Space Wonder Project- Katelyn Simmons-Science10

How would we get to mars and how would we survive?

If the earth were to end and we would have to evacuate, the only option is mars. Mars is one of the better options out of all the other planets, but it is also a very cold climate. If we were to travel to mars, we would need a space suit because without it we would die with the loss of oxygen or from freezing to death. Mars would be very hard to survive on.
There have been signs of frozen water that is starting to melt, and plants could be grown into the soil with the right amount of fertilizer. We could possibly make a containment area to grow crops and to make a civilization.

For getting to mars, to carry enough for people we couldn’t just have a tiny spaceship we would need one big enough to contain enough resources to keep us alive. The spaceship would need to be a backup plan. If mars does not work, we would need resources to survive long enough inside a spaceship. The largest ship that has been built is the International Space Station (ISS). This spaceship weighs around 45,000kg, has a length of 73 meters, a height of 20 meters, and a width of over 100 meters.

The ISS would take around 273 to 340 days to get from earth to mars, depending on the weight of the spaceship it may take longer. Even if we were to use the ISS we would only be able to save up to eight people as that is the capacity, but 6 is preferred.

Core Competency Reflection:
I chose critical thinking because in order to finish my project I had to get all my information first.

Then I knew the next step was to go over my information and critique it. If I did not do this

then I would probably have had trouble to keep writing. This project was very fun as I got to explore a question that some scientists are also

thinking about. The fact that we could possibly live on mars is huge. I would love to do

another project like this and keep using my ideas. I would also enjoy asking more questions

for the future.

Blackberries: quintessential

Blackberries were originally found in Asia, North or South America or in Europe. This specie and plant type can survive temperatures that go from 0 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. But if someone were to grow these brambles its important to figure out what level of cold it can tolerate. There are over 12 different species of fresh blackberries in the woods and clearings in Canada. These blackberries belong to the Rubus genus in the Rosaceae family.

To keep black berries in a certain spot, one very effective way is to cover around the area in where you plan to either get rid of or keep contained. This can make clean up easier and minimize the risk of seeds or stems escaping and forming new plants. Also to remove the blackberry plant easier use your hands or heavy-duty garden scissors to cut the stem of the plant. By cutting the stem its easier to remove the roots from the ground.

Centipede: Geophilus flavus

Originally found in North America, especially in Louisiana, North and South Carolina, and Florida. They live underground in soiled burrows or above ground. The centipede is a generalist predator. They have adapted to eat a different variety of available prey. When centipedes were examined and found that plants are unimportant to their diets. Unless they are starved, they will not eat vegetables. Centipedes are known to eat different insects and other small animals. Centipedes eat spiders, cockroaches, moths, crickets, earthworms, bed bugs, and other centipedes. They have around 30 to 354 legs, they always have odd number pairs of legs. No centipede has exactly 100 legs.

Since centipedes invade homes in large numbers and are extremely fast. You may have to stomp on them, spray them with bug spray, and do not use a vacuum cleaner as they do not work. Also to catch a centipede set a trap in corners and crevices where they tend to hunt. Sticky traps are most effective for smaller centipedes as the bigger ones may escape leaving legs behind.
