Writing Types

In terms of writing, there are four main types one may use. First off, there is expository writing; this type of writing includes factual pieces and explaining information. There is no opinion or bias in this form of writing. Examples of expository writing are textbooks, news stories and cookbooks. The second form of writing is narrative writing; this consists of characters, dialogue, telling stories and always has a beginning, middle and end. Some examples include stories, novels and poems. Thirdly, there is descriptive writing; this involves lots of description (which is self-explanatory), detail, and is often poetic. Examples of detailed writing include poetry, journals, and writing in regards to nature. Lastly, persuasive writing is a type of writing where an author is sharing a belief or opinion using judgement, arguments and evidence, and wants to convince you to agree with them. Examples of this include ads, letters of complaints, and reviews. There are some pieces of writing that fit into multiple types of writing. An example of this includes It’s a Bird by Christian Cooper; this is a graphic novel that fits into narrative and a bit of expository. It is obviously a narrative piece of writing considering it has characters, dialogue, and the fact that it is a story; though, it may also be expository considering that the factual parts of the story are all true. There is no question that there are problems with racism not only in the United States, but all around the world. It is fact. Though primarily in the United States, it has gone far out of hand with police brutality and the murder of many innocent people of colour. This is what the graphic novel is about. It touches upon racism in America in a beautiful way and shows some forms of racism involving threats and nicknames, though unfortunately these are far from the worst. This story also reminds everybody of the names of who are still in need of justice after the extreme abuse of power by police officers in America. The victims names are important. Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmed Arbery, and all the rest. Never forget them.
