Three Things Why I Never Want Jack As a Boyfriend

Jack plays an important role in novel “Lord of the flies”, he even became the chief of the group and got adored while his personifications does not deserve the title.

  • Lack of the ability of self-knowledge and self- examination 🙁

“I ought to be chief,”   “because I’m chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp.”  During the election, it’s dumb of Jack to think he could be leader because he could sing C sharp. Singing would never be the standard to evaluate someone who’s capable enough of being a leader or not. Clearly, what Jack said was exactly an act of mature. All girls wish to have a boyfriend who is humble, energetic and positive. You have to know who you are. Your advantages, your disadvantages, your strength, your weakness, your opportunities and so on. Then you will have a complete realization for yourself. For Jack this kind of people what he lacks is the ability to have a self-examination for himself so he does not his shortcoming and forte of him of being the leader.

  • Boring and tasteless relationship 🙁

In chapter three, Ralph was having an argument with Jack. He asked Jack to do some contribution but all Jack want was hunting. According to that, readers can see how boring Jack was. Wondering about this, if you are in relationship with someone, you wish days with him were memorable and make every moment count, however what your boyfriend got in his hand was only games, games and games like Jack only cares about hunting, hunting and hunting. He never prepares you a gift or surprise you on your anniversary, he does not like having to be responsible for the relationship, for himself, and for you. He doesn’t say this, but we can see it by how he acts.

  • Arrogant 🙁

Jack’s most deadly killing part of personality would be arrogant. He never shows his patience to littileluns and treated pigs rudely. When the boy was a birthmark on his face first mentioned there was a beast on the island, Jack did not choose to deny but he admitted indirectly. He wanted to prove to the boys that he was brave and was not afraid of the beast at all.  Jack’s speech seems like a promise to the boys but was more like a destruction to their hope.

A boyfriend who is boring, lives a tasteless life; who is negative and always overconfident; who is arrogant and impatient to others, next step definitely would be game over, and break up.

Which source best explores the questions: What is the meaning of life?

Many people may face a question that has been asked since they were little babies: What do you think is the meaning of life? Dead Poets Society is a 1989 American drama film directed by Peter Weir, written by Tom Schulman.Set in 1959 at the fictional elite conservative Vermont boarding school Welton Academy. “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” written by James Thurber is a short story which took place in Waterbury, Connecticut. Although both sources answer the question, “What’s the meaning of life?” Mitty has a negative tone whereas Dead Poets portrays a positive attitude. Regardless of the difference, both show that we should seize the day in order to be happy.

Carpe Diem. In Dead Poets Society, when the boys first went to Mr. Keating’s poetry class, things start to shake up a bit. Mr. Keating got the class to leave the room and observe the pictures of alumni that line the hallways. He leaned to the boys and whispered to them, (Schulman) Mr. Keating used this quote to inspire them, they are the members of the human race, all the passion and excitement for life they share is what makes them special and unique. Mr. Keating encouraged the boys to find their voice and look at things in a different way, just like Neil. Neil is a normal but idealistic student in Welton. He was one the huge fan of Mr. King’s poetry 《 Dead Poets Society》. Neil was looking forward to being free but he got highly trapped in solving the family relationship in reality. He yearned for freedom and wanted to found what he was living for. He decided to be an actor and stood in the center of stage in front of the whole school. To achieve his dream, he would rather sacrifice everything, even his life. Nevertheless, Neil’s father’s intimidate was real existed, there was no possibility to neglect it, he lied the process to his father because he was too afraid to be against his parents. To achieve his dream, he would rather sacrifice everything, even his life. Due to《Dead Poets Society》, Neil had found a model for rebellion-Mr. Keating. Although Neil’s character was a tragic example because he misunderstood Mr. Keating’s love of freedom, at least he tried. Before the last seconds of his life, he touched every corner of the crown gently, he knew his death won’t be meaningless because the crown was the evidence that proved him had lived in this world, in everyone’s heart.

