since my parents also expect highly from me. I do like Amir as a character because he grows up to be my age. I believe the novels become more interesting when there is an aspect of the story a reader can connect to. The way Amir selectively choose when to play and not to play with his servant’s son reminds me of a young version of me. Amir feels as if he is distant from himself and his family. Amir cannot distinguish his true self. The storyline is the most important part of the novel.
The storyline was quite dull in the beginning. The novel starts off with older Amir remembering his past in Afghanistan. A lot of new characters are introduced and in the beginning, it was difficult to keep track of all the characters. Although, the novel started to quickly progress after the Kite Cutting Competition. Leading up to this point I was uninterested and felt like I was being forced to read. The raping of Hassan caught me out of nowhere and instantly brought back my interest. This had to be one of the most exhilarating and important turning points of the novel. It’s not the sexual abuse that changes the story; however, the change is caused by Amir’s actions afterward. The way Amir knowingly distances himself with Hassan when Hassan needed Amir the most. I believe that without this event Amir and his father would not have moved to America. I am interested in reading further and finishing this novel. Mr. Barrington said that the ending was quite tragic and I am ecstatic to see how the story unfolds in the end.
Experience Greek for Under $20
Review by: Kevin Choi
Dinakis Mediterranean Grill is a restaurant that brings that taste of Greek right into Port Coquitlam. Dinakis has plenty of parking space for customers to enjoy. I have never truly loved Greek food until I tried Dinakis. The atmosphere and the delicious food alone makes me want to come back to Dinakis. As I enter, I am greeted by friendly waiters that find a clean marble table for my family. The comfortable chairs added with the soothing orange walls makes me feel at home. The place is brightly lit with subtle lights. The paintings on the walls go along great with the colors of the walls. Dinaki’s is usually packed with a lot of people; however, the servers try to help as much as possible despite the busyness of the restaurant. An unappealing part of the location is that there are train’s that go by behind the restaurant. The train blows its loud whistle one in a while which ruins the mood. Once in a while, the train carts make contact with each other and create an exploding sound. However, the food makes up for the annoying sounds. The menu has a vast selection of different Greek and Mediterranean food although they are best known for their expertise in Greek food. A mixture of different food scents develops an irresistible smell. The food can be classified as expensive although, there is enough food for two people to eat with one meal. Their signature dish, the souvlaki’s are my absolute favorite. There are 4 types of souvlaki’s for example, beef, lamb, chicken and prawn souvlakis. A souvlaki includes a classic Greek salad, two fire-grilled meat skewers of my choice, potato’s with rice, plain pita bread, and two zesty sauces. The Greek salad comes with freshly picked cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, with a shredded creamy feta cheese. The salad compliments the skewers and without each other, the experience would be totally different. I enjoy changing up the type of skewer every time I eat at Dinakis. The meats are tender and full of flavors, it is truly cooked to perfection. Cooking with lamb is known to be difficult to get right. Over cooking the lamb will result in the meat being rubbery and smelly, however, that was not the case at Dinakis. In the rice and potatoes, I could taste the herbs and citrusy lemons which added a nice kick it needed. Finally, a single plain piece of pita bread comes alongside the two dips. I have yet to realize what either of these dips are for. My friend informed me that one is for the salad and the other is for the bread, however, I use it for every part of the meal. The dips are practically universal, I can dip bread or meat in the sauces and they would still taste like heaven. One of the souvlakis is able to fill two people since the food provided is plentiful. Dinakis has been voted 2015’s favorite restaurant in the Tri-City News and without a doubt, the restaurant brings in a lot of hungry customers. Dinakis Mediterranean Grill has reasonably priced food that is delicious and also filling, anyone who wants Greek food should definitely give Dinakis a try.
- Describe your game and how to play it.
My game is a 2D maze game and you use the arrow keys to move your character. The game changes levels once you reach the end of each level. The goal is to reach the final level and beat it.
2. What did you learn while making your game?
I learned to create a game with a program that has many restrictions. I found bugs in my games and learned to fix them as I went through.
3. What challenges did you encounter while making your game?
Sometimes my game wouldn’t work because of the backdrops or something was wrong with the script. I was not able to identify the bugs fast; therefore, my game got delayed.
4. How did you overcome these challenges? Describe your problem solving steps.
I guessed which script was creating the program and I took it out and tested my game. I saw that my character would not move after clicking the start button. I realized that my backdrop color was black and if my character were to touch the color black the game would reset. So my character would start inside a black backdrop which stopped my scripts from working properly. I made the character disappear and it would appear after I clicked the start screen.
Caitlin Ortiz, a softball player lost her Scolarship at Mally College. This event occured on June 6th, 2011. She lost her scholarship because she posted a picture of herself and quoted “‘andd imm put this drink uppp like its my lastt” which is a rap lyric from Big Sean and Chris Browns song, My Last. She deserved to lose her scholarship because she gave a bad reputation to the school. I learned not to post any inappropriate content in any of my social media because they will find it and I will be penalized for it.
