How do we understand galaxies when we can’t physically travel to them?

How big are the galaxies?

Our Milky Way galaxy is a large galaxy. Most of the stars are in a disk that is about 100,000 light years across in diameter and 3000 light years thick. Most of the galaxies in the universe are smaller than the Milky Way.

How many light years does it take to travel to another galaxy?

If we were to travel at the speed of light, it would take 2.5 million years to get to the destination. The closest galaxy (status of galaxy disputed) to the Milky Way would be the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy, which is about 25,000 light years from Earth.

What are the parts of a galaxy?

A galaxy contains stars, gas, and dust. In a galaxy like the Milky Way, the stars, gas, and dust are organized into a bump, which is a “disk” containing “spiral arms”. Elliptical galaxies have a bulge-like central region but do not have a disk.

What type of galaxies are there in the world?

There are three main types of galaxies: Elliptical, Spiral, and Irregular. These types are divided into a system which is called a fork diagram. Elliptical galaxies are spherical, formed by smaller galaxies and they collide with each other. Spiral galaxies are one of the most studied galaxies. An irregular galaxy is a hotbed of star formation.

What parts of the galaxy can you see from earth?

The parts you can see depend on your location on Earth. You can always see some part of the circle. The galactic core of the Milky Way is in the constellation Sagittarius, which is located to the South of Canada, and only visible during the Summer.

The digital tools I used to make my project was Gale Learning and Google. The process I used to investigate this topic was I first made up my own sub ideas, then researched more about them to get the conclusion to my big question. I cited my information by taking the URL from Google based on the filtered top choices. This project was a big challenge for me because this was the first project I did in science and I was a little confused about my question.  If I would have started the project earlier, I may have finished it on time. That is what I will do next time.