Walter Mitty portrayed a negative impact on readers. The story deals with a vague and mild-mannered man who drives into Waterbury, Connecticut, with his wife for their regular weekly shopping and his wife’s visit to the beauty parlor. Walter has a very everyday office job in Life Magazine without any surprise. He lived under his wife’s control and desired freedom. Walter has never done anything significant or adventurous before, and he’s having some problems with his work. He daydreams about having an exciting life, full of fantastic adventures and being a superhero who’s capable of doing anything: “The Old Man’ll get us through, they said to one another, the Old Man ain’t afraid of Hell” (Thurber)  Walter Mitty was not afraid of taking the risk because he was confident about himself, he believed he could get them through the trouble successfully. Walter Mitty was not afraid of death because he knew he was no longer a young man anymore, everyone is going to die, but before death he could fight for himself in the limited time and cherish every minute of his life. That was Mitty’s meaning for life. However, in reality, Mitty’s first motion when facing troubles was escaping. He denied the truth and kept dreaming in his fake fantasty world. He got immersed in dreams that lead to the result of the ending of the story. This has been a common phenomenon in Mitty’s life. He hasn’t live fully to his life and has wasted his past life already. He was not able to distinguish the dream and reality. The book The secret life of Walter Mitty was appealed to old people better than young people.

In conclusion, Dead Poets Society and “The secret life of Walter Mitty” are filled with inspiring moments and quotes, the biggest different from these two sources are the endings. One is to teach students seize the day the other is to warn readers not to escape when solving the problems or they will have the same ending with Walter Mitty. Comparing Dead Poets Society with “The secret life of Walter Mitty”, Dead Poets Society explores what is the meaning of life better. Seizing the day, cherishing every minute of your life and Carpe Diem!

Reflection:

1:Two things I did well: I think one thing would be that my thesis stated how these sources reflect the similarities and differences in the sources clearly and my conclusion wraps up argument strongly.

2:Two thing i need to remember for G12 essay: My grammar still needs to prove much because the tone of my essay was unclear, the other thing  is that when i write intro i should conclude the basic information in the very first paragraph.

English 10

She was a victim of bullying

My sister Jenny is 3 years old younger than me. She has two big, bright and beautiful eyes with oval face and long black curly hair with colorful glasses. All of us are proud of her because she bears the expectations of everyone and entered a famous junior high school with her own efforts.

My sister’s parents bought her a mobile phone for rewarding her of reaching their target as well as encouraging her to study better. Sixteen years old is a girlish age, a beautiful youth. Girls wish to have a very first kiss from their secret boy and dreaming desirably to have an everlasting romantic love story just like Edward and Bella in twilight. So as Jenny.

She had a crush on her classmate and was so terribly tempted wanted to express her felling to him tell him what she thought. The day was Friday afternoon, only half of students were in the classroom after finishing lunch. Jenny went to her seat and pulled her classmate out to a small garden outside the school. Her face brushed like a reddish apple. She prepared a bracing statement for him, she even practiced the dialogue every night before sleep just for making sure they wouldn’t be mistakes. She took courage and told him that she liked him. But the boy refused her because she is not his type. While she was talking, I even could see the tears in her eyes. She is so simple, so innocent that got hurt form her very first love.

Next day she came to class, all of her classmates made fun of her, including her best friend because her classmate told everyone in the class that Jenny expressed to him but he refused her. Her teacher called her to the office, instead of comforting Jenny, her teacher critized her puppy love have leaded to a bad impact on the class. She cried. She told me that she would never forget that cry, her forst cry in junior high school, her first cry in front of the whole class with still a group of classmates bullying her for snubbing her and pushing her out form the classroom. Her best friend came to her place and mocked at her loudly. “How could you be so confident when you decided to express?”  “You are not rich. You are not beautiful. You don’t even have a car at home.” Those phrases loudly spoked by her best friends, while others were peering at her. She ran out of the class and went home.

There is a famous quote said by Phaedrus, ‘things are not always what they seem’. Jenny started to skip classes. Her mother sent her to school everyday by bike. When Jenny entered the gate of the school, she started to be afraid of laughters, she ran as fast as she could to the classroom in order to avoiding others’ sights, she would definitely choose to put on a mask to cover her face if she could. Teacher’s and classmate’s incomprehension and ridicule killed her fantasy of good love. When she was ready to face the class, when she was ready to give a step to herself, she hesitated and hide into the washroom until school ends. She even added a lot strangers to chart to chat and fell in love with one of them. She skyped with him and even hang out with him. Under her parents. She is satisfied with her surroundings, she has a lot of friends in another world behind the mobile phone. She gained happiness and ‘true love’ from her netizens. Her teacher asked her to quit school because she never came and never did homework., her mother even resign her job only for taking care of her daughter because Jenny had suicided once at home, in front of the desk.

