Protein Synthesis Paper Model – A&P 12

1. Describe the process of transcription: unwinding, complementary base pairing, separating

Unwinding: This is the first step in transcription, where the DNA helicase unwinds and unzips, exposing a gene and the DNA is now separated into 2 strands.

Complementary base pairing: Complementary RNA bonds connect with RNA polymerase to a strand of DNA by hydrogen bonding.

Separating: The mRNA leaves the nucleus and enters the cytoplasm. Then, the RNA strands separate and DNA forms again into a double helix.

The yellow paper is the RNA polymerase which connects the RNA bases to the DNA

2. How did today’s activity do a good job of modelling the process of transcription? In what ways was our model inaccurate?

This model accurately visualizes how the RNA polymerase and mRNA work together for complementary base pairing to occur. We were also able to show that the RNA strand separates from the DNA in final stage. However, it was inaccurate when the DNA did unwind as the shape should be a double helix and ours was simply portrayed as two straight lines which could seem misleading/inaccurate.

3. Describe the process of translation: initiation, elongation, and termination.
During translation, mRNA carries the message to a ribosome, the ribosome reads the mRNA strand and links the amino acids together as instructed.

Initiation: The mRNA is held by the ribosome. tRNA binds to the start codon of mRNA. The tRNA has a binding site of 3 bases called an anticodon that is complementary to the mRNA codon. Therefore, the codon of mRNA of AU is read by a tRNA that has a UAC anticodon. The tRNA that has this anticodon carries the amino acid on its tail.

Elongation: the ribosome moves along the mRNA strand. It reads a codon and creates a tRNA anticodon at the same time. The amino acids chain together and grow.

Termination: The process above repeats until a special codon, called a stop codon, is reached. The three stop codons are UAA, UAG, and UGA. The stop codons do not code for amino acids but instead act as signals to stop translation. There is no tRNA anticodon for the stop codon so the ribosome lets go of the mRNA strand and the tRNA lets go of the polypeptide chain. They all come apart from each other.

4. How did today’s activity do a good job of modelling the process of translation? In what ways was our model inaccurate?

The activity displayed protein synthesis in a helpful visual way that helped me understand the process in a more detailed manner. Not only because it was visually presented and displayed on the desk in front of us, but also as we personally had to move through the steps and use our own heads throughout the process and activity. I am aware that the process of translation is more detailed than what we have here, so therefore the model is not completely accurate but nevertheless, all the basic stages were well-shown. We were able to show that amino acids get chained together and that the ribosome do two tasks at once. But this model is inaccurate because it does not show the exact process of initiation.

8 Essentials to Bring on a Backpacking Adventure

Whether you are camping or hiking, traveling to Europe or Asia as a baller or on a budget, it doesn’t matter. You need to travel as light as possible. This is why I’ll  only be talking about the backpacking necessities.

