Theme Statement: Accepting the fact that you are lost can help you discover a new identity and help you on your journey to find it.

In the Whirligig, main character Brent Bishop experiences many things. Brent has just moved to Chicago and had decided to go to a party to win over the girl he was crushing on at school; Brianna. She pushes Brent off the edge by embrasssing him in front of the whole party, telling him to back off which triggers Brent’s anger, let alone the fact that he’d already downed a few alcoholic beverages. Brent then decides to drive home… whilst driving Brent has some sucicidal thoughts… taking his hands off the wheel trying to kill himself, he hits an innocent teen; Lea, killing her.

His ‘punishment’ is to make four whirligigs in hounour of Lea, to keep her spirit alive and pin them up in the four corners of the U.S. Brent decides that his new life started after the crash, he wants to start fresh… but has no idea how to, as revealed on p. 43 “He was lodged in his own chrysalis, but had no idea what he was turning into” Brent is transforming from one form to another – one life to another. He can’t discover who he truly is but he is trying to. This relates to my theme statement “Accepting the fact that you are lost can help you discover a new identity and help you on your journey to find it.” Maybe Brent needs to accept the fact that he’s lost and open up to new ideas in which will help him build a new life for himself, look around him and see the world. This ties in to the EQ question “Why are we afraid of change?” Brent is scared, he had just killed someone, it’s going to be hard for him to accept that and get on with his life, he’s scared to let it all go.

  1. Hanna – It’s interesting that you chose the theme of identity to connect to your EQ – which is a good one!
