March/April Lab Reflection

Salad Rolls Lab Reflection

Why did you choose to reflect on this lab? I chose this lab because it was my favourite to make. I have never used rice paper before and I thought it was interesting that it can mold into a certain way after getting it wet.

Did you enjoy the lab? Why or why not? I enjoyed this lab because I used a lot of things that I have never used before, such as rice paper and rice cakes. I also liked that they were healthy and there are ways to make them healthier by adding more vegetables to them. Cutting the carrots diagonally was challenging because they rolled away a lot. Eventually our group figured out that if you cut them in half before cutting them they roll away less.

Did your product turn out the way you had hoped? If yes, what helped? If no, why did it not? In my opinion our final product tasted great! Rolling the rice raps was challenging because they stuck together easily and they were very fragile. The final product didn’t look as nice as they could’ve.

Did you group work well together during the lab? Why or why not? (i.e. were there any issues that came up/how did you solve them?) My group worked well together we all took on different jobs and communicated efficiently. Two people got the ingredients while the other three boiled the water and got out all of the other supplies we needed. After taking our pictures some washed the vegetables and then handed them off to the others who then cut them to fit in the salad roll. I mixed the noodles and made sure they didn’t over cook or stick to the bottom. During this time another member in our group was cutting the tails off of the shrimp. When the vegetable cutter were finished they started to make the sauce. After everything was finished we individually rapped up our own roll.

If you were to do this lab again, what might you do differently? Why? If I were to do this lab again I would add less hot sauce to the Salad Roll sauce. I would also take more time and consideration to roll up the rice raps. I would make sure I was cautious not to rip them and do my best to roll them tighter.