  1. This is one seems quite obvious but it would be bizarre not to mention. You need to bring a backpack! You can’t be aPromover 48L Hiking Backpack Travel Daypack Camping Backpacking Backpacks Trekking Bag Large for Climbing Camping Mountaineering Traveling Cycling – USATravel247 backpacker without a backpack! Not just any backpack, but one that fits not only your items you are brining but also your type of adventure plans! Therefore I suggest you first gather all the belongings you are planning to bring, then find a bag that can both fit all your possessions but is also comfortable to wear. Make sure it has usable pockets and lots of room! Picking the right travel backpack is very important; you are, after all, going to be pretty much living out of your pack.
  2. Travel Toiletry Bag - Toiletry Bag - Dopp Kit - Mens Black Toiletry Bag - Mens Travel Toiletries Bag - TrousseMake sure you find a small compact toiletry bag to fit all your hygiene essentials! Toothbrush and toothpaste, shower gel, cotton buds, pack of tissues, deodorant, razor with replacement blades, shaving gel etc. Trust me from personal experience, it could be a large pain in the butt if you forget even just one of these necessities. The last thing you want it running around a foreign city just to find some toothpaste. I suggest making a thoughtful list and checking off everything you have. If you don’t have certain items, add them to your shopping list!
  3. Sunscreen is a must have! Especially if going to places like Asia, Africa, or South Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Sunscreen - SPF 50 - 88ml | London DrugsAmerica as sunscreen is often very expensive there where locals purposely put up the prices of the product to make money off in need tourists. I suggest getting a sunscreen that is waterproof as you are likely to sweat when walking around with a backpack daily. If going as a group, id also suggest just brining out bottle of sunscreen as you could all share and it will take up less room. You don’t want to burn in the tropical sun!
  4. This necessity is often overlooked but is a must have item to bring. Some sort of medical kit or even just a few medical supplies are key. Disinfectant spray, bug spray, bandages Minimalist Kit | Chinook Medical Gearand bandages, gauze ect. These are all items that you will regret not bringing if worst comes to worst. From my own experience when backpacking, Ive used these items at least once every trip just even on myself. You will not regret it. Don’t take any chances or risks when it comes to personal safety and health.
  5. When you travel the world you are going to have a ton of spare time. Waiting for planes, waiting for buses, waiting for trains – lots of waiting! And that time waiting can be spent Amazon Official Site: Kindle Paperwhitewisely reading life-changing literature. I suggest bringing a Kindle! Yes, paper books are more enjoyable to read in most cases but you don’t want to be bringing multiple books that could get ruined in your traveling process. A kindle is nice and thin so you could easily slide it into a compartment of your bad and you could download hundreds of different books. Paper books also weight a lot, are awkwardly shaped and aren’t ideal to haul across the world in a backpack. Get that Kindle! (They also have WiFi 😉 )
  6. Clothes are an important part to think about when packing for your adventures. Hot or cold weather, pack clothes that fold up small and don’t weigh too much – avoid denim jeans! Even if you are heading to freezing weather, it’s better to bring clothes The Essential Backpacking Checklist for Every Adventurerthat you can layer rather than a big heavy jacket. Cotton is light and breathes. Splurge on the more sweat resistant stuff if you can. Darker clothes hide annoying stains and can be worn for longer. This is extra important because you can expect your backpacking clothes to be on a quicker rotation than your normal wardrobe. Always remember, clothes are pretty cheap in most parts of the world, so rather than overpack, bring slightly less than what you need and pick up anything else you might need on the road.
  7. For most people, shoes are the hardest item to pack. They take up a lot of space, and shoes are too specialized to bring just one pair, even for short trips. But I highly recommend wearing one pair of shoes and, if necessary, packing another pair. Bringing more than two pairs of shoes makes traveling carry-on-only difficult and stressful. Removing shoes Best Hiking Shoes of 2020 | Switchback Travelfrom your luggage is also an easy way to free up space for clothes. Your second pair of shoes should be packable. They should be light and flat to minimize the amount of space they take up in your luggage. I suggest packing your shoes first, then packing the rest of the items around them!
  8. 90w Universal Ac Laptop Charger Power Adapter for Hp Compaq Dell Acer Asus Toshiba IBM Lenovo Samsung Sony Fujitsu Gateway Notebook Ultrabook: Amazon.ca: ElectronicsLast but definitely not least you need to bring cords, chargers and ideally a universal charging port. Rather than bringing a charging brick for every individual device, consider investing in a portable single-adapter that has both three-pronged outlets and USB ports. These not only save you space, they come in handy when your hotel room abroad is low on outlets!

With the help of these packing essentials, you’ll be able to figure out exactly what to pack for your trip so you can adventure around the world knowing you’ve got everything you need for your trip!

6 Weirdest Foods Ive Eaten While Traveling

Being a 17 year old white girl from Canada, I think I’ve eaten some strange foods compared to the people in my demofraphic and I wanted to share some with you guys today! Ive narrowed down to the top six strangest foods I’ve eaten while traveling the world:

  1. Fried Bugs in Laos

12 Dishes That Prove Lao Cuisine Could Be The Next Food CrazeBeetles, caterpillars, crickets, and more! The Western world may continue to shy away from it, but insects, otherwise known as creepy crawlies, are consumed by over 2 billion people in over 80 countries around the world. Insects are also PACKED with protein and are seen as a serious solution for world hunger and to feed a growing population without further harming the environment through inefficient food production. My family and I were walking around a night market, one humid afternoon and sat down at some plastic chairs and table to enjoy some live music. We noticed a food stand selling fried bugs and got ourselves a plate to try! Surprisingly delicious! They were cooked in a large circular stone pan along with a variety of spices. Could easily be compared to chips. Highly recommend.

