PicLit Poetry Assignment

Poetry is often something that I like doing because I can get my feelings out without being completely direct, I can just leave little hints and clues here and there to express myself. For this assignment, I chose this picture because it spoke to me the most due to the illustration of the lightning and stormy weather. Ever since I was little, I associated the feeling of caring about someone to the weather lightning and thunder and that’s why before I learned to say “I love you” to the important people in my life I would say “I have the sparks for you”. That’s the memory that came into my mind when I saw this picture and it inspired me to write this poem.

I always try to write stuff that represents significant moments in my life and that’s kind of what I tried to do here. I pictured thunder to be like the sound of laughter and that lightning can dance across the sky . From there, I continued on to write more lines. I really wanted to focus on imagery and use hyperbole in my poem to exaggerate the plot. There are so many interesting ways to describe and explain the weather, everyone has a unique way to connect it to their lives. Lightning and thunder for me represent the rawest example of life, hence the meaning behind my poem being about having a free spirit and sharing that quality with someone.
