Mount Vesuvius is an active composite volcano located 9 km east of Naples in Italy. The volcano belongs to the campanian volcanic arc and is most famous for its eruption in 79 AD that covered the city of Pompeii however, its last eruption was March 17-23, 1944. Mount Vesuvius has a height of 1, 281 meters and was formed when the African plate was subducted underneath the Eurasian plate. It is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of its violent eruptions and the population of 3 million people nearby.
