Safety Story

September 10th, 2019                Safety Story

Today is our very first lab, and I’m not gonna lie i am pretty excited, these past few days we have been learning about our safety around the Lab, what to do and what not to do, now our time has come and we have to our brain and skills and make them work together as one. For this lab class we will be using Hydrogen Peroxide Liquid. (Hydrogen Peroxide is basically water but with a little bit of oxygen but get confused) first we need to grab ourselves a Safety Goggles and we need to get our supplies for this experiment we will be needing a: Erlenmeyer Flask for our H2O2, 1 tablespoon for our yeast, 3+ tablespoons for our warm water, liquid dish washing soap, a food colouring, a small cup, a funnel, and last but not least 2 safety Goggles for you and your lab partner. and we can. Now we will be pouring our 1/2 cup of H2O2 with a funnel into a Erlenmeyer flask, now we will be adding about 10 drops of your favourite food colouring into the Erlenmeyer flask, add 1 tablespoon of liquid dish washing soap into the Erlenmeyer flask and swish around for a little bit to mix it, now this is the part where we use the Small cup, in the small cup we will be adding the warm water and yeast for at least 30 seconds to mix it, it should about a consistency of melted ice cream (add a little bit of warm water if needed) now the fun part starts! use the funnel to pour the warm water and yeast mixture into the Erlenmeyer flask and watch it Foam up! now the foam is tiny foam bubble filled with oxygen, the yeast acted like a catalyst, a catalyst is used to speed up reactions. It quickly broke apart the oxygen from the Hydrogen Peroxide. That’s pretty much it, everything is cleaned up everyone is ready to go home and enjoy the rest of the day, we had so much today in science class, bye now!

  1. Thanks for your fictional safety story. You communicated your understanding of a lab in the Science class and included a few pieces of scientific equipment. Your map shows all of the safety features we have except some of the ones outside the class. Make sure you dig deeper into things like your Science ethical dilemma to really consider the advantages and disadvantages of the action.
