‘Hope’ by, Julia Yaskowich
I look down and see a shadow
A shadow cast upon the humongous pupils of my crystalized eyes
I see death look me up and down, only to judge my situation by appearance
I look up and see the clouds
A single cloud floats on an ocean, swimming through my eyelids like a dream
I see Hope look me in the eyes, only to see the potential in my situation by heart
Is this a dream or reality?
Is my imagination too great for this life or is it too small to be successful?
My eyes begin to spill liquid that I know of oh so well
My hands are clams, my heart is a drum, my eyes are sail boats
From the top of my body to the bottom, I am lost
As I float from the bottom to the top like a balloon, I am successful

The newly successful writer, Julia Yaskowich has released her new poem called ‘Hope’. This astonishing piece of work has changed the world’s perspective on the topic of hope itself; The big theme in Yaskowich’s poem is when in times of trouble, what gives us hope? The immediate answer is difficult, but if we broke down the poem line by line, the piece would be much easier to understand. When Yaskowich says; “A single cloud floats on an ocean, swimming through my eyelids like a dream” it shows the reader that the person in the poem is looking at the dreams they want to pursue, but unfortunately it’s in the sky which makes the person in the poem distraught that they will never be able to reach his dreams; However, in the last line when Yaskowich says; “As I float from the bottom to the top like a balloon, I am successful.” It symbolizes that the person in the poem has now busted out of their comfort zone to reach their goals/ dreams which gives themselves undeniable hope that they will become successful further down their career/ hobby. Back to the original question, in times of trouble, what gives us hope? The long-term answer would be the attitude someone has going into the times of trouble; Without the right mind set, trying to talk someone’s way out of things won’t motivate the person to proceed in their goal/dream; Hope is what keeps us alive.
Julia – your poem is lovely… great devices: …spill liquid from my eyes…” is especially a great image. your video and link to Shane Koyczan are appropriate… my only complaint is that your allusions are unclear to me….
