The following is an example I created of a monologue and is for the character of Biff from “Death of a Salesman.”
This is a monologue because it is Biff explaining his emotions and his current job situation. He is explaining his trouble with his father and he would say this uninterrupted to someone.
This monologue would fit in the current plot when Biff and Happy were talking to each other late at night during the first act.
Biff: I am a man who was once considered a high achiever, but am now considered along the lines of a disappointment. I have rebounded from job to job, never quite finding something I enjoy. My father wants me to become a salesman like himself, but I would rather work with animals and own a ranch in Texas. He does not like this idea of a ranch, this thought only demoralizes him more and continues to paint my picture of failure in his head. Not only do I not have a stable job with a steady income, but no wife nor children. A man like me, already mid thirties, is well past his prime and based on my current situation, settling down is an impossible dream never to come true. I am not a man, I am simply a sad lonely failure.
