Rumours ~ Mini Inquiry

Rumours

By Jessica M

Should of kept quiet, not saying a word.

It’s a wildfire, burning up each tree

Cracking glass, as its reaching out carefree

Life is extraordinary, doesn’t mean

it will stay the same forever. Where here

lives the good, the greatest, the bad, the worst

There would be an end. There would be nothing

left to burn. Splitting would come to an end.

But what kind end, would it be. No one

In the world gets what they want, and

that is beautiful. Whatever happens

would affect something, actions connected.

You cared, you really did. But telling lies

will only make more lies. The power of

individuals was proven when the

rumours started to spread like fire and glass.

“Rumours” by Jessica M is a closed poem, because it’s sorted into stanzas, and each line is 10 syllables. It has some aspects of an open poem, because not every line rhymes, nor does it always finish the sentence in its line. The poem explores how our actions are interconnected, and how a person can make a change. The poem has metaphors like the fire spreading, and the glass splitting, making more cracks. Which gives it the title, rumours, as they can also spread unstoppably. The line “Life is extraordinary” seems to be inspired from Dead Poets Society, said by Mr. Keating. Another is from the novel, Ready Player One “No one In the world gets what they want, and that is beautiful.” It ties into the poem because of how when something spreads, the end result is not always what you want it to be. The poem seems to be about our actions interconnecting. Like when someone tells a person something, what stops them from spreading the info? After reading it, the tone seems to be giving us an insight into feeling some sort of guilt. How we lack seeing from a different point of view, giving us an unexpected outcome. Maybe the original person who told the second person about it, didn’t except them to tell everyone else, and now they feel guilty of doing so. We don’t know how much impact one person can make.

Didn’t really learn anything I didn’t know ~ Not to trust social media. Because anyone can make an account, and be whatever they want online. Any name they want, any profile picture, and they would pretend to be someone else. And sometimes that might give them power or attention, but no one knows who it is.

2nd Article

Don’t really understand it when I started reading. So there was this thing called “please find my missing relative” which was basically about how most of them were fake. 2nd thing was “don’t trust the tabs”. I mean, I know not to trust anything much on the internet, because they could be fake. If it seems weird than its probably fake. And its the internet :/

Hubbard2019DataAnalysisThoughts

What I think:

Statistics can lead to false information. People might believe in them because its what other people are saying. They could be unfair, or could not. Statistics are information that people put down to show you information which can be misleading.

After reading:

We are likely only to know about a few personal cases, and not overall. Individual cases can be biased. Statistics can give us a better understanding than individual ones.

Statistics also have negatives. Faulty statistics, bad sampling, unfair poll questions, statistics that are true but misleading, ranking statistics, and qualifiers on statistics.

We should be careful when looking at them. They can be good, but at the same time, misleading.

FAULTY STATISTICS

“86% of statistics are made up on the spot, you know – the remaining 24% are mathematically flawed. – From an internet message board.”

If we put exact numbers in stuff people would believe it more then just ‘most’ or something.

BAD SAMPLING

Just because you ask a few people on things doesn’t mean everyone thinks the same. Also it depends who you ask, where your asking it, and if they get to choose to respond or not.

UNFAIR POLL QUESTIONS

Sometimes the questions are worded to get a specific answer out of you.

STATISTICS THAT ARE TRUE BUT MISLEADING

The statistics can be true but they can pick which numbers from there to show you. They can pick the start and end points and make it seem like however they want.

RANKING STATISTICS

Its not really clear what category it can be in. Another is it doesn’t tell us much about the actual amount.

QUALIFIERS ON STATISTICS

How you describe something might not seem important but really is.

PERCENTAGES

It depends on the total amount. Sometimes they might give a % to make it seem more, or sometimes they would rather say the actual number.

Prediction on how the British will govern Quebec

As a British official, I realize there are many alternatives to governing Quebec.  I have chosen the policy of Assimilation to ensure the colony is properly run.

Assimilation is when we make the French culture into British. We will also invite our other British immigrants to Quebec. If we did isolation, or letting the French Canadiens do what they’re doing, who knows what trouble they’ll come up with?! We’re kind enough to let them even stay here, and not deporting them off like the Acadians. There should be one culture, so everything stays organized (And cause ours’s is better). Since the French Canadiens and/or Natives peoples will join our British laws, customs, language, and religion it will be unlikely they’ll fight now, since we are all one.

As I have outlined above, I believe the best policy for governing Quebec is Assimilation. This will ensure that the colony will remain under British control and provide wealth for our glorious country.

