I chose to interview Mahlon Todd Williams who is a cinematographer and artist. For work, he shoots music videos, commercials, TV shows and movies. I chose to interview Todd because I knew it would be a really neat interview because he is a very cool person, and it would be a unique experience. I also am interested in the film industry, on either side of the camera. I learned a lot about future options if I wanted to take a path into the film industry and some ways I can get into it. Overall, the interview was a really interesting experience all around, and I learned a lot. It was also fascinating to just hear his story and how he got into the industry and his journey to where he is today. This is actually the second time I met him, we met once before for a tour of the set for his current project, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. That was an example of potential opportunity, as he is an old friend of my dad’s. This also gives opportunity for future guidance if I do choose to go down that road.

With the help of my dad, I emailed him and we arranged to meet at Cafe Calabria in Downtown Vancouver. We met on Monday, February 17th.

Here are some links to his websites and his work:

Questions and Answers:

Why are you passionate about your job?

He was inspired at a young age when he played around with cameras when he was my age and made short videos with his friends who just so happened to include my dad. He got into acting but then decided he liked the background work better and began filming music videos and has been working in the film industry ever since.

What obstacles have you faced to get to where you are today?

To begin, he didn’t have any family or friends in the industry and didn’t know much about it. He also didn’t have the best grades in highschool. Then when choosing a school to go to, the school in California that he was thinking of going to was around 20,000 and that was way over budget. He ended up going to Concordia University in Montreal for 5 years. There, he made a few friends and lots of connections. Another struggle with this though is that he didn’t speak any French while he attended a school in Quebec. Though, he made it through all of these struggles and thrived.

What advice would you pass on to someone who was interested in what you are doing?

His big way of getting through his career was being in the right place at the right time. He was at a barbeque and met someone who set him up with a karaoke company. Then, he ended up working with Drake where he then met the Weeknd and filmed music videos for them. Another big piece of advice he gave me is to always be prepared and to pay attention. Always help around and be prepared for everything. Pay attention to what people want because that’s really important to adapt to your boss and client’s needs. He found it was really important to take notes as well. Something else he mentioned was to find the best people to make connections with and to train with them and gain as much as you can with them to improve your own abilities, skills, and connections for potential opportunity. Lastly, he said to take risk. Some of his favourite experiences were from jobs that seemed maybe questionable or boring. It’s important to try new things.

Would you be open to further contact from Riverside students and if so, how can someone contact you?

Todd is open to further contact by email. His email is toddwilliamsdp@gmail.com

How many places have you travelled for work purposes and where are some of those places?

Todd has travelled through Canada, US, Seattle, LA. New Mexico, Mexico City, Belize, Guyana, Chile, Easter Island, Korea, Germany, England, Ireland, Budapest, Austria and more. Those were just for work purposes nevermind his recreational travelling. This is a reason why I would like a job like Todd has, he gets to travel a lot. I love to travel so this could be a reason to take a similar path career-wise.

Have you met any famous people through work? Who?

He has met Drake, the Weeknd, Lil Wayne, Tyga, Nickelback, Barenaked Ladies, Mariana’s Trench, Hedley, Dominic Purcel, Wentworth Miller, Caty Lotz, Charlie Duce, Michael Collins, Fabian Cousteau, Frank Culbertson, Lucy Widdel, Mincun Bound, Ray Leotta, Big Show, Dean Ambrose, and many more really neat people.

What are some projects you have worked on or are working on at the moment?

His biggest project is DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, but he also does music videos, karaoke videos, short films, commercials and more. To be specific, he also filmed Painkiller Jane, the Weeknd’s music videos (for Wicked Games, High for this, Rolling Stonw and The Zone), Edge of Revolution – Nickelback, Barenaked in America (documentary), and a commercial for Bausele (Australian watch brand).

Here is a picture from when I went on his set for DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. This picture is about 2 years old as I met him once ever before this project.

Here are some pictures of his art. When he is not working, he paints.

“Who is that?”

Disclaimer: I wanted to change the prompt a little bit for it to be a general third-person view rather than someone who intimidates me.

“Who is that?”