2.  Snails in China

Virtually fat-free, carbohydrate-free and sugar-free, escargot are an excellent Top 10 Mid-Autumn Festival foods in China - China.org.cnsource of lean protein. They’re rich in iron, magnesium, selenium, phosphorus and potassium. Like other mollusks, snails are a good source of tryptophan, an amino acid that helps the brain produce serotonin. After a long tour around the city of Shanghai, our tour lady introduced us to a restaurant that featured snails on the menu. She told us about the famous delicacy highly enjoyed in the country and we had to try it! They were quite good, although the thought of eating a snail isn’t too appealing to me. Safe to say, Im glad and proud of myself for trying it, but that was probably the last time I enjoyed this particular snack.

3.  Tarantula in Cambodia

7 weird foods you only eat on your gap year, from guinea pigs to spiders | The Independent | The IndependentFried spider is a regional snack in Cambodia. … It is not clear how this practice started, but some have suggested that the population might have started eating spiders out of desperation during the years of Khmer Rouge rule, when food was in short supply. These arachnids are such a delicacy that large ones can sell for up to $1 each, a hefty sum in a country where minimum wage is about $6 a day. Eating a fried tarantula has become a popular photo opportunity for tourists in Cambodia. Walking at night through a night market in Cambodia, you see a lot of interesting delicacies. My family and I knew that we had to step out of our comfort zones and get something exotic. This might come as a shock, but getting a fried tarantula on a stick was less frightening than some of the other options presented to us that night. Overall, the tarantula was crispy and tasted like a chip. Similar to the fried bugs in Laos.

4.   Frog Legs in Vietnam

Frog is a “less scary” food compared to many others that will follow on the list and it is not only just a beer snack but Fried Frog Legs with Ginger and ScallionsVietnamese also have it as a meal. After skinning and gutting, the frog is then fried, steamed, or grilled and then served on the dining table. You can enjoy it with rice or just have BBQ frog with lemon, salt, and pepper. Other than boiled or grilled frog, you can choose to eat frog curry, frog porridge, or sautéed frog with lemongrass and chili. Even though it doesn’t look good, the flavor is delicious. Frog meat tastes like chicken and contains a lot of essential vitamins and vital minerals so it is seen as a healthy food. The biggest advantage of eating frog is that it helps malnourished children gain weight. Along with enjoying this amazing meal by the water late at night in Vietnam, we were featured on a local television show!

5.  Durian In Thailand

Discovering What Makes Durian Stink – “King of Fruits” Is Known for Its Pungent OdorGrown in many countries across tropical South East Asia, the spiky, stinky durian is an acquired taste. Eating durian is banned in many outdoor spaces and carrying it is prohibited on public transport because of its smell. If you’ve smelled a durian even once, you probably remember it. Despite the potent stench, Durian is a very nutritious fruit that’s rich in fiber, B vitamins, vitamin C, and various healthy plant compounds. My sister being the most daring one in the family when it comes to food, suggested we try the notorious durian fruit that the locals have been telling us about. We’ve smelt it before, as it is cut up among many food markets, but when we actually tried it, we got it pre-packaged in plastic. Oddly enough, the taste is nothing like the smell. The texture, is what is actually interesting about it, when eating it as it feels like rubber.

6.   Alligator in ThailandEating Crocodile Meat in Thailand - Yum or Yuck?

Crocodile meat is considered a healthy and nutritious alternative to pork or chicken, as it contains less fat, lower cholesterol levels and a higher proportion of protein than the aforementioned animals. It is purported to provide health benefits for the heart, improve blood circulation and alleviate respiratory illnesses, as well as several other diseases. Many English speaking locals suggested us a restaurant that is famous for their alligator dish. As soon as we arrived at the restaurant, we didn’t even look at the menu and asked for them to bring us the alligator. We didn’t even know what it looked like or what to expect. To our surprise, the alligator was served as completely white meat on top of lettuce. The meat itself was good but intensely dry. Reminded myself of white fish such as cod or halibut.

