Week 7 – PreCalc 11

This week in Pre-Calc we learned about discriminants. A discriminant gives information about the roots of the quadratic equation. We use b^2 -4ac to find the value.

  • If it is less than 0, there are no real roots.
  • If it is equal to 0, there’s one real root.
  • If it is greater than, 0 there are two real roots.

Ex: 2x^2 -7x +3 = 0

a=2, b=-7 c=3

step 1: (-7)^2 -4(2)(3)

step 2: 49 - 24

step 3: 25

The discriminant isĀ 25, because it is greater than 0, this means that this quadratic equation has two real roots.
