Aquatic Volunteer:

(The information is on p.24)
I found this information in a Port Coquitlam Leaflet. I was looking for an opportunity to complete my Aquatic First Aid course and I found this add. I have been looking into doing this with a friend for a while and it seemed like the perfect volunteer opportunity for this assignment.
Question #1 – What is the volunteer opportunity that you are researching in your community?
The volunteer opportunity that I am researching is an Aquatic Volunteer in the city of PoCo. The only training required is to have completed the Bronze Medallion course, which I have finished. the role that you play is that you help teach kids how to swim and help out with swimming lessons. I already volunteer with the PoCo Marlins and teach kids from ages 3 – 10 how to swim, so I think that this would be another way to get involved in the community that I would benefit from, and the rest of the community would benefit from. I am researching this because I had thought that this opportunity would be interesting, but I have never had time to look into it.
Question #2 – How could this volunteer opportunity benefit your future?
This volunteer opportunity could benefit me by giving me a better way to get involved in the community. It would also help me to know some strategies to help kids to learn how to swim. I am hoping to also become a lifeguard in the future, so this would help me get involved in aquatics in PoCo. It would also help because the people who run the aquatics program would know who I am, and they would potentially put me higher on the list to get a job with them in the future. If the aquatic supervisors know that I was a dedicated worker who does my job well, they would probably keep it in mind and when I apply for a job with PoCo, I would be able to be considered and hopefully get a job faster.
Question #3 – Why are you passionate about getting involved within this field?
I am passionate about getting involved in Aquatics in PoCo because I would like to become a lifeguard when I am 16. It is also a great opportunity to learn more about teaching younger kids to swim. I am always looking for other ways to help out and to get more time to be involved in the pool. I will be able to work on the more specific parts of teaching and knowing how to help out. I am very passionate about swimming and I would really like to have fun and enjoy volunteering, and I would be able to enjoy helping teach people how to swim. I love to help out little kids and I think that helping kids would be putting together both of my passions; swimming and helping out little kids.
Task #2 – Employment Opportunity
Aquatic Leader/Lifeguard :

In the far future I am looking to maybe be a Doctor or a Lawyer, but for now I am thinking that I will be a lifeguard. You can become a lifeguard when you turn 16, have you NL certification and have your Water Safety Instructor certification. I am looking into this because I have already gotten my Bronze Cross certification and this job seemed to fit with my volunteer opportunity.
Question #1 – What is the volunteer opportunity that you are researching in your community?
The volunteer opportunity that I am researching in my community is becoming an aquatic leader/lifeguard. Being an aquatic leader in the city of Port Coquitlam means you are a lifeguard, at the same time as being a swim instructor and helping out with birthday parties. I am specifically looking into being an aquatic leader in the city of PoCo because I live about two blocks away from the new PoCo rec center, and it would be very easy to simply walk to and from work.
Question #2 – How could this employment opportunity benefit your future?
This employment opportunity could help me in many ways; for example, I would like to go to college/university in the future and working as a lifeguard would get me some money. Not only would I have an income, but I would be able to make connections in the community that I might otherwise not have to chance to. I would also be able to be a lifeguard at things I already attend for swimming, such as swim meets, or swim practises.
Question #3 – What kind of qualifications would this opportunity require you to have?
For this opportunity, you would have had to complete all the lifesaving courses up to National Lifeguard and have completed your Water Safety Instructor courses. You also would have to have some experience in the pool, for example having done swim team for a few years, or finishing all your swim lessons up to level 10.
Question #4 – What current skill and qualifications do you bring to the job?
As I said earlier, I have already completed my Bronze Cross and Medallion courses and I am a a swim coach for the PoCo Marlins. These qualifications would help me greatly in this job area because I already know how to swim strongly and well, and I am able to help younger children to learn how to swim.
Question #5 – What steps do you need to take in order to be suitable for this position?
I need to complete the rest of the lifesaving courses and finish my water safety instructor courses. I also am hoping to volunteer to help at the pools to get on the radar of the Aquatic Supervisors.
