Questions:
KC: Why are you so passionate about your job?
MB: When I was younger, I never really had anyone to rely on and talk to about my problems at school. So being able to help you guys and give you advice that maybe I needed when I was younger, makes me really glad that you guys have a way better support system then I did.
KC: What obstacles did you face to get where you are today?
MB: To get where I am today took a lot of time and effort. I had to go through school but most importantly, I had to keep working hard and have a positive mindset on what I was doing.
KC: What made you interested in your career?
MB: I always knew that I wanted a job where I would be able to help students. Wether it would be a teacher or a youth worker. I really wanted to help kids and make them feel supported in the community. I want them to know that they always have someone to talk to and rely on with their problems.
KC: What advice would you pass on to someone who is inserted in what you are doing?
MB: I think that the biggest thing that people have to know about this job, is that you have to have an open mind and you cannot be offended. Students will come to you with their problems and you may feel that they are angry at you but its something that they are dealing with. You just have to be helpful towards them.
KC: If you could change anything about your job, what would it be?
MB: If I could change anything about my job, I would 100% ask for a bigger office. I have so many students coming in at lunch and after school, theres absolutely no room to move around.
KC: What’s your favourite part about your job?
MB: My favourite part about this job Is helping students. Helping them with their probelms, giving advice that they need, or even simply talking to them. Im glad they have a good support system. Not even just me, there are other people in the school they could talk to, and it makes me very happy.
Who did you Interview?
For my community connections post, I interviewed the youth worker at Riverside Secondary, Monica Brochu. She came to Riverside Secondary this year after working at Citadel Middle school for three years. This is her first experience as a youth worker in a high school setting. Not only is she the Youth Worker at Riverside, but she also runs clubs such as the Care and Compassion club. She does a lot for the school wether its helping students with their problems or supplying them with breakfast in the morning.
Why did you choose to interview this individual?
I chose to Interview Monica Brochu because I think that what she does for the students and the school in general is really incredible. She puts so much time and effort into helping the community and I think that I am passionate about doing that as well. She is a very good support system and I suggest that if you are having problems or you just need someone to talk to, you should go to her. You can book an appointment or even just pop into her office in the morning, lunch, after school, or even between classes.
What did you learn from this individual when interviewing them?
During the interview I learned a lot. I learned the reason why she wanted to join this career, I learned her previous struggles, and I learned about the advice she gave to me for those who want to join the same career as her. After the interview, I got really inspired to help other as well.
If you want to contact her or book an appointment, this is her email. She would be glad to talk 🙂 mbrochu@sd43.bc.ca
You can also pop by her office by the wave.
