Advertising Target Markets

In this gum commercial, “Extra – Father & Daughter,” it is apparent that advertisers used various techniques to grab the attention of their audience. One may notice that this advertisement exudes emotion which leads to the most obvious technique, emotional appeal. Emotional appeal is a method where the advertiser caters to people’s emotions, like fear, joy, or nostalgia. I believe this strikes all three. People may fear for their children going to college, may be filled with joy because of the bond between the child and the father, or may be nostalgic to this part of their own lives, from either the child’s perspective or the father’s. There was another trick that shows in this commercial; transference is where attempts are made to incorporate positive words, images, or ideas into a commercial. This is shown with the choice of music, the imagery, and the story that the advertisers have created; it gathers many emotions such as sadness, awe, happiness, and heartfelt. Other methods are evident as well, such as plain folk and repitition. Plain folk is the idea that anybody could be represented in this commercial, or the audiences thought that, “that could be me.” This approach uses ordinary people, as opposed to celebrities, in order to convince somebody to purchase the product. Lastly, at the end of the commercial, there is a phrase, “give extra, get extra.” This is called repititon; a expression used frequently throughout the company. A perfect example of this is a catchline, which is previous phrase is. These type of techniques are used to grab their audience’s attention, though it would be smarter to catch the attention of a specific audience, also known as a target audience. A target audience is a specific group of people in which would be more inclined to purchase. One may believe that the target audience for this product is adults because teenagers could just find this cringey or uninteresting. Adults also have probably witnessed a similar experience with their own children and may find it very emotional, or like I mentioned before, nostalgic. For these reasons, I believe this advertisement was meant for adults, though of course it could be for all ages. Nontheless, this commercial did an excellent job striking emotion in most people and most likely made lots of profit from it as well.

Short Story to Internet Based Article – “There Will Come Soft Rains”

Last Standing House Burnt to Ash

Kenya Anand

On August 4, 2026, a supposed “animal-run” house in Allendale, California burnt down due to a stove drowned in cleaning solvent. The house could not be saved, as the “owners” tried to do so.

There have been many theories on this house that remain unsolvable. There are no current humans living in the house, but there had been many reports on people who had seen how spotless and dust-free the house had been; even years after the disappearance of the humans who had lived there.

Allendale and specifically the neighborhood where the house is located is known to be a ghost town, where the only people are reporters and journalists who fly in by helicopter occasionally. They have no other mode of transportation considering there had been no airports and the roads were damaged beyond repair. Below are many of the theories that have been rebirthed after the house had burnt down.

The Last Voice

A handful of journalists were in the area of Allendale on the morning of August 5, 2026. They were only able to see one wall left standing. The rest was an enormous pile of ash, wood, and metal.

While the journalists stood in shock, they heard a small voice from the mess. It supposedly repeated, “Today is August 5, 2026, today is August 5, 2026, today is…”

Animal Theory

Many journalists from outside of the city had tried to get more information on the mysterious house. Some claimed to see animals of an unnatural colour cleaning the house. One reporter stated that there were small versions of, “yellow giraffes, blue lions, pink antelopes, lilac panthers.” Apparently, there were also mice who cleaned the house at multiple times during the day. This theory sounds ridiculous, though there is some evidence.

Animal Theory Evidence

The video below shows video evidence of small mice cleaning this house.

Vocalized Clock Theory

Travellers who went to Allendale, the fallen-apart ghost town, made claims that they heard voices coming from the house, disregarding the fact that no humans had been in that house for many years. People believe it may be a vocalized clock.

Some things that people claimed to hear include:

  • The time of day
  • Announcements to who lived there in the past; one reporter claimed to hear that, “today is Mr. Featherstone’s birthday.”
  • Poetry and rhymes
  • Orders and tasks

Mr. Featherstone was not a name found in any phone book or government documents, which further prompts this theory. Many wonder who Mr. Featherstone is, or if he used a different name to address himself as within the household.

Another name that the voice mentioned was Mrs. McClellan. She was found within government documents though it seems that she has no family. She also had no trace of when she disappeared and what had happened to her.

Any evidence of her existence from inside the house such as pictures, writing, and any of her belongings are all burnt to shreds other than a torn apart picture of a possible family. The only clear image in the photo was a red ball and a pair of hands below it that cut off at the wrist.