Grammar Video Project – “Modifiers – Misplaced and Dangling modifiers”

Misplaced and dangling modifiers. They are similar, but not the same. Misplaced is when the thing your describing, is put in a wrong place causing it to sound weird or confusing. While dangling is when it’s not clear, or doesn’t make sense. Here are some examples. This one is a misplaced modifier.

“While she was jogging, Rose found a blue guy’s hat.”

In that example, how its written, it seems like the guy was blue. Since it says ‘Blue guy’s hat’ If you want it to make it so that the hat was blue, you would put it like,

“While she was jogging, Rose found a guy’s blue hat.”

Sometimes moving just a word would fix a misplaced modifier. Or you might need to move a couple of words. But for dangling modifiers, sometimes you need to add a few more words.

“While looking at the sun, the clouds started to rain.”

It’s not really clear who’s looking at the sun. Since ‘the clouds’ is right after, it sounds like the clouds are looking at the sun. So you need to add someone. Like add a subject.

“While I was looking at the sun, I saw the clouds were starting to rain.”

It’s sometimes confusing to tell whether it’s a misplaced or dangling modifier. Dangling modifiers are usually missing something, like a person. So it would make the sentence unclear of who or what its describing. When you fix a dangling sentence, it usually takes a few more words, or sometimes rearranging the whole sentence. Misplaced sentences are describing the wrong thing. So that it sounds crazy or weird. All you need to do is move one or a few words so that it sounds normal again.

Misplaced and dangling modifiers – Mini test

Fix the following sentences:

(Misplaced modifiers)

  1. They saw a bird behind the dog flying.
  1. Crying on the examination table, the doctor gave the small child his vaccine.

(Dangling modifiers)

  1. Raised in Texas, it is natural to like barbecue
  2. before finishing breakfast, the cereal was soggy
  3. At the age of 5, my father took me to Mexico

*ANSWERS*

#1 They saw a bird flying behind the dog

Now the modifier describes the bird and not the dog.

#2 The doctor gave the small child crying on the examination table his vaccine.

The modifier now correctly describes the child as crying, not the doctor.

#3 Raised in Texas, I natural to like barbecue

Now there’s a known subject and we know who was raised in Texas.

#4 Before I finished breakfast, my cereal was soggy

We now have a subject and know for sure that the cereal was soggy before I finished breakfast

#5 When I was five, my father took me to Mexico

The original meaning of the sentence before it got transformed would mean that when my father was five years old his own father took him to Mexico which is not what the writer was implying

Community Connection

Community Connection.

At first, I was unsure of who to choose. Me and my friend went around asking for people, and I found someone who share a hobby I like. The person I chose, was named Tervola. That was their username. I ended up interviewing them, because we shared many hobbies. We both liked video gaming, but I chose do to art in the end. Because she was an artist, and I’m, learning.

Here is our interview, word for word.

Why are you passionate about your job? “Cause I plan on working at cartoon network or somewhere similar, like just in the entertainment and animation industry in general.”

What obstacles have you faced to get you where you are today? “And uhh, cartoon network shows were an escape for me as a kid.”

What advice would you pass on to someone interested in what you are doing? Advice would be, do LOTS of studies. Don’t limit yourself to drawing just one thing. Its good to be able to draw a lot of different things like, people and animals and cars and buildings and environment.”

Would you be open to further contact from Riverside students and if so, how can someone contact you? Probably not, I have a lot of stressful things going on right now. Like moving and starting therapy and stuff. Later.”

Where do you imagine yourself in the future? I hope that I’m able to create cartoons for cartoon network but realistically, I see myself doing free lance work until I can get a foot in the door. I can draw animals pretty realistically. I’d like to work at c n making cartoons but realistically I see myself doing free lance artwork until I can get a foot in the door. Which means until I can get my name noticed, but thats a time away.”

How did you feel when you first started? “I honestly didn’t think my skill level would ever get this good, but I’m still improving a ton.”

This was the interview I did with Tervola. We didn’t meet in person. We actually communicated in an uncommon way, but it still worked. Anyways, she was an artist and can draw pretty well, and she hopes to go work for cartoons. But she isn’t famous right now, and hopes to be. I decided to interview her because, I wanted to learn from an artist too, and she seemed friendly. We are now friends. One of the many things I got from the interview, is to practice to draw a variety of things, and not focus on one thing. And no matter where you are at right now, you can always keep improving. If you have goals and stuff, its important not to give up. One day, you’ll get there. I hope she gets her art successful one day, and I hope I’ll achieve some of my goals too.

