Discussion 2: connector: when the Jews were in a train car, it makes me think of malls and of all the people and how Closter phobic it makes me feel.

When the woman was going through a mental break down she would scream “Fire! I see a Fire! I see a Fire”. It made me a little anxious reading that because it made me think of like a horror movie of someone almost being possessed.

Discussion 3: literary laminator:      “we were brought some soup, one bowl of thick soup for each of us. I was terribly hungry, yet I refused to touch it.”

– this shows us the difference from now in the novel to future in the novel. Right now he is still the spoiled rich kid he was, nut soon he will learn that he has to eat to survive and will literally eat anything.

Elie said “yes, my mother did hear from them. Reizel is fine. So are the children”

Elie had not heard anything, but he decided that the most important thing in the concentration camp was hope, so Elie gave Stein hope.

Discussion 4: summarizer: first the Jews are forced to watch some hangings of their own peoples, then many of them were moved into different groups. It was selection time, all of the Jews were very frightened because if they were selected they would be sent to the chimney, in the end neither Elie or his father were selected, however Elie was moved to the very hard labour group and it sucked.

Discussion 5: researcher:

The Jews were forced to walk atleast 20km in the freezing cold knee high snow, and then were stuffed in a train car, where many died.

At least 3,000 prisoners died on the Gleiwitz route alone. Approximately 9,000-15,000 prisoners in total died on death marches out of Auschwitz’s camps, and those who did survive were then put on freight trains and shipped to other camps deeper in German held territory.

in every one of these train cars there were 100 prisoners.

Discussion 6: illustrator: Ellie no longer recognizes himself.

He was not justified

Imagine, walking into the grocery store, being petrified of your environment. Imagine, being so nervous that your heart was pounding at 100 beats per minute. Imagine having to hide your possessions deep in your pockets because you don’t know what is going to happen. Imagine, feeling a sense of relief because of the man with a badge, you reach for your wallet. Imagine getting killed because of someone who is supposed to protect. In the short story, identities, by WD Valgardson, the protagonist is portrayed as a wealthy middle-class man, who needs to go to the grocery store. However, the antagonist, who was the police officer wrongfully shot the protagonist. It is a police officer officers’ job to protect innocent people from violence, and harm. A police officer needs to be sure he is doing the right thing before acting. First off, the police officer was inexperienced with his training, and did not know what he was doing. What the police officer should have done is wait to see what the man was reaching for, instead of assuming the worst. Secondly, the man felt a sense of relief and security as he saw the police officer, however the police officer was just as frightened as the man had been. “When he turned part way around and recognizes the uniform, he does not feel fear but relief”. In this passage of the short story it shows that the man is calm and not agitated in any way, therefore the man was zero threat to the police officer. Thirdly, the police officer didn’t give any notice that he was going to shoot. A normal police officer would have given the man a chance by telling him to put his hands up or get on the ground. The officer could have even used a taser if he felt threatened enough. Finally, shooting someone with no evidence that they did a crime, and taking their life cannot be justified, even if the inexperienced cop was scared of his surroundings.

beatty’s lecture

In the current state of society, the government has made books illegal, and fire fighters destroy the books, and can even kill. Beatty thinks that books can make people unhappy, and he does not feel guilt or remorse. Beatty says “Not everyone is born free and equal, as the constitution says, but everyone made equal.” Pg. 55-56. This shows how Beatty is ignorant and content with the society because he understands that people are not equal, but he will not do anything to change the society. Beatty may have also been brainwashed because in the novel it seems like he is very knowledgeable about books, but it really feels like he has no regard for human life. When Beatty was in the house burning the books, he said to the old lady “you know the law”, but what if a law is unjust, henry David Thoreau one famously said, “one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. Burning books gives Beatty a sense of pride, a sense of power. Beatty has changed throughout the novel, first he is known as a destroyer and burner, but now overtime he has started to second guess himself. the reason beatty gives for burning books is because, books are like a gun, if you have knowledge it an be very dangerous towards the government and society. Many people in this dystopia think that they are happy and everyone is either not wanting to, or scared of change. in the novel there is no democracy because without freedom there cannot be democracy.

Garibaldi lake task

Area of base x height

area of base = 9, 940, 000 m^2

height = 119 m^2

VOLUME =  AREA OF BASE X HEIGHT = 1,182,860,000 m^3

Mass = 1 m^3 = 1000kg

Mass = 1,182,860,000 x 1000 = 1, 182, 860, 000, 000 kg of water in the lake.

if the wall broke and the water came out the valley would be completely destroyed and flooded, a Honda Civic is roughly 1000 kg, so imagine 1,182,860,000 Honda civics rolling your way. A elaphant is roughly 6000 kg so imagine 197000 elephants running at you. You have no chance.

House

In the first line it says “it’s a case of retarded devoloptment”, it sets up the initial comflict. Everyone else has a house, and harry also wants a house to be like everyone else. But he later realizes that he doesn’t want to be like everyone else. It shows in the story that being like everyone else is very important and being yourself is good too. When the broke down the walls it symbolizes to me that it got rid of the stress harry had, and how he could tear that down and become kind of original again. I think that harry felt like he wanted to be like other families, but also he wanted the best for his own family. I think it is important that he does, because it shows the love he has for them. It
