Rube Goldberg Machine Project – Light Out

The name of my machine is called Light Out, its purpose is to turn light off.

Picture of the machine:

Machine Explanation:

Thermal energy → Gravitational energy → Electrical energy → Elastic energy → Mechanical energy → Mechanical energy

Step A: To start the machine, use a lighter to light a fire. The fire will then burn and cut off the thread between the card board and the ball.

Thermal energy – The molecules of the fire are very excited (vibrating), when the fire touches the thread, the excited molecules of fire will also excited the one next to them. In this case, fire excited the molecules of the thread. The molecules of the thread vibrate so much that it breaks apart the bonds that hold them together and are turned into volatile gases.

Step B: As the thread break off, the ball roll down the ramp.

Gravitational energy – There are gravitational potential energy in the ball, when the ball is on top of the ramp which is above the surface, gravity of earth tries to pull the ball back to the surface. But because of the thread, the energy of the ball had been restrained. Once the thread breaks off, the energy of the ball will continue to convert its. potential energy to kinetic energy.

Step C: The force of the ball rolling down the ramp pushes the ball toward the hair dryer, the hair dryer blows air and pushes the ball toward the elastic band.

Electrical energy – The hair dryer is plug into the socket, the energy of electrons provide power to the hair dyer, enable the hair dryer to blow air.

Step D: The ball hit the elastic band, the elastic band bounces the ball to the tiles.

Elastic energy – The potential energy that can be stretch or compressed was stored in the elastic band. As the ball hits the elastic band, the elastic energy stretches the elastic band and bounces the ball away.

Step E: When the ball hits the very first tile, the tile will fall one on one on other tiles like a chain reaction, eventually the last tile will hit the tin can.

Mechanical energy – The rolling ball transfers its mechanical energy to the tiles causing the tiles to move their position.

Step F: The tin can hits the Kendama Toy and turns off the light.

Mechanical energy – The mechanical energy of the moving tiles convert its energy to the Kendama Toy, causing the Kendama Toy to move and hits the light switch which closed the light.
