Surface Area of a circle – Orange activity

For this activity, the goal was to find a formula for the surface area of an orange. First, we took the orange and cut it in half. That give us a circumference of the orange. We then traced it onto a big piece of paper as many times as we could. Then, we peeled the orange and took small bits of the peel to fill the circles as many times as we could. We could fit the orange peels into 4 full circles.

The formula we came up with was 4π
