DA Reflections

Article 1:

Lots of people that are on the internet may believe everything that they see that is on the internet. When someone spreads rumors about other people, a lot will believe them, just because they read it. Social media can be very powerful and dangerous toward youth. Some fake accounts target people, and make them look like bad people. If you leak personal information, your Identity may be stolen, and bad things can come from it.

Article 2:

People should be aware of what they read of what they see on the internet. Fake post came up of missing children, who aren’t actually missing draw attention to the person who posted this knowledge. Doing this is disrespectful to the families who have gone through something terrible. Pictures are stolen from other people and used for their benefit. We should all be carful of what we see on the internet.

2017 Data analysis thoughts

1.What role do statistics play in our society?

Statistics play a very important role in our society today. We use statistics for a lot of the things that we do in the modern world. We use them to find out everyone’s thoughts and common ideas through statistics. Statistics are used to let everyone have a say, and their voices to be heard. Common people contribute to the data being put forward, for a trustworthy step in broadcasting the data. Using Statistics, you can calculate data, that helps the common goal, benefiting the majority. Statistics show the majority of peoples opinions, while using them, and ways to improve our environment.

2. Explain anything new that you learnt from the article

When we see the Statistics on the news, they broadcast the most interesting, and that might get viewed more, opposed to Statistics have a wide variety of uses and the common ones. They use these to try to get the most views on the stories. You could also use statistics for personal causes and even ways to decide how you can live your life. Using statistics, you can Decide the general Idea’s, and what have happened in the past, and ways to prevent it happening in the future. Statistics can be very misleading and have a bias towards one side.

3. Problems with statistics.

When you read statistics you should never assume that all the info is true. When people gather statistics being use, the data that they collect may not always be correct. When you use incorrect data, you use the wrong statistics, and you may not get the results that you wish for. Sometimes, the people that produce the data may be recording on a certain side of the information, trying to get their side to win, so they may use incorrect numbers so they could prove themselves right. They may have a bias towards one side. Statistic that you use, may not be the correct statistics you use, or may not have the correct set of circumstances. Some wording of questions may also result in a certain direction of the statistics being recorded. The location where they record the data may also have a bias when using the statistics. On statistics, the percentage being used could also result with misleading information. Using different percentages, it could be recorded either a lot more, or a lot less. People may ask only 10 people and 20% say yes, while other may ask a lot more but only get 10% saying yes. The language that they use in the question may also be inaccurate. There may be wording in the question that could persuade you to choose a certain side. When looking for statistics, gather information from as many data bases as possible.

The Friday Everything Changed Questions.

  1. Why are the boys so upset about the girls carrying the water bucket?

Carrying the water bucket in this story represents strength and power. The boys want to be strong and powerful people and look for the importance in being that strong person. They don’t want the girls to break that power they had. They got to leave the school house, and sneak into the store, and do something “real”

  1. What strategies do the boys use to pressure the girls into giving in? How do the girls react?

The boys use violence to try to pressure the girls to give in. They bully them, threaten them, and tease them. They also try to kick them out of the things they love like softball. The girls realize that they need them as fielders, so they were patient on coming back in, realizing their power. Alma’s cousin tries to get her out of carrying, the water, but she thinks they need someone to stick together. The girls react by becoming stronger and becoming closer with each other to try to fight back.

  1. Who is telling the story? What does she think of Ms. Ralston and the conflict over the water? From what point of view is the story told?

The story is told by one of the background girls and alma’s seatmate.  She thinks Ms. Ralston doesn’t know what is going on between the two groups. When the teacher comes in and hits the ball out of the park, they are hopeful that they might be able to make a change in the system. The point of view is limited omniscient. The story is told from a character who doesn’t have a main character roll in the story and we still have access to her thoughts.

  1. What is the setting? How does the setting intensify the conflict? What kind of conflict is it?

The setting in in an old one room school house. The school house is near a railroad station that is used to get the water. The live-in Ontario, because of the maple leaves hockey team, and the mood is frustrated at first but hopeful as the plot changes, with determination. Since they live in an old town, in other towns the girls can do a lot more like the boys do, so the girls know what they might get if they fight for it, making them fight harder. Ms. Ralston also knows what it is like in the big cities because she is from there. This could be a person vs society conflict.

  1. Who is the protagonist? How do you know?

The protagonist in this story is Alma Niles. She was the bold one who asked for the water bucket for girls to carry and forced the changed. Alma was also the one to do all the talking and who got picked on most by the boys.

  1. In what way, did everything change on that Friday? What is the significance of what Ms. Ralston did in the last paragraph? What is the message the author is exploring?

On that Friday where everything changed, the boys and girls have more equality and power. They have more strength together from all the actions leading up to the change. The boys now don’t have power over the water, and can’t brag about the privilege and strength that they have. When Ms. Ralston hits the ball out of the park, it showed the boys that girls can play baseball too, and be just as good and just as strong. Girls are just as capable as boys.