This is how we communicated. It was live at the time, but here is some screenshots of our characters. Below is how we chatted. (Self taken picture)

When we first did this interview, I thought it was just another project. I had no idea who to interview, and was so happy when I found her. During the actual interview, when we first started, I was kind of nervous. But it was actually very fun, chatting to her, and learning. This entire experience, the most challenging part was actually trying to find someone. I didn’t do a family member on purpose, so I can find someone who I didn’t know online. And I didn’t just want to pick anyone. I wanted to find someone who, actually understands, and feels the same. How you can always keep improving, and when you have a dream to achieve, never give up. Tervola was also older, so it was nice to hear from someone who has, experienced more? Anyways, when I finally found someone, I was thinking so hard how to ask her, to help me with my interview. While we did the interview, I was really glad it was going well. She was really helpful before, during, and after.

This entire project, went better then I thought. We were both into it, and didn’t get distracted. Hopefully I explained it well enough. Putting it into text wouldn’t be the same as actually being there and witnessing it. But I hope it sums it up a bit. The experience also gave me more encouragement to draw more, and make more art, and doing the things I enjoy. Also I just put the stuff we said in the interview and didn’t include our other chats. But just letting you know we had more conversations too. I might’ve said it too many times, but I’m really impressed of how this all turned out. It doesn’t matter what I get on this project, but the experience really meant something. It was nice chatting to someone who you don’t know much about, over things we have in common.

I got something out of this interview, and I would guess Tervola did too. Its unlikely she would go around interviewing people, and having a whole on conversation with a stranger. But hopefully sitting down chatting with me, gave her an idea of how she’s doing, and more hope. Cause we probably both don’t do this often. In the future, I think she would make an excellent artist.

In the future, I hope to continue doing art. Things related to art. Whether it be drawing, painting, writing, music, any art. By doing this assignment, I learned how to get better, and be better. And if I really want something, it’s important not to give up on it.

I think I got better at communicating to others again. Or at least online. My typing is not bad, I would say, so thats why I decided to write it this time, instead of making a video. I actually did take a video of the whole interview, but I’m deciding not to upload it.  It would be easier for me to explain writing it. And I hope you enjoy reading my experience. Hopefully it will be just as fun as I’m writing it.

This drawing to the left is one of her artworks. It was digitally drawn, and it only had a few tools and colours to work with, but she managed to make it so good 😮 Credit to Tervola for the picture.

Chemistry in My World

Chemistry in My World

Video about SIM card. No voiceover, only music. Music and pictures are not mine.

My summary of the video: SIM cards are made from silicon. Silicon, gold, plastic, and a bit of phosphorus. The card is important because it lets you use the communication things on your phone, like calling and messages. Many people buy them. So, is silicon safe for the environment? Apparently, it is even less harmful to humans then plastic. So silicon is safer then plastic, which is good. Or as long as you recycle it properly.  Giesecke & Devrient are the names of people who created the SIM cards. There are many types of SIM cards too. Full, mini, micro, nano, and embedded.

REFLECTION – Define. Discover. Deliver. Debrief

What we had to do for our project is we had to pick something, like an object, and learn about it. Before that, we first got into a group of 3 of our choice, and started brainstorming some ideas. For my group, we chose the SIM Card. Our question was ‘How Does a phone’s SIM Card connect to chemistry and the world?’ We had to research about it, and put it into a final ‘product’, as we did a video. Then write a reflection.

Since we couldn’t just search up an answer for ‘How Does a phone’s SIM Card connect to chemistry and the world?’, we had to make smaller questions, and get answers for those. Here is a list of all the smaller questions we made.

What elements are used to make the sim card of a smartphone?

What kind of compound is it?

What affects do simcard have on water?

What can simcards do?

How many chemicals does a simcard contain

How many different types are there?

Are their materials in the simcard that can harm our environment?

Is there a better alternative material?

Who made the simcard?

<– What you see here is our list of questions, and our research we did for them.

For our final product, we made the notes more organized. We split up the questions so we could each focus on some, then added what we found on the sheet. At first we weren’t sure what to make as the final product, but I wanted to make a video, so I asked my group and they agreed. It was a bit of a risk making a video, because they do take time to make. I only know how to edit on iMovie, because its the only editor I ever used. I volunteered to edit the whole video, because though I wasn’t the #1 in the world for editing, I wasn’t bad. We spent a couple days getting good information down, so I had little time to edit. I still tried my best with the time I had, and the final result wasn’t bad 🙂 Because to make the video, you needed all the information.

Though if I had more time, it could probably be a bit better. One of the things we could’ve improve is maybe getting our research done faster. Another thing I forgot to mention is that for the video, we tried putting in our voices to narrate it, but when I tried to edit, the background noise was really loud. So I just didn’t add it in. Overall, it was nice working in a group project again, so we can all learn from each other, and help one another.