“Who is that?” I know her. Doesn’t everyone know her? People know her, but they don’t know her if that makes sense. She has a loud personality, but even one word can silence her. Some days she can do anything though some days her whole mood would change if she didn’t like the way her hair was acting. She tries her best, but can one be truly good at everything? Anyways, she is different. She knows it too. Though who can truly not be different? Who defines what is normal? It still hurts sometimes, but she’s strong. Her personality changes like the weather. Speaking of which, she loves sunny days. She loves the warm feeling of sunlight touching her skin. Image result for sunny weather\She dislikes the winter. The cold gives her a feeling of loneliness. I think it’s weird because most other people love the winter because of the snow, though she walks in the cold wishing she was somewhere warmer. Though, different opinions are what make people different and make the world more interesting. She is truly accepting and believes that diversity is the key to society. She is quite bright and has loads of potential in which she has yet to discover. As I said, she is quite bright, well, she is more book smart. If she puts in enough effort, she can get amazing grades. School is something she excels at. Though, she isn’t exactly the smartest in certain situations outside of school. She makes decisions that nobody would expect. Nothing bad, of course, maybe just a bit different. For example, I’ve seen her with the friends playing ping-pong on the floor and bouncing off the walls. She knows how to have a good time, but at the same time, she can be quite antisocial. Perhaps that is the wrong word, maybe just awkward. There are days where she could party all night if she could, but on the other hand, there are many nights where she would strongly prefer isolation in her own space. Image result for lonelinessLoneliness can be a blessing or a curse in certain situations. She has contradictory feelings about it, as she does most things. Now, on to physical descriptions. If she loves anything, it is making bold changes to herself. One of these things is dyeing her hair, she thinks of it as a form of self-expression. She’s dyed her hair multiple times with colours such as blue, red, purple and pink. She has hazel eyes which is one of the few things she really likes about herself. Another thing she really likes is to wear comfortable clothing, specifically hoodies. Hoodies are warm and give her a sense of protection which makes her feel a lot better in any situation and that means a lot to her. On the topic of things that mean a lot to her, she also must finish her English assignment that is due tomorrow so I’m afraid I’m going to have to wrap this up. Also, by the way, I am her, she is me, and I am Kenya.

Power Solution Fluencies

Power Solution Fluency

Kenya and Kiera

Define: We were asked to come up with and solve a problem regarding technology and power.

Discover:

Problem: How can we improve technology so that it is more environmentally friendly?

Guiding Questions:

  1. How does technology negatively impact our environment?

Technology negatively affects our environment by causing heat, water, air, or even noise pollution when it is being used or created. Many resources, such as metals, are also being spent in creating technology and the toxic materials that are used in technology can cause cancer. Being addicted to technology could also result in additional health problems. Also, when old and used electronics such as phones and laptops break and are thrown out, they are usually not disposed of properly and the toxic materials in them make them a hazard to the environment

2. How have people tried to solve these problems in the past?

A common problem with technology is the waste that it produces. When electronics get old or people replace them, people tend to just throw technology away which is a problem because it cannot be recycled, and it does not dissolve or compost easily. A solution to this is to sell old devices. This can benefit you because you may be able to profit from selling this item. This benefits others because some people may be in need of a new device and if a shiny new phone is not that important, you can just sell yours to them and that will reduce the amount of new technology needing to be made and the amount of technological waste. Another solution to this is that you can try to maintain it and use it for other purposes. If you can maintain your electronics for as long as possible then it can reduce current waste. If you must get rid of it, research how to dispose of it properly. There are many ways to recycle your electronics. This can allow the expensive parts inside of it to be reused and that saves time and money and now people won’t have a need to make more because they can simply reuse it. Another problem that these solve is that it costs lots of money to make these electronics and it takes lots of precious metals and some toxic materials.

3. How do problems in the past compare to current issues with technology?

Now there are less jobs available because certain roles have been replaced by machines and AIs. Another problem that has escalated a lot during the past few years is technology addiction. This has caused issues with learning abilities, reducing attention span, and has become a very common distraction. There is also the problem with cyberbullying and social media. In the past, bullying was not as common because once you were at home, people couldn’t really contact you and bully you. Now, people can message you and contact you at any time and it has led to multiple problems such as mental health issues and in extreme cases, death.

Dream:

-A current solution is scheduled screen time. Some parents use this with their children so they can control how much time a child spends on their device and can still have time to be social and get exercise.

-If possible, it would be more environmentally friendly to walk or take public transit rather than driving because driving costs a lot of money and car gasses cause air pollution. Walking more often can also lead to a more active lifestyle and counts as a source of exercise

-Instead of throwing away your device, donate it or sell it online so that it can be reused. If it must be disposed, do so properly by bringing it to a recycling center nearby.

-Leave your phone in a big or in a locker at school/work to reduce distractions and encourage real social interactions with other people. This also can help because your device radiates toxic energy and having it away sometimes can be healthy for you and reduce the risk of cancer, etc.

Deliver: Our biggest solution to make our use of technology more environmentally friendly is to reduce, reuse and recycle. First off, if we reduce our use of technology then us as humans can be healthier and more social. If we reuse technology rather than just throwing it away, it can reduce the amount of factory use to make more technology. Reusing technology and reusing the expensive parts inside of it can be great for saving money. Consumers will be spending less money on technology and factories will be spending less money on making new devices and parts. ‘

Debrief: First off, to solve our problem, we had to come up with a question involving electricity. Then, after coming up with our question, we asked ourselves some questions such as how technology affected our environment negatively, how have people tried to solve these problems in the past, and how do these problems in the past compare to current issues? After researching questions, we began brainstorming solutions for the problem and presented our final solution. Some things we did well is that we came up with sub questions to guide our research and we were able to brainstorm solutions without assistance. However, some things we could improve on is we could’ve probably gotten a lot more research in if we had more class time and we could have been able to look at more aspects of technology. We just wish we had another block of class time.