Mum took Jenny to see a psychiatrist, the result is that Jenny got Atypical Depression, is much more harder to treat than depression. This Spring Holiday I went back to China to visit her, she kept herself in her own little world, refuse to communicate with others, ears tight with headphones, never raises her head with two big, dark eyes. Everyone tried to help her, but all the reflections on her still seemed helpless.

School bullying is the most childish behavior. They kill the students’ dreams. The teacher’s failure to understand is precisely the last step in killing the students. They did not make explanations and comforts at the appropriate time, Instead, they criticized the students blindly. I remembered once I asked Jenny, what do you think of bullying?  She said, ‘Words can hurt. They hurt me. Things were said to me that I still haven’t forgotten’.  Let’s stop school bullying together. Give love to students who had been bullied, understand them, care them, love them and encourage them to stand up and speak up for themselves.

Opinion Piece

Sports teams shouldn’t be allowed to use a First Nation’s name or caricature as their logo-(Haru)

It is common knowledge that everyone has stereotypes. What’s your first impression of aboriginal people if you haven’t seen them before? It has been a long time since the first sport team used mascots as logos or names of First Nations. Was it a correct decision? In my opinion, teams shouldn’t be allowed to use a First Nation’s name or caricature as their logo because that offenses them.

Time flies: the confliction between Aboriginal people and five sports teams (Atlanta Braves, Red Skins, Chicago Blackhawls and Edmonton Eskimos) hasn’t been reduced, only gotten worse and worse. Says that the survey “Native American mascot controversy” from Wikipedia, Native Americans are protesting for the given stereotypes based upon them because they believe all the stereotypes, whether positive or negative, are harmful because they promote false or misleading associations between a group and an attribute, fostering a disrespectful relationship. In America, Native Americans are treated differently. Just like in “Totem” by Thomas King: “Listen to that,” said Jimmy, knocking the sawdust off his pants. “It’s still making that noise” (Maybe if we ignore it, it will stop singing. It might even go away to disappear or something) (King) This two sentences showed that Native Americans are being ignored by the government. They are forced to stop learning their culture and lost a lot of rights and experienced stereotypes.

According to “Sorry for being a stereotype” by Rita Pyrills, stereotypes cause people to believe all Aboriginals are the same which stops them from learning the history of the true facts about aboriginals. Professors of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota: “Since the first Europeans made landfall in North America, native peoples have suffered under a weltering array of stereotypes, misconceptions and caricatures.” (Lumbee)   On one hand, Native American sports mascots can reinforce stereotypes in people because they tapped people in the lives they used to live and themselves they used to be; on the other hand, if the sports teams keep using the mascots or names of the Aboriginal people without permission, on contrary, stereotypes about sports teams are increasingly difficult to change because they treat Aboriginal People misrespectfully.

Last but not least, maybe some of the Native Americans do not care about using their mascots as sports teams’ logos or names, but the stereotypes people gave them still offenses them. Some aboriginal people’s identity is based on given names and images, but that’s not their true identity. Not all Native Americans are the same, but they are just like everyone else who also have dreams. Stereotypes to Native Americans are not exactly right which will somehow cause damage to them. In my opinion, sports teams should reduce using their mascots for names or logos, that’s the common decency and respect to Native Americans.

Notebook

In the movie Notebook, produced by Nicholas Sparks, the first scene focused on an old man. When he opened the book, time flashed back. A poor country boy Noah so desperately fell in love with a rich city girl, Allie. They argued a lot during the whole summer holiday, so Allie left. But they both regret for without saying goodbye to each other. Noah wrote 365 letters to Allie, Allie was terribly tempted to keep thinking about Noah. She wrote the notebook to release her emotion and fortunately, they were reunited years later. Allie remembered less because she got Alzheimer’s disease, but Noah didn’t give up on her. He started to read the notebook to Allie every day for waking up her memory. One day, Allie surprisingly went to Noah’s room because that day was their wedding anniversary. She embraced Noah and gave him a big kiss. She remembered everything and Noah. This movie shows how powerful love can overcome everything, even time and encourage everyone to pursue true love, cherish them for a whole life and believe everlasting love real exists.
