Is our world is built purely on single stories and assumptions?

By watching Adichie’s TED Talk it made me realize that it is important for everyone to be open to new things and new ideas. Single stories are things that everyone has made for each other whether that be just seeing someone walking past you or even one of your friends. Everyone sees you from a different standpoint and a lot of the time they are wrong about your appearances. In Adichie’s TED talk she talked about a boy named Fide, a very broke young kid that she would only hear bad remarks about by her parents calling him very poor. When she went to Fides village one day she met his mother and was brought a present they made a basket, a beautifully handcrafted piece made by Fides Brother. Adichie said “It occurred to me that no one in his family could make something” She was shocked. After all, she never expected they could do or make anything that beautiful because she only heard the worse of them. She only painted one picture for Fide only one single story. I would recommend for everyone to take 15 minutes and watch the video.

When watching Wesch’s video, I learned that trying new things is a huge part of life. Even if you don’t like the activity you tried to at least you know that you gave it a try, it is a start to something new that you could enjoy later down the road in life. You should never criticize someone on something they enjoy just because you don’t think it is “cool” or “Interesting” especially if you have never tried it. In Wesch’s video, he talked about how our symbols define our status and I think that he is 100% correct. The things we do differentiate us from others, give us status and separate ourselves from others. Our Cultural and Social capital help us build alliances with others of the same status by our taste and values. A quote that Wesch said caught my attention, “Learning to love some musical genre you once hated is not going to solve the deep divides of our world,

I watched two videos, The first one spoke about how one single African male named Daryl Davis a jazz and blues musician, was able to speak his mind from past experiences and make 200 KKK members realize their beliefs were wrong which ended up making them leave the cult. “Daryl Davis began to start collecting KKK memorabilia as a reminder to him of his historical culture and how far the civil rights movement has come“. By collecting the items, he had met many members of the KKK or family members of them, all he would do is sit down with them and talk to them. That little bit of change and realization that Daryl Davis could make was incredible.

The second video that I watched was ProCon.org’s video, Critical Thinking Explained, which reveals how critical thinking leads to “greater

citizen involvement” when it “comes to the most important and controversial issues in our society today,” issues such as the polarization of ideas and people due to intolerance. We use critical thinking every day like when grocery shopping or when picking what movie to watch. But when it comes to the most important social issues in our society, we often find it too difficult or time-consuming to think critically. We experience a lot of fake and biased information daily. When you critically think you need to push away the confusion by questioning statements and assumptions. Discussion and debates can promote critical thinking, that’s why it is very important to have class discussions or even just conversations with new people. It is scientifically proven that people who take part in-class discussions, a vote later in life, follow political news, and have confidence in their ability to influence public policy.

By having a class discussion about Adiche’s TED talk and Wesch’s video we were all able to hear from different people’s viewpoints on a single story or their viewpoints on trying new things. I found that class discussions about serious issues and topics such as the videos we watched are always important and useful for more information to be taken away.

The Instagram challenge that I took part in with Ranya was very interesting when I started the interview we had not talked much before this time, so it was a bit awkward at first but later we were both able to talk to each other with no problem. I learned that we shared a lot of the same interests and more about each other’s backgrounds. This activity was very interesting, and I feel like school should try and involve people more as Ms. Shong did with our class

We never know the worth of water till the well is dry.

We all need water to survive, correct? Then why are we shortening our life span day after day?

We need to keep our water clean; Water pollution is a problem all around the world, including in Canada where the rates of clean water and sea animal life have been decreasing year after year. If we do not stop polluting the world’s water, we might not survive into the next century.

British poet W.H Auden once noted, “Thousands have lived without love, not one without water.” Water is one of the most important things in this world since our body needs clean

water to survive. If we did not have clean water, we would die. Many people have tried to see how long you can last without clean water, and it turns out, not long. The amount of time a human can last without having water is three days. Perhaps people need to learn to love nature and how it provides for us more than it profits for us.

Water pollution doesn’t just affect us, humans, it affects all animals in the water. That ranges from turtles and fish to sharks and whales. For example, plastic gets stuck in fish’s gills and fins and makes it so they can’t breathe. Plastic also destroys habitats which can wipe out entire species. We need to realize that we will destroy all life when we destroy water.

As we know right now Earth is the only planet with life on it, the only place with water. If we end up messing up and polluting the world more, we will not have a backup plan nor another way to live. We will be in demand of water and no way to have a freshwater source to survive. Ways that we can make changes to stop water pollution are, not pouring fat and grease down drains, eating more organic food, cutting down meat consumption, avoiding anything plastic, and planting some trees. By doing this we can get more oxygen from planting trees, prevent plastic water bottles and plastic bags from getting into our freshwater. We can’t blow it good planets are hard to find

British Columbia has massive open-pit coal mines which are polluting waters, damaging the fish population, and contaminating drinking water the water is spreading the Canadian/U.S border and is now in the high potential to affect the USA.

Officials in Canada are reporting that drinking tap water is not safe, after finding possible evidence of gasoline in the tap water. The Nunavut government is expecting tests to come back next week, until then, the government warned that newborns and infants should not be bathed in tap water The city’s investigation into its main drinking water source began last week after residents complained their tap water had a gasoline-like smell Officials announced there was observed evidence of possible hydrocarbon contamination at the water treatment plant.

People say that it is big-name companies that are leading us to water pollution In our rivers and lakes. The top five companies whose branded items were found were Nestle, Tim Hortons, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, and McDonald’s. Greenpeace ranked 10 of the most common items found. Food wrappers were at the top of the list while containers were at the bottom. All companies received these and agreed to make changes to their problems by 2025

Water pollution is a huge problem right now and we need to take a stand and fix this problem. If we do not end up fixing this issue, we could be seeing complete water shortages come 2050 in British Columbia. It is small things that people can do to make a change, it’s just a matter of people doing it. Will you be that person?

Core Competencies

A way that it helped me with my critical thinking was when I picked my four quotes to do this project it made me think hard about the thoughts I was going to use to elaborate on the quotes. The one quote that I talked about regarding social media made me think about how this world might look in a couple of years.

Kaeden Dhanji’s Goals

My goal is to gain muscle and lose fat in 6 months, I will complete this goal by working out 5 times a week, make a schedule, and eat healthy and proper food. No fast food. If I need help with this goal I will ask my dad for advice, I will not run into any obstacles during this. I will go home after school every day other than my two break days. No video games or hanging out with friends till I have finished my workout. this goal will start December 10th, 2020, and end June 10th, 2021.

Get at least a 70% mark in all my classes by the end of this school year.

By the end of the school year, This goal is realistic because it will be hard for me. After all, I do not do that well in school, but I will work as hard as I can in class and at home. If I ever need help I will ask my teachers and dad. Friends and video games, I will not even use my phone or video games until homework is finished.