Despite the taste or overall affect I got from these exotic cuisines, good or bad,  I can proudly say I have stepped out of my comfort bubble to just try them. I hope this blog inspired some of you guys to step out of your comfort zones at least once in a while. Trust me, you won’t regret it!

Getting to Know Me – Katya Chernous

She burrows her sun kissed toes into the meadow of gold and lifts the corners of her grin in glee. The perpetual skies of summer are buckled with delicate clouds as they flare up in a luminous, neon-blue when the water takes them. Looking back at the boat it bobs in the incoming tide, like a toy in a bath. Her nose burns in the scolding air, and she squints against the sun reflecting on the blue sheet of glitter-dipped glass delicately spread across her vision. The sweet scent of sunscreen and coconut envelopes her, and the oils on the coat of her skin flicker beneath the orb of fire in the heavens. The salty sting enduring in her misty braids that sporadically caress her tongue, sooth her. She is lost for words. The once sapphire and bountiful canopy, transfigures into a beautiful Phoenix that spreads his wings around the globe. This apocalyptic aura sends parcels of serotonin into the air and the slight chill hugs her with warmth. The white curtains swaying by her window, flutter in sync with the palm trees twinkling on the dance floor, while the rose and lavender lights gleam upon them. The distant waves slicing the shore play an elegant orchestra that tickle her ear drums. The feather touch of the vigorous gale cuddles her senses and hypnotizes her eyes to shut. She can sense the distant golden coin slipping away from her embrace, into the dark pocket of the twilight.

Chemistry 11 Online Work Self Assessment

The transition from working in a classroom enviornment to an at home online learning environment has gone pretty smoothly for me. I feel as though I worked more effeicnelty at home and on my own than in school as there are no distractions for me when at home. The part that I found the most beneficial for me personally, was the fact that I could go back and watch the lesson video when I am studying for the tests. I am able to pause and take notes and not be rushed when processing information. I could take breaks in between and be in a more generally relaxing environment. I also liked having classes only 3 times a week as it gave me time for other classes and time to do my chemistry homework/study. The part that was most difficult for me was probably doing the labs as it is quite diffrent not doing them physically in a classroom. It was diffucult for me to go through the lab steps and follow the instructions as it wasn’t a physical acitivity but more just words and calculations on paper. Something that I would’ve changed was maybe going through the labs deeper and with more explanation. Even more of a general overview of the lab. All in all, the online expririence for me was very beneficial, not just for Chemistry 11 but for most of my other online classes as well.

