Math 10 – Week 5

This week, I learned some new polynomial vocabulary, including what constant, linear, quadratic, cubic, quartic, and quintic polynomials are. I also learned how to find the leading term.

Here are some examples of the different types of polynomials:

Constant polynomial:

A constant polynomial has a degree of 0. It can also just be referred to as a constant.

ex. 3

Linear polynomial:

A linear polynomial has a degree of 1.

ex. 9x-7

Quadratic polynomial:

A quadratic polynomial has a degree of 2.

ex. 10y^2

Cubic polynomial:

A cubic polynomial has a degree of 3.

ex. z^3-5z+8

Quartic polynomial:

A quartic polynomial has a degree of 4.

ex. 6+a^4-4a

Quintic polynomial:

A quintic polynomial has a degree of 5.

12a^2b^3-1+b^2

How to find the leading term:

The leading term is the term in a polynomial with the highest power, and not necessarily the first term in the polynomial. For example: when a^2+7x^5-j^3 , +7x^5 would be the leading term.
