Communication Timeline

The timeline shown below shows the evolution of vocal communication from telephones, to video calling, to live videos and to the current, best technology. Starting off the telegraph and morse code way back around 1830; this was the first way for long-distance, quick communication which was revolutionary. This was extremely significant because now people could communicate overseas. This eventually led to the invention of the telephone around 1870. Similar to the telegraph, there was way for quick communication, the significant difference is that the telephone used verbal communication. Though, this relied heavily on on cords and wires. This changed in 1973 when the first mobile phone came out. Very early models needed around 10 hours to charge for only 30 minutes of call time. Though, it was still a huge step considering it was wireless for even a little bit. After many updates to the mobile phone, came smart phones and Skype. This was very significant because now there was an application for video calling and audio calling. This was not the first video-conferencing app. Applications like this were being created all the time and all had it’s own offerings. After this, Youtube came out. This was an extremely successful streaming site and still is extremely popular. This is significant to communication because video sharing and video calling are similar and it links to live videos as well. After this, there was the creation of the iPhone, one of the most successful inventions of the current time. This was huge considering it set the standard for future smartphones. The creation of the smartphone was also extremely significant because the idea of touchscreen was a huge breakthrough in terms of technology. iPhone then had a video calling application created for their users only; it’s called Facetime. This was important for not only communication, but for business. Having applicationss that could only go on the iPhone would possibly make users want the iPhone more than other products. Then came Zoom came out in 2013, but the significance of Zoom didn’t really show until current time, 2020. So, next would be Periscope’s launch in 2014. This was one of the first applications for live-video sharing. This was a one-way video open to millions of viewers who could respond back with comments. This was important because there were slowly more and more applications with this feature. Then in terms of video calling, there was a new service called Houseparty that came out in 2016. This video calling app had a variety of cool features such as in call games, a friend system, the ability to have locked or unlocked rooms, and some other little features. Houseparty was really popular for a while until it got hacked. It got relaunched, though it is not exactly as popular anymore. Now, back to Zoom. In 2020, Zoom peaked. Due to the well-known pandemic, schools and workplaces were shut down. Zoom saved the day, more like the year, with an application that could allow up to 100 people in a call with just the basic account. Zoom is still thriving and is mostly used for school and work purposes, though many use Zoom to just talk with friends. This also has a neat feature where one can create backdrops in their call which is entertaining. Over time, from the telegraph to Zoom calls, a lot has changed thanks to the fascinating development and evolution of technology. Keep in mind, it’s not over yet, new and innovating ideas are still created almost every day.
