Racism

Racism, an act of segregation and bigotry, it has always been around, from the 1900’s to now there have been different events and forms of racism that have taken place. There have been different ways to try and get rid of it and ways to approach it. At the time “To Kill a Mocking Bird” is set, racism was a big part of everyone’s life. For example, the Great Depression, this takes place during the 1930’s. The Great Depression hurt many people and their lives but especially for African American’s who were unemployed 50% more than white workers. African American’s were excluded from all government roles. Today, racism still takes place, you can look at the United States President Donald Trump as an example, but more relating to youth in high school, we can find racism in our language and acts. Kids now a days look at the subject lightly, they avoid it and joke about the issue. Using racial expressions and words. It is such a sensitive topic because it is so personal, so when racist things are said people laugh it off, avoiding the topic because they aren’t sure how to approach it.