Poetry Project – Katya Chernous

Hi Everyone,

For this project, the English 11 Honours students were assigned the task of finding a way to uplift our community through poems and poetry. I began brainstorming different ideas and types of poems to uplift the community, knowing from the beginning that I wanted to write something and create something for my neighbours and everyone in the general area of where I live. After figuring out who I want my core audience to be, I had to figure out a clever and creative way to share my work with them. I decided that I wanted to put my poems somewhere on paper where people would be able to clearly see them and stop to read them while walking by. In order to achieve that goal, I made sure to make both of the poems extremely fun and colourful so that the audience would stop to read them and it will catch their attention. Also, since one of the main points of this project is to uplift the community I thought it was a good idea to use happy colours and images (flowers, butterflies etc.) I then had to decide what my poems were going to be about and what would be the core theme between the two of them, as we had to choose a topic. I started brainstorming what something was that the community can all agree on and something that all of us share. This community is a really big family neighbourhood, with a lot of parks and schools so I thought that it would be great to talk about importance of family and close ones within my poems. I think it’s extremely important to value this time for family as a lot of the times, we are living our own lives and don’t tend to spend as much time together as we probably should. I know a lot of kids and parents who have more time now at home and grown a stronger connection with each other because of quarantine. We should be using this bad situation and make the most of it. I wrote the poem “I Will Forever Love You” about the love for my family and the relationship with my family while reflecting how closer I grew to them during quarantine. I wrote about the thought of losing them and the regret that I would then have after thinking about how even during quarantine I chose to stay in my room instead of communicating and doing an activity with them. Quarantine opened my eye to ways of my family and I spending time together and has taught me ways of doing activities together even when quarantine ends and we all go back to our busy and usual lives. Both of my parents currently work from home so I am with them 24/7 and even though my sister moved out, we are on FaceTime together as a family almost all day as well considering she is home as well. I also decided to share the poem “Family” by Ryan Guerrero because when reading it, I really related to it and I thought it would be perfect to share with the community. I tried to pick a poem that was shorter (considering mine was pretty long and I was worried that people walking by wouldn’t want to read two very long poems) and I also tried to pick a poem that was easier to read and understand knowing that a lot of readers would be children. I also thought the poem was great for the situation that we are going through currently and I loved how Guerrero talked about taking that chance we were given with our family and not missing it and later regretting it. His poem really spoke to me so that’s why I decided to share it as well. I next had to find a spot to place the poems. I was thinking trees, walls, and even fences but I couldn’t find any places that I liked. I then came upon the mailbox which I thought was a great idea because everyone walks there and past there. I decided to choose a location a little bit further away from my house (5 minute walk) instead of the mailbox directly in front of my house because I knew that a lot of people walk by there due to the nearby boardwalk, river, bike trail, and stores there. So I took the location of my poems into huge consideration. After writing my poems and designing their looks, I knew that something was missing. The goal of this project was to uplift the community in our current situation and I thought to myself if just these two poems were really going to uplift a person. I came to the thought that no. They will probably forget about it the next day and it will have a slight to no affect on them. I wanted to find a way to make this more interactive. I came up with the idea to leave a personal note, with the reason as to why I made this in the first place and to personally wish them positive energy. I also wanted this project to go both ways and for them to share their thoughts and pieces as well. I did this by leaving a blank space for them to go and write what they wished. Wether it was feedback on the poems, a personl message, or quotes and poems of their own. The way that I tried making the audience agree with me is to make it a very emotional and relatable piece work. I wanted something that the audience would enjoy reading and I thought that it was the best strategy to use for them to agree with me and take action in their personal lives and at their current home situation. Something that I also took into consideration is that this is a very interactive community and neighbourhood. Everyone here knows each other and everyone is extremely friendly to one another. Every week we gather together and spend time as a community. You can really feel that missing here currently due to social distancing and I thought that this was a great way to get everybody together to talk about the importance of being there for one another.

What are some of the things that we can do to help those that have been impacted by a current or previous conflict?

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, millions of people all over the world are feeling the mental and physical drain of self-isolation. Something that the pandemic took away from us is communication with the outside world. I think that talking to others and even strangers is something that we all dearly and truly miss. That’s why I believe that we need to rely on communicating to those in our home while also growing a stronger connection with one another. I think that a way to fill this lonely feeling that a lot of of have been having is through the power of words. Positivity and looking at the brighter side is a great way of changing someones well being. It’s a great thing to show other that everyone is experiencing the same situation right now and letting others know that they are not alone is a great first step. This is why this project was so important to me because I got to help others that are feeling the same loneliness right now as I do. With this project, I got the opportunity to uplift other people and Im glad that I chose to present my poems to the general public as I got to express my thoughts and feelings to a very large group and large variety of people :).

Below are my two poems and the message/blank area I left for the community.

Please keep in mind that this was a very windy day and I could not get the papers to stop moving no matter how much tape I used. I later came out the next day and fixed it so it now looks much cleaner. I also moved the paper on which you can write on, on top so that it is easier for people to write on it without kneeling down. (I also got very lucky that it did not rain and that the weather was beautiful)

Short Story Talks- (Foreshadowing)

What is foreshadowing?

Foreshadowing is an indication of a future event. Foreshadowing occurs in literary text when the author provides information hinted to the readers that a specific situation will occur. It can be applied in writing, in many different ways but is most commonly shown in dialogue or plot changes. Foreshadowing offers suspense to the story to keep readers hooked and curious about what will happen next.

Three examples:

• At times a future event is mentioned earlier in the story, like a comment in a meeting between characters. The reader already knows that that there are issues that will occur.

• A character’s thoughts can also foreshadow. For example: “I knew that this is going to happen, why didn’t I believe her?”.

Symbolism is also used in foreshadowing. For example: The stones were greatly mentioned in the introduction of the short “The Lottery”.
