Mind Map – “A Private Experience”
“A Private Experience” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a short story about ethnic and religious conflict. The mind map looks into the story with seven different categories. The story is told in third person, but because you can see only Chika’s thoughts, it makes it third person limited omniscient. I chose the photo and quote in the mind map to show that. The physical setting for “a private experience” is first set in a marketplace in Nigeria. Later, Chika and the other woman hide in an empty shop when the riot happens. Emotional setting composes of fear, tension, and confusion. Chika does not know the woman, nor does Chika know why the riot happened. But because of the fear from the uproar, they hide together. The picture I chose is a market, showing the physical setting at the beginning of the story. The quote I chose shows the emotional setting of Chika when she looks outside. As you may already know, Chika is the protagonist of “a private experience.” We see multiple sides of her, in present and future self, making her a round and dynamic character. Dynamic because of the way the riot changes her views of the other woman. The antagonist of the story is the riot itself. Thus, making the conflict person vs society, or even society vs society. I chose the quote because it shows the roundness and dynamics of Chika. The theme for “a private experience” shows that even in times of religous conflicts, there will be some who still have amity. Chika and the other woman are from different religions, and even though the riot started because of religion differences, they both decide to set those differences aside and help each other. I chose this picture because it looks like two woman, with some sort of religion, just like in the story. I chose this quote because it shows that the other woman is Muslim because of her scarf, yet she uses it to help Chika’s leg. The plot of the short story starts from the two woman hiding together in an abandoned store, hiding from the riot. Through a series of flash forwarding and back, they soon get to know more about each other, and also learn why the riot had begun in the first place. When the riot dies down, they part ways with Chika keeping the woman’s scarf as a reminder of what they’ve been through. I chose this picture to show what the riot looks like. The quote I chose because it sums up the ending of the plot nicely. For the literary criticism lens, I chose psychological. We look at the psychological motivations of the character to find out more about the character. Even though theres only one riot going on, there are many different reactions that different characters have. So using this lens, it can better help analyze the characters. I chose this picture and quote because it takes a look at what Chika is doing, which helps us understand what she is feeling at that time. There were many symbols in this story. One of them being the scarf, which at the end symbolized the bond between the two woman. Chika kept the scarf because she wanted something to remember the woman, the riot, and the time they had together. The woman’s scarf also helped Chika when she was bleeding. I think the scarf also symbolizes friendship, and hope. Chika hopes that she finds her sister. The riot symbolizes violence. It started from the conflict of 2 religions, and then turned into something bigger. When there is violence, people will act in different ways. Some fight it, some leave it, and in this case, some hide from it. In the beginning, when Chika and the woman first meet, they say that they lost their stuff. Chika lost a bag, and the woman lost a necklace. I think those items symbolizes their differences. To lose those items, it represents putting those differences aside. That is why even though they are from different religions, they manage to respect each other and hide together.
The main colours I put for this mind map were black, orange, and white. I did it black and orange to make it look like a riot, or like a fire from the riot. The white was so that the text could be seen clearly. The first ‘slide’ is an overview of all the different topics, including a picture. Then I made it go through all the different topics in different slides, putting that same picture. I did the description text black, and the quote text orange, so that it could be differentiated more easily. For the slides, I made it fill up the page with information, yet also make it simple enough so its not confusing.
Logo Design
Ideas for your Logo and how they connect to you
My original ideas ended up being very different to my final. But from my original ideas, I built and changed things from that which eventually made it into what it is now. At first I starting sketching simple designs/shapes, but then I thought about doing an animal because I like animals. It took a while to decide with animal I should do but I ended up choosing the jackal. Here is the photo I used for tracing.
Research
When deciding which animal I was going to do, it took a very long time. I first thought of doing my favourite animal, but then it was too hard. Then I kept thinking about it, and remembered there was this book I used to read, and there was many animals including the jackal in it. The one in the book was not the main characters but it was cool and I remember it. So then I started researching more about the meaning.
“Jackals represent tricksters, inventors, youth, fun, intelligence, and tactical people. Many legends which are found all over the world implies that a jackal is a lone animal that walks in forests and deserts.”

