Step 1: Once you are put into groups, begin to formulate your arguments. You will be arguing that either:

  • businesses should be allowed to have their signs only in the language of their choice
  • businesses should not be allowed to have their signs only in the language of their choice.

The video below is a comedy sketch showing a bad debate but you should be able to get some ideas and have a laugh or two.

Step 2: Once your main arguments are finalized, you will need to prepare your counter arguments (rebuttal).  This means, you need to have a response ready to back up your argument and disprove the other side’s argument.  See below for some tips:

Collect evidence to support both arguments for and against the issue: “Should business signs be permitted to be in a non-official language of the country they are in?” (in this case, should business signs be allowed to only be Chinese where English and French are Canada’s official languages)

 

Compare/Contrast

Watch the movie Seven Pounds and take notes to help support your response to the question: “Prove whether or not Will Smith’s character is altruistic or not.”

You will be using your evidence from the movie to write a compare/contrast response with The Giving Tree.

Poetry Day 9 – Personal Poetry Assignment

Personal Poem Assignment

You are free to choose whichever form of poem you choose

Your poem must:

  • be a minimum of 12 lines
  • must have a title
  • have a minimum of three different poetic devices
  • a visual component that relates to your poem

You will also need to hand in an analysis your poem which identifies and explains:

  • the type of poem you have written and why
  • your inspiration/motivation
  • your theme
  • rhyme scheme (if you used one)
  • why you used rhyme or not
  • identify the 3 examples of poetic devices used
  • anything else you believe that’s important to explain

You will also need to have a recorded video of you reading your poem embedded into your post

Task #1 – Find a ballad for Monday’s class, analyse it,  and upload both to your blog.

Task #2 – Answer the following questions and be prepared to read your poem and analysis for Monday’s class.

  1. Why did you select the poem?
  2. What makes it a ballad poem?
  3. Which poetic devices does the poet use? Provide examples.
  4. What is the poem’s theme?
  5. Provide any other important or interesting information about the poem.
