Math 10 Honors Numbers Summary

Upon review of the first unit, I’ve made great improvements on things that I already knew and learned a lot of new things along the way. I learned all the different parts of a radical, like the radican and the index. I learned how to convert a repeating decimal into a fraction in simplest form.

Ex. let x=2.051515151…

In this case, the repeating digits are 51

You must move the 51 to the left of the decimal point, so you multiply both sides

10^3 = 1000

1000x = 2051.5151…

Then move the 51 to the immediate right of the decimal point, to isolate your repeating decimal

10x= 20.51515151…

Then subtract the second number from the first number

And finally isolate your variable and reduce.

I have improved my understanding of decimals in a radical gravely. I now know how to estimate to one significant digit by grouping the decimals into groups of two. I have also enlarged my comprehension of the real number system, creating a poster where I had to imagine how the system would look in a real life situation, really helped me grasp the subject. We were also introduced to the ideas of cube roots and roots of 4 and 5.  It’s as simple as taking what would be the index of two in a square root, and changing it into a cubed root etc. Changing radicals from being entire to mixed and vise versa was hard for me at first, but once I understood, almost all of the questions followed the same rule. I would have to go back and give myself a refresher course for any tests in the future.

Overall, I really enjoyed and understood this unit. I will definitely be returning to the post to remind myself on these important topics.