Objective – What is the Purpose | Goal of the Game
Objective is to get the most points with your 10 balls within the 30 second time limit.
Description – Describe Your Game and What it Should Look Like
This game should be played with at least a minimum of 3 buckets to a maximum of about twelve buckets. Place the buckets at least six feet or more in front of you on the floor or on a raised surface and at least a foot or more apart in a horizontal or vertical manner. The buckets can be colour coded or they can be identified with numbers. The 1st bucket(s) should be 5 points, the second should be 10 points, and the third bucket(s) should be 15 points and so on. For each additional bucket(s) you can increase the point by 5 points. The buckets can be the same size or different sizes, it depends on the player and how challenging you want the game to be.
This game can be played by anyone of any age but in order to help younger children between the ages of 3-8, with their coordination, you may want to use larger buckets and put them in closer proximity to the children. In order to increase the complexity of the game you can add buckets of the same size or different sizes and lay them out randomly or in multiple rows. For example, you can have four small buckets at five points, four medium buckets at ten points and four large buckets at 15 points. You can set the buckets out randomly amongst each other or you can set each size of bucket in a horizontal or vertical row. You can use soft balls, bean bags, foam balls, kids toy balls, or crumpled paper. If players do not have balls or buckets to play the game, the game can me modified by using plastic cups and crumpled paper instead of buckets and balls |

Rules of the Game – Describe the Rules
Any number of people can play this game This game can be played with each player participating one at a time or by having two or more players participate at the same time. If a player gets a point after the time limit it will not count During the time of covid remember to adhere to the 6 feet distancing rule For teens and adults playing the game remember to try and remain at least 6 feet away from the closest bucket Each person should have 10 balls and a 30 second time limit (the number of balls can be changed) |
|
Strategies | Tactics | Progressions – Can it Evolve |
A strategy is to try and perfect your aim, you don’t want to throw the ball too far, or too close. You want the aim to be just right so it gets into the bucket.
You can throw your first one, and based on how far it goes, use that to measure how hard or soft your next ones will be. |
To develop your eye hand coordination and to challenge yourself, you can try standing farther away from the buckets.
If a player(s) does not have the required items they can try using something as simple as the pockets of a shoe holder or plastic cups Another idea is to add more buckets so that it challenges you to move and think faster to get more points within the time limit. To increase the level of competition for multiple players, add additional buckets and have everyone play in a circular manner while trying to score the most points within the time limit. |
Equipment – List What is Needed | Safety Considerations – Safety First |
10 balls ( i.e. tennis balls or golf balls), bean bags or styrofoam balls,
3 or more buckets or plastic cups One or more players A marker (to indicate the number of points each bucket is worth) Or colour coded buckets or plastic cups Some method of timing yourself |
Make sure you are socially distancing from the person in front of you.
Wear gloves if you choose to share the balls with each other. Or use/ bring your own balls. Play the game outside or in an area without any breakable items. To reduce safety concerns is to use soft balls,,bean bags or styrofoam balls |
REFLECTION
I think this project went well. The planning and video ended up good. My role in the project was editing the video and helping with the planning part fill out thing. Overall everything went pretty smoothly in my opinion and it was good. Since I had edited a lot of videos before making this one wasn’t that hard and I knew what to do. We made a google docs so we could all edit the document above, so that went well and we got that finished. To improve for next time, we can fix some things from the feedback we got. Like the time limit may be too short to throw all the balls in, or stuff like if it bounces in but then bounces out would it still count. For our game, they also said that they liked that it was simple enough to understand yet challenging enough to be fun. And also that the video was good.

Core Competent Canadians
What did you know about Core Competencies before this activity?
I knew that they were skills that you can have or use. And you get them by experience, not like learning about them. There are different core competencies.
How can your knowledge of the Core Competencies help you in your school life? Personal life?
It shows that you can reflect on yourself, and what you’re thinking. If you do an activity or something, you will know how to sort it into a core competencies and reflect on how you did. It can help with your personal life, or your future job.
Other thoughts, wonderings, and reflections.
I wonder if there are more competencies out there, not just these ones. Maybe in the future they will add more to the list. Reflecting on your self is not an easy thing to do. In the future I hope to get better. The activity we did was matching up famous people to which core competencies it was best to.