Vocalized Clock Theory Evidence

Below, there is a voice recording a journalist captured by listening just outside the walls of the house.

Analysis of Internet Based Article Above

The original short story, “There Will Come Soft Rains,” was a narrative piece of writing created by Ray Bradbury. I managed to turn this into expository, descriptive, and persuasive writing. I made it expository by turning it into an event and explaining what had happened and incorported facts like the date and location. I made it descriptive by adding loads of details on the event and extra details in conspiracy theories. I described what had happened and what was seen while using descriptive language. Lastly, I made it persuasive by incorporating the conspiracy theories and chunks of my own opinion as well. For example, I said that the animal theory sounded ridiculous. With all of these writing styles, I created an internet-based article. I did this by taking the tragedy from the story and turning it into an article heading. I also took other details from previous parts of the story and converting them into conspiracy theories in order to add more details to my article. Each of these articles had their own subheading to grab the reader’s attention. I also created some of my own ideas which did not interrupt the actual plot. An example of this is adding the idea of journalists and reporters who travel to this neighborhood for more information that theorists would enjoy. There were also many way that I effectively transformed a short story into a realistic internet-based article. I used the specific key parts of an internet-based article to help better present my information such as subheadings, a bullet-point list, and incorporating multimedia. The multimedia may be what I am most proud of because about half of the multimedia is original such as my own drawings and a voice recording that I created to replicate the voice of the voice-clock in the short story. While doing all of this, I learned how to be most effective while writing in this style. I also learned about the components of an internet-based article and what makes it different from other writing types. Overall, I believe I was able to successfully transition “There Will Come Soft Rains” into an internet based article.

Practice Film Review – “Short Fuse”

Is This Our Future?

Kenya Anand

This animated short film, “Short Fuse,” animated by The Short Fuse Team, gives an interesting perspective on the future of the world. Within the 7 minute and 9 second run-time, it tells a creative, futuristic story.

“Short Fuse” is a short film about a “scavenger” who had stayed on Earth after occaisonal toxic storms appeared. Most people chose to escape from Earth, leaving many scraps behind, which those who stayed used to survive.

A boy named Bob goes through the scraps and find something that he hadn’t seen before. It was called a “cleanbot” and it was left behind on Earth; though when Bob takes it home, he finds it to be quite a nuisance.

The animations were beautiful, especially considered the film, “Short Fuse”, had been created by students. The ending, however, was somewhat forseeable; it was a bit cliché. The storyline wasn’t anything super special, and seemed to be a tiny bit dragged on.

Nontheless, the director, Rafanan Michael Robert Uy, did an outstanding job with the film.

Time Safari Inc. Shut Down After a Huge Mistake!

Kenya Anand

Time Safari Inc. was a time-travelling hunting company. It shut down after supposed events that were changed due to a hunter’s mistake.

This company took a group of eager hunters back over 60 million years to hunt the most dangerous game, a Tyrannosaurus Rex. According to the guidelines of this company, it is absolutely mandatory to stick to a metal path which lay above the ground in order to keep the world safe.

One of these hunters, who was named Eckles, broke this simple rule out of fear. Eckels was quite an honorable hunter. He had practically hunted some of the biggest game of the present but still, he wasn’t satisfied. This brought him to Time Safari Inc.

As he may be known as one of the greatest hunters of all time, Eckles’ skills were no match for this ginormous beast. Out of fear, he ran off the path. Safari guide, Lesperance, claims that “all he did was kick up some dirt.” Though, what really happened was so much more.

What was effected?

  • Language and development
  • How humans perceive colour
  • The results of the United States Election

Yes, that’s right, according to the travellers, Keith had won the election before they went on their travels.

How did this happen?

It all happened because of a theory called the Butterfly Effect. This is the idea that everything a person does could lead to a huge change in society later. Below is a video that better explains the event and how it works.

What’s happening now?

The company is currently facing lots of legal action with the government. It has already been shut down but the owners and employees are looking at a possible life-sentence for what they’ve done.

Eckels had been killed by Safari Leader Travis, and for this he already has 40 years in jail.

What could this mean for the rest of us?

This sparks interesting discussion amongst many. The idea that one simple action can change the course of existence is beyond extraoridinary. The options are endless. Though, it’s not so cool that one man made a foolish mistake that changed everything, atleast in his eyes and those of the other hunters.
