Unit #2 -Sculpting an Endangered Animal

A great site to start checking into at risk animals is the “World Wildlife Fund of Canada” website

PART 1:   Listen to this podcast about at-risk species here in Canada and two people who are working to help them:

https://wwfcanada.libsyn.com/2020

After Listening to the podcast “”Species at Risk and climate refuges”  0 sec through to 23:00 minutes please answer the following:

A. How are these three terms similar?  and How are these three terms Different?:

  1. Special concern,  2. Threatened species, and  3. Endangered Species.

B. What are some major forces that threaten species?

C. What are “climate refuges”?

D. What other conservation  practices are happening to protect the wildlife areas for various species?

E. What is a “carbon sink”?  How is it related to animals at risk?

PART 2:     Due tomorrow  Please bring your research information to class with you this week.

Select a special concern, threatened, or endangered animal that you would like sculpt.

You can go to “Species at risk Canada” on the internet to find a huge list of at risk creatures that live here in Canada.

Endangered and threatened species are listed on this page:

https://laws.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/S-15.3/page-18.html#h-43631

and Special concern species are listed here:

https://laws.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/S-15.3/page-19.html#docCont

Choose the animal that you want to sculpt from either of those lists.

You need to find out about this animal.  Please research about the animal and , in your sketchbook answer all of the following questions about it:

***RECORD THE SOURCES OF YOUR RESEARCH FINDINGS***

  1. Find a Canadian animal that is endangered, threatened, or extinct that you would like to learn more about and make a sculpture of.
  1. What is it’s Name and It’s scientific name?
  1. Write a physical description of the animal.
  1. Describe its habitat.
  1. What is the estimated population of the species?
  1. What does this species contribute to the world/food chain/habitat?
  1. What are the things that threaten its survival, or cause it to be endangered? (good research will inform you of this).
  1. What could stop one or more of the dangers that threaten its survival? (you will need to do some thinking here)
  1. Should we care that species are endangered? Why?

Your Research work is worth 10 marks

PART 3:   Due Monday/Tuesday next week

Draw a model sheet of the animal you have selected to sculpt. * Be sure to draw the animal IN THE POSE THAT YOU WILL SCULPT IT IN!! *

  • You will need to draw it from the front, the back, the side, and 3/4 view.  You will need to research the animal on the internet “images”.  Use  the terms “front view”, “side view”, “back view” and  “3/4 view” in your searches.  The images that you find are “references” for your model sheet drawings.
  • Be sure that:  1. You draw the animal in the same body pose in all FOUR drawings, 2.  you use horizontal guidelines through all FOUR drawings to ensure that each body part is the same size in all of the drawings;   and 3. be sure to draw all FOUR drawings in one row.

Your Model sheet is worth 10 marks

PART 4:  We will start sculpting this next week (Oct. 5-9)

Sculpt the animal out of clay.

  • The animal figure needs to be hollow.
  • It will need to be as realistic as possible.
  • The pose that your species is in is important structurally – how can it be a stable sculpture and not fall over?
  • It should be about 12″ tall (or wide)
  • STEP 1:   You will need to include some of the species habitat features around it, probably on the base.  Making the base is the first step in producing this sculpture assignment.
  • STEP 2: Sculpt the head – Here is a good instructional video to begin with on how to sculpt the head:    https://www.lawndalehs.org/apps/video/watch.jsp?v=182811

STEP 3 :  Sculpt the animal’s body.  This is the major portion of the sculpture and It occupies the most amount of space. Join the head to the base with the body.  This video shows a sculptor making a cat sculpture.  He cuts the sculpture in half, hollows it out, and then puts it back together again.  This is an excellent approach:

A different approach to sculpting the body can be seen in the next video.  In this video the sculptor makes the animal hollow from the beginning so does not have to hollow it later.  You might choose this approach instead of the first:

Whichever approach you use you need to make your sculpture hollow!
