I interviewed Hyerim Lee for the community connections assignment. Hyerim Lee majored in art and design at Emilica University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. The period of teaching art is eight years. Now he is teaching students at van art studio.

The reason why I chose Hyerim Lee as the interviewee is because I like Hyerim Lee’s paintings. Since Hyerim Lee has been a painter for a long time, Hyerim Lee has a lot of knowledge about painting and has a solid foundation, so all paintings are highly completed. Therefore, I respect Hyerim Lee very much.

Questions & answers:

1. Why are you passionate about your job?

Being an art educator, I am constantly thinking about the things that I can teach to my students. Through that process, I will try to learn as much as I can. It makes me grow more as an art professional. Also, when I am doing my job, it gives me the energy and satisfaction that I have achieved something. I feel thrilled about the fact that I can actually help someone so they can pursue their dream.

2. What obstacles have you faced to get you where you are today?

The main obstacle that I faced was having a lack of studio space during university life. I primarily use oil paints and it requires a workspace with well-ventilation. Of course, I had a little space at school but it was hard to work at home because of some chemicals for oil paints that I used. Right now I have my own little space to work on my paintings whenever I need.

3. What advice would you pass on to someone interested in what you are doing?

I would say be patient and brave about what you are doing.
Doing something like art, that does not have answers is difficult. But if you are patient about learning new art techniques, you will achieve so many things. Also, be brave about what you are making. Creating things that were never made is amazing.

5. What is the necessary ability to draw well?

Keenness is a key factor to draw well. Paying attention to details as much as possible is a great ability for art-makingㅋ. Finding something that others can not see is fun and special.

6. If you could go back to the past, would you like to try anything other than art?

I would probably still studied art but maybe I could have tried other majors such as communication design. I do not regret that I have chosen fine art for my major, I am really satisfied with my job. I just wish I could have studied more genres of art.

What I learned from the interview:

I felt that the interview with Hyerim Lee was a really good time. I could know a lot of information because we talked a lot. I learned a lot of really helpful information such as how to draw well and how to do my mind.
