Float your boat

Challenge write up

Challenge:

Make a boat with that can float on water and hold the most amount of pennies.

Hypothesis:

If the weight of the pennies are evenly distributed on the the surface of the boat then the boat has a higher chance of holding more pennies because it the weight is evenly balanced then there is no chance of the boat tipping over on one side and dropping all the pennies.

Idea for original design:

For the design of our boat, we cut the straw in the middle by doing that we had more straw to use for the boat. The straw was plastic so it is able to float on water so we used the straw as a flotation device to support the tinfoil. We made a square at the bottom of the tinfoil so just incase the placing of the pennies were to be uneven there would be a back up plan to make sure everything is balanced. On the inside of the boat we made kind of a cross shape to help with flotation. For this project we made sure to learn from out last one. Last time we didn’t win because our base was weak and wasn’t able to support the structure so this time we made sure to think about how we were going to use the supplies without wasting them. By having a stable base we were able to carry more pennies than everyone else.

how many pennies did your boat hold?

Our boat was able to old 98 pennies. The Big Chungus held the most amount of pennies in the entire class . I think it was able to hold so many pennies because of the structure and stability of the boat.

WHAT WOULD YOU KEEP OR CHANGE ON YOUR BOAT DESIGN IF YOU WERE TO DO THIS AGAIN?

I don’t think I would change anything. I would probably keep everything the same because of how well everything worked-out.
