Shakespeare – Graphic Novel

I decided to do my graphic novel about Act 4, scene 1 of the play because I felt like I connected with it the most and it was so funny to me. The scene starts with Titania and Bottom who are near the four Athenian teens. Once they sleep, Oberon sneaks up on them with Puck and reverses the spell on Titania and tells Puck to do the same to Bottom because Titania agreed to give him the Indian child. Titania is disgusted that she ever loved Bottom. Before morning comes, the fairies return, leaving Bottom and four teens there, thinking they are dreaming. Hippolyta, Theseus, and Egeus are cruising the woods near by to observe May Day rights when they notice the four teens. They wake them up and Lysander explains how he and Hermia were going to run away. Demetrius also explains why he followed them and how he only loves Helena and not Hermia. They then go on to talk about what they think happened the night before but they all barely remember anything. The scene ends with Bottom waking up and coming up with the idea of a ballad to represent his dream.

At first, when I read the play I was confused because the language was still new to me, the translation did help but I still didn’t understand everything as clearly as I would’ve if I was reading a normal book. Slowly, it got better and I started to really enjoy the play. It’s really funny once you understand what’s going on. “A midsummer night’s dream” taught me a lot of things about love and true love and how not everything is always as it seems. I enjoyed how Shakespeare played around with the idea of loving someone when you first see them because of what they look like and then later on, seeing that they’re not attractive and not loving them anymore, it’s really silly. Overall, I really enjoyed the play and I learned a lot from it, even though at times it was a bit crazy what with this person being in love with that person and the other person not loving them back and so forth, it was still really entertaining and joyful to read the play and do this project!! I totally suggest you either read or watch this play on YouTube, it’s one of my favourites!!

  1. Thank you for posting your “Graphic Novel” project taking one source of writing (literature) and transferring it into a new piece of media using your creative perspective. Below are some observations about your post:

    – Excellent use of the software (Pixton) to retell the story
    – Looks like a professional graphic novel
    – You embedded this properly on your Edublog

Overall, I think you did an outstanding job with the technology!
