A Place at the Table Response

1)One case of food insecurity was Barbie and her family. She was a single mother with two kids and was using food stamps, her kids didn’t have much but they always had food. She was never worried whether her kids would get to eat she just had to stretch it out. Her youngest, a boy, has an immune deficiency specifically, G6PD, he has hearing problems, and a speech delay. He has developed these problems because his mom is unable to properly feed him, despite her countless efforts. Towards the end, she managed to get a job but the job made it so she didn’t qualify for food stamps or subsidized child care. Which, causes her to worry about whether her kids will be able to eat because now she can barely afford food, if she can afford food.

Another case is when a father, Joel, who worked as a rancher, of two kids had to take up a second job cleaning a school, while his wife worked an hour away from home so the family could make ends meat. Their two kids go to Pastor Bob’s after-school program, Kids Cafe because the parents are at work. The kids get fed a hot meal after-school which helps Joel and his wife with feeding the kids, as well as, them having a place to hang out after school.

2)My reaction to this movie was more personal. I was raised by a single mother and times would get hard, she worked up to I believe 5 jobs at one time, which sometimes still wouldn’t be enough money. So when we needed to we did utilize food banks and government assistance. I remember my mother hating to do this because it feels degrading, but she loved us enough to swallow her pride, and use them. I knew we had problems with money at around the age of 7, so I was even constantly worried about whether we would get to eat. I remember that I would countlessly offer to give up my birthday and Christmases to make sure we get food for dinner. I remember my mom time and time again not to worry about it, but that didn’t stop me, my whole life I worried about my family’s finances, I still do. So, I didn’t really think it was just people in a far away country who dealt with food problems, because my family did. What surprised me was how many families struggled. In my school, I was the only one in my friends who struggled, everyone else had both parents, a nice house, and wasn’t struggling, but I was. This was a little embarrassing and I was worried I would be judged, I still am, but I wouldn’t change what happened either. Seeing the video and seeing that there are so many people struggling greatly surprised me and makes me wish that there was a way to fix this whole problem, because the issue is a horrible one that should be fixed as soon as possible, but the governments aren’t trying.

3)I think I would make it so most of the money doesn’t go to corporations who sell junk food, but instead the money goes to actual family farmers and fresh fruit and vegetables. That way the rate of childhood obesity would go down and nutrition levels would increase, because children would be getting actual proper food, since the parents would buy healthy foods instead of chips, pop, and other junk food. I would also change the policy that makes it so if you’re above a certain household income then you no longer get subsidies or other help. People have to start managing there money, but in a very wrong way. People have to decide to either make less money so they get the subsidies and help they need, or make as much money as they can but not get the help they need, and then struggle so much more, financially. This isn’t right because the country are trying to help poor people, but once they are above a certain income they don’t get the help anymore, even if the income they earn isn’t enough to live on. I would change the policy, so it’s not a blanket policy instead it would be a case by case basis, and the policy would help the person or family, until they don’t need the help.
