proposal

1) Create a proposal for a local place to focus on for the project (school, community, neighbourhood, public building, store, etc.)
Coquitlam Centre station
· Why did you choose this place?
Because there are a lot of cars in parking area and people transit to skytrain or west coast express
· Describe the place/region. What makes it unique/ how is this place defined?
People head to their workplace, especially in downtown would use trains.
People from outside of tri-city (Maple ridge, Pitt Medows) also use this station.
Ever Green extension was opened in 2016 so that this transit system would have changed recent resident’s life style.
Bus station is also attached to Coquitlam Central station.
· Brainstorm ways in which you expect this place to contribute GHGs to the atmosphere. (Direct or indirect?)
-Ask questions to people who use train/bus
How long do you use train?
How did you get here? (If car, ask how many kilometers do they drive in a day)
Before the extension was built, which transportation did you use and how long did they use.
Research CO2 emission from westcoast express, skytrain and translink bus.
· What data would you observe/measure to figure out the place’s contributions of GHGs? (not something you Google to find) What is your timeframe?
CO2 emission from westcoast express, skytrain and translink bus.
Number of cars in parking lot.
Number of trains, bus in a day.
Estimated CO2 emission if the extension hadn’t been built.
· Who would you need to contact to complete your research? (Permissions? Utilities?)
Get permission from people if it’s okay to use their information to make presentation.
Ask Translink about the specs of train and buses.
Ask question randomly.

· What groups/sources already exist that you could get assistance from?
I can get information how many trains and buses run in a day from schedule.
Average CO2 emission of cars.

Geography12 survey

I will conduct survey about energy; especially, fossil fuel.

At the intersection of Shaughnessy avenue and Kingsway avenue, I’ll count the number of cars passing through for 30 minutes.

The reason why I conduct this survey there is except for highways, almost all car have to pass along those roads to enter to or exit from Port Coquitlam.

From data collected by the survey, I’ll estimate a daily traffic volume. I also need to find the average fuel efficiency of cars.

For second step, I’ll ask a question about how long do people drive in a day for about 15 local residents. That gives the average distance of people in Port Coquitlam drive in a day.

At the end, I’ll get the estimated volume of fossil fuel consumed by cars in our city.

(Daily traffic volume)×(Average distance)÷(Average fuel efficiency)=Estimated volume of fuels consumed by cars←Place to conduct a survey

The species that I should avoid: Eels
I used to eat eels in summer since Japan has a tradition to eat it to gain energy for severe summer. As the website shows, all listed methods to harvest eels haven’t been certified by ocean wise. Especially, European eel and Japanese eel are listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List.
For this reason, basically, almost all eels are produced by farming. The reason why ocean wise hasn’t certified farming is lack of availability in data. So, few records about how many species of eels being farmed, production volume and trade route are monitored. In addition, there is a controversy in the way of farming. Farming system requires moderate amount of fish to feed eels and overpopulated condition often causes outbreaks of diseases. Diseases can affect to wild life species due to the open nature of the farms.
The species that I should consume: Pink salmon
This website shows 7options out of 10 are certified by ocean wise. This fish can be harvested near Vancouver and the area is in the 7option. Instead of consuming Tuna which is significantly decreased its number by overfishing, we can have pink salmon as one of substitution.
How sustainable aquaculture is?
The video shows us that salmon aquaculture can be quite deadly to the environment. Here in BC, wild salmon is significant nutrient source for wildlife, and its reduction directly affect to the animal’s life in the coast.
Since we only consume fish which we raise, to harvest fish by farming them seems friendly to the environment and sustainable, however, there are serious impacts on the environment. The system requires some amount of fish to feed product fish. In addition, as the video reveals, farms are hot bed of diseases since fish are in concentrated and dirty condition.
The video implies the outbreaks of diseases can affect to wild salmon and that should be the reason for decrease the number of wild salmon. The video shows some convincing evidence, such as, the fact salmon reduction began at the year farms opened and a deadly virus was detected from both firm salmon and wild salmon. Therefore, if we continue salmon faming in open nature environment, we damage wild salmon and wildlife that nutrient source is consisted by salmon.
For this reason, conventional way of farming salmon isn’t very sustainable.

Benefits of Clearcutting & Silviculture:
-Able to collect uniform crops.
-The simplest and easiest way to log trees therefore most efficient.
-Tend to be the cheapest option.
-The equipment for clearcutting is common so that it is easy to prepare tools.
-Less damage for the next generation of forest since all trees are extracted.
-The recovery of forest may be the most raid when combined with
plantation forestry techniques and fast-growing shade-intolerant species.
-May be the good way to control insect and disease to cut down all trees.
-Since almost all roots are removed, it’s become easier to ameliorate soil.
-It’s safer for worker because most or all trees are extracted.
Drawbacks of Clearcutting & Silviculture:
-Even though trees are planted after the extraction, sometimes, clearcutting is negatively perceived as being systems that fight against nature.
-Wildlife species can lose their habitat.
-Since all roots and trees are extracted, some soil expose site of erosion.
-In some field, the reestablishment of trees are very difficult.
-During the process, we can cut down the trees which is too precious for the crops; very aged trees.
-Often considered as the example of human’s destruction of nature.
Benefits of selective logging
-Relatively low effect on wildlife species.
-This method helps forest to build up the resistance to diseases and pests.
-Regeneration of trees is faster.
-Prevent more wildfires and minimize soil erosion by cutting down fewer trees.
Drawbacks of selective logging
-Expensive and time-consuming way.
-In some cases, regeneration from clearcutting is faster than selective logging one.
-Genetically-superior trees are extracted; they have significant role to keep forest healthy.

How sustainable is BC’s Forestry Industry?

-The long history of BC’s forestry implies us that it is quite sustainable. However, we’ve cut down primeval forest which had grown for thousands years,  and we won’t be able to restore it.  Therefore, in terms of the forestry in natural forest isn’t sustainable at all. On the other hand, forestry in artificial forests seems somewhat sustainable. Especially, in clearcutting, environment get severe damage which makes the forestry less sustainable.

What would an ethic of care towards the environment look like?

1.How do you personally define an ethic of care?

-Ethic of care is different from the justice. Kind of work happen in particular relationships.

-Various of actions to maintain, contain and repair the ‘world’.   ‘World’ can be our body, ourselves and the environment.

-The care requires attentiveness, responsibility, competence and responsiveness to carry out.

2,What would be needed to create an ethic of care?

-Attentiveness: Be careful to notice the need of help.

-Responsibility: Have to persist in caring someone.

-Competence: The capability of providing sufficient quality of care.

-Responsiveness: To understand the position of people who receive care and improve one’s action.

3,What would we have to believe about the environment to care for it? How should we see it?

We need to assume that the environment need to be restored by human and that requires a long time and tons of effort to us.

The nature has been too damaged to be recovered by itself; demand care from other part.

4,How would we act if we cared about the environment?

The scenario: Climate change

First of all, we need to know what should we do to care the environment. Then, make determination to deal with the issue and be responsible for our care. Finally, think what would be effective actions and review our activity to improve the next one.

5,What would be different about the world if everyone adopted this ethic of care towards the environment? Benefits and drawbacks?

-Certainly, we would be more aware of the environment and take more actions to save it. However, it’s possible to get the late of  development in the industry and technology, since we would choose more eco-friendly way which is not always the most efficient way.

6,Should we adopt an ethic of care towards the environment?

I think so. We should be more aware of what happening in environment and that need to be stopped.

If we destroyed nature completely, we wouldn’t able to live. Taking care of nature means taking care of ourselves.
