Theseus and Hippolyta are two members of royalty preparing for their wedding. A man named Egeus enters with his daughter, Hermia, and two men, Lysander and Demetrius. Egeus wants Hermia to marry Demetrius, but she has no interest in such a marriage, preferring Lysander. Theseus decides to support Egeus’ choice for Hermia to marry Demetrius. Believe it or not, Hermia doesn’t take the news very well, so she and Lysander decide to leave Athens and elope. Hermia tells Helena, a friend, about their plans, who spills the beans to Demetrius because she likes him and hopes to gain favour with him. Lysander and Hermia leave into the forest, followed by Demetrius, who is trailed by Helena. Meanwhile, in the same forest, is a troupe of craftsmen who are practicing for a play that they will be performing at Theseus’ wedding. Among them is a man named Nick Bottom, a very conceited fellow. Also in the forest, Oberon and Titania, the king and queen of the fairies, are having a spat over a child they found. Titania currently has custody of the child, so Oberon throws a bit of a fit and decides to get revenge on his wife. He sends his servant, Puck, to get his hands on the juice from a magical flower that makes people fall in love with the first person they see. Puck gets the juice and returns to Oberon, who tells him to apply it to Titania. He adds that Puck should apply it to Demetrius too, because Oberon had noticed him mistreating Helena despite her affection. Puck applies the juice to Titania and takes the creative liberty of changing the head of Nick Bottom, who was nearby, into that of a donkey’s, knowing that Titania would see him upon waking up and fall in love with him. While trying to find Demetrius, Puck finds Lysander, and thinking that he was the one he was supposed to target with the juice, applies it to him. What ensues is a big mixup that ends up with the two young men being enamored with Helena, who is confused and thinks they are mocking her, and makes Hermia jealous of her. At this point, Titania has also awoken to Bottom with his donkey head, and is treating him to every luxury, which he, in his vanity, doesn’t think is odd at all. Oberon ends up getting what he wants with the child, and tells Puck to fix everything, which he does. Titania’s love is reverted, Bottom loses the donkey head, Lysander and Hermia are now together, and Demetrius now reciprocates Helena’s love. The lovers are found by Egeus and Hippolyta, and they are all married to their suitable partners. After the wedding, Bottom and his crew perform their play-within-a-play, which goes down famously with the crowd, and the play concludes with Puck imploring that the crowd remember the events of the play as nothing more than a dream.
