Experiment #1: Take a small piece of steel wool (Iron) and stretch it out so that it has a large surface area. With a pair of tongs, place the steel wool into the flame of a Bunsen Burner.

What happened: The original sample of the steel wool was thin with a grey silver color, after getting burned by the Bunsen burner, the color became darker and it turned more grey. Tt also got thicker when it got burned.

 

Experiment #2: Allow the butane (C4H10) Lighter to burn for 10 seconds.

What happened: The butane created by the lighter is combusted in oxygen gas, creating carbon dioxide and water.

 

Experiment #3: In a small, graduated cylinder place 5.0ml of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Add small amount (tip of a scapula) of KI crystals. The KI is not part of the reaction it simply acts as a catalyst.

What happened: The process of the Decomposition was highly Exothermic, with a large amount of oxide gas, afterwards the liquid is changed to one of a brownish-yellow colour.

 

Experiment #4: Polish a small piece of copper wire and place it into a watch glass with a few drops of 0.1M Silver nitrate solution. Let the reaction sit for 10 min.

What happened: The copper wire began being encircled by a grey-ish substance, most likely the silver metal, until in the end the wire is dissolved into the wire and replaced by the Silver.

 

Experiment #5: Add 1 drop of 0.1M Potassium iodide to a drop of 0.1M Lead (II) nitrate in a spot plate.

What happened: The result was near instantaneous, with the two compounds forming a yellow liquid resembling water colouring or mustard.

 

Experiment #6: Add a few drops of 0.1M Sodium hydroxide and a few drops of 0.1M Sulphuric acid to a spot plate. Test both solutions beforehand with litmus paper. Repeat and mix the acid and the base in the spot plate, test with litmus paper.
