What can one do to find happiness when all is gone?

 In The Watch by Elie Wiesel, the author is a survivor of the Holocaust, therefore he is sad and hopeless, until he finds the watch, which is a symbol for hope that not all has been lost in the war.  In times of hopelessness, it can be helpful to find happiness in memories, and past experiences.  It can help by reassuring yourself that you’ve made it this far, and it can help you keep going in times of sadness.  In the story, the author says, “Could this thing, this object, be my gift? My pride? My past?” (page 4) Which symbolizes that he’s questioning the watch, and what it stands for.   the watch.