Weekend Poetry Assignment

On Saturday February 4 2017, I woke up early to go to a dive meet. It way snowing, so it took quite a bit of time to get there. I was Diving on the 3 meter, so I started with open practice. I got 1st in my event, and got home at 3:00.

I shoveled snow for a portion of the day, and watched some TV and did some homework.

On Sunday, I woke up early at 6:00am, to go to day 2 of the dive meet. When we got there I went to open practice to practice all of my dives. About half way through the competition, was my event, and I got 2nd place out of 10 people.

Coming home, I read a bit, and had a bath. After cleaning the kitchen, my family and I ate a dinner of appetizers, while watching the Super bowl.

It was snowing, so I went outside to walk my dog. We brought him around the block, and stopped to go sledding down a big hill near our house.

The snow was as light as a feather

Flakes sprinkled on my nose

Although some may dislike this weather

I will always love a frozen rose

I slip my cozy snow-pants on

The heat inside is like a desert

I step outside and all the heat is gone

So cold, I pile on another sweatshirt.

The slush squashes under my feet

Soft sparkly sprinkles of snow stain the  hill

I take out my sled, all nice and neat

Racing down the crisp snowy hill

When our world gets blessed with fresh fallen snow

My gloves will scream yes to go out, that I know

.        When the wind is in my hair, and sand in between my toes, I know Hawaii is the place to be. Starting by packing the bags, I smell the fresh clothe coming out of the dryer, into the suitcase being kept in the corner, for a day longer than it should. I stuff so many clothe into the bag, that all you can see is the fabric sticking out the sides. The whole family is packed; so next we drive to the airport. Waiting through customs takes a long time, and it is finally time to board the plane. The engine rumbled under our seats as it gets ready for takeoff, and were up into the sky. Off to Hawaii we go. Stepping off the plane, all we can feel is the warmth of the air against our skin, from being used to the cold rainy Vancouver weather. The Hotels there are clean, and beautiful, getting ready for the beach. I run to the water as the hot sand pierces the bottoms of my feet. The ocean water is much warmer than the Vancouver water, but a nice refresher against my hot skin. When you put on your snorkel mask, I can see all the fish on the see floor, and there bubbles tickle against my skin. After the ocean, you also have to go to the pool. Being naturally heated, it’s hot, and refreshing at the same time. I could swim in there for hours. It is always warm here in Hawaii. Never wearing a jacket, and sitting outside in restaurants, it is a truly great place to be. The anticipation, long beaches, and hot weather, all make Hawaii a fantastic place to travel.

.          Out of all of the sports I have played, spring board diving is the most exciting of them all. You start by doing some dryland work. For every sport you need to be fit, so training is key. Getting on the mats, we do some core workouts like using our abs to suspend our legs slightly above the mats. V-snaps, planks, pushups, chin-ups and stair running is all a part of the daily training that we do for diving. Alongside the workouts, we do front flips and backflips onto mats, and workout on the trampoline. As fun as some of these may sound, once we are done, your whole body aches, and I can feel the sweat dripping down my face. When we are not training, we are diving in the water. When I first jump I get engulfed in the cold water, wanting to warm up under a towel. Nothing hurts more than when you kick out at the wrong time, and belly-flop into the water. Your whole body is red, and stings at the touch. However, nothings will feel better than when you finally do the dive perfectly and the water rushes past you as you enter the water. People clap when I come out of the water, just like they do when I learn a new dive. Once my dives are perfected, I can go to competition, to compete against team mates, and showcase what I have learned so far. We get scored on a scale of 1 – 10, 10 being best. There is nothing better, than coming out of the water and hearing screams from everyone around you, congratulating your dive, and the judges giving you high scores. From Training, practice, then competitions, diving is an amazing and exciting sport.

.        My dog is the best dog in the world. When I was 8 years old, we got my dog while coming home from vacation, naming him copper. From that moment on, we knew that he would be the best dog ever. Copper is a golden retriever. He has what we hall “hippy hair” and, a black nose, that turns pink in the winter months. He has round oval eyes that always look sad, making you want to pet him all the time. He has bad dog breath that smells like rotten eggs sometimes, and a personality like a “surfer dude.” Sometimes he may do stupid things, but that makes him all the better. When we take Copper for walks, he heels nicely at my Dad’s side, and is always friendly to the other dogs that walk by, except when my Dad had a ball. When anyone has a ball, that is all Copper will pay attention to, and he’ll do anything to get. When my dog is at home, he stays quite most of the time, and when he does have to do any business, he does it in my sister’s room, so it is alright. He will always play games with you and will do just about anything to get his treat. Copper is always happy, fun to play with, and has a great personality, and is the best dog anyone could ever ask for.
