Science app review

My problem was that I wanted to learn about Physics in a way that is easy and understandable for someone like me who has absolutely no idea about Physics.

My hope was that it could teach me about Physics in a very straight forward manner with lots of pictures and diagrams, with many different ways to take in the information.

My solution was to look for an app that was meant for beginners like me. I began by searching up “Physics for beginners”. Several apps came up and I chose the first one that came up.

The app I decided to review is called “QVprep Lite Science Physics for the 9th and 10th grade”.

Upon first view, the app looks more like an app that will test you on skills that you have already learned rather than teaching you them. They have a similar app for all the different grade levels and there is a free version and a full, paid for version.  There are 13 subjects within the Physics app for grades 9 and 10.

The first subject I picked was the Heat subject. Inside the folder was two smaller folders, one called learn and one called Test. One thing at this point I really like about the app is how there are no pop-ups and it runs very quickly. At the very bottom of every page, there is the option to share it on Facebook or Twitter, which I really like because that way you can spread your knowledge with others on a platform that is easily accessible.

I then tapped on the Learn category to open up a page with a choice of watching a video or reading through the notes in a category called Concepts. I looked through the both of them, and as expected, the concepts made absolutely no sense. But the biggest disappointment was that the video was the exact same thing as the notes, just in a slideshow. By doing that, you limit the ways that kids can understand the subject. I was super excited about the 2 different ways you could learn it because not everyone learns or understands things the same way, so when I found out what was really going on, I wasn’t impressed anymore.

I continued to look through the app and continued to find the same things over and over again. i found that there was nothing really all that special about the app other than how much information it had.

DEBRIEF:

What went well: The app held a lot of information, was easy to use, ran very quickly and had little to no ads.

What could have been better: The app could have not led us to believe that there were different ways of learning the material and it could have been a little more descriptive considering it was meant for beginners.

If I were to rate this app, I would give it 3.5/5. I liked the amount of information it had but I did not like it because it simply does not lay out the content in a way that is easy for me to learn.

QUESTIONS:
How does the app help users build skills or learn content?
I believe that it may help some people to learn the content provided but it will not be super helpful for an entire class. If I were forced to use it, I would use it as a review rather than a way to teach people. For some people who would rather learn by reading very straight forward notes and at their own pace, then this app could be extremely helpful and useful to them.
How intuitive is the app? Is it self-explanatory or does it take a long time to figure out?
The app does not take any time to figure out. It is extremely self-explanatory and very straight forward from the moment you open it up. However the app is not very intuitive. I have used many apps that have very similar formatting, such as verb conjugation apps and English grammar apps.
What innovative elements does the app utilize?
The app is not very innovative. It uses fairly old technology and does not make use of all the different ways to use technology in the modern world. We have access to so many different apps and websites that contain the exact same information and I had to choose one of them, I would not be going back to this one.
MY FINAL THOUGHTS:
Overall, the app contains lots of information and a very easy format that anyone could figure out. For some people, this will be the Physics app of their dreams (if that’s possible). However for people like myself, this app won’t be extremely helpful unless we are using it as a review. I did not like that the app essentially lied by showing us that there were two different ways of learning the content when there was only one because the same notes were put into a slideshow.

  1. Thank you for sharing the steps of solution fluency. Keep in mind, you are not debriefing the app, but debriefing the process you went through. You have done a great review, however, and given an excellent picture of the app. I love the fact that you have responded to your comments. Great work!
