6. What are some of the things you dislike about this job?

Politics associated with contract work in big construction projects.

7. How do you anticipate this job changing in the next 5 years or so?

There is going to be an increase of demand for this kind of work.

1. Give three reasons why you would like this job (be specific):

a)  I really like problems involving science so this job would be fun because most of these problems involving dam placement and making sure land slides don’t occur have many different ways to solve so you can get really creative with your solutions.

b) I like how you get to travel a lot, my dad has visited many cool places for work including, Utah, London, Los Angeles and much more. This would be fun because I really like to travel and see different places of the world. You also get to do field work a lot which is the installation of instrumentation in certain areas to make sure no land slides, floods or dams collapse.

c) My dad’s co-workers are super fun to be around and are really funny people. Although this job can be very serious, my dad’s co-workers are try to make their job more enjoyable and joke around a lot. They also put really cool designs around the office. For example, they put the names of Star Wars planets on the front of each office door.

2. Give three reasons why you would not like this job (be specific):

a) Although it seems to be a fun job, at times at can seem to be stressful since you need to make lots of important calls with other companies including BC Hydro and even NASA.

b) It can be stressful at times because you can very rarely make any mistakes because if you make a mistake, there is a possibility that a dam could flood or a land slide can occur. You need to be very precise and make sure your work has no errors because there can be dangerous consequences that can be worst then just you getting fired.

c) Although as I mentioned earlier, you need to travel a lot. That can be something really fun about a job but it can also be bad at times because you need to be right on time for everything and everything has a schedule that you need to follow. Also, if you have  a family, it can be hard sometimes because sometimes you can be gone for many months.

3. Is this job for you? Why or why not

I think although this wouldn’t be my first choice in a future career, I would enjoy doing this job because a lot of the things you do are things that I really enjoy to do at school too such as problem solving with science. I would also enjoy this job because I think I would be really good at it because my favorite subject in school is science so I would like to have a job the revolves around sciences such as Geology, Physics or Biology. My dad’s job is mainly focused on geology which I think is one of my favorites because I always found it easy to understand in class.

4. Explain the value of the TOKTW experience in relation to your ideas about your post secondary (after high school) plans (education?, training?, travel?, work?).

From a very young age, I have always wanted to pursue a career in architecture, although this is not exactly related to what my dad is doing for his job, some of the things I need to learn in post secondary can be similar to what my dad did. This is because for architecture, you need to make sure that a building and design is stable and will hold under pressure or slight shaking. You also need to make sure that the building can resist in all weather conditions depending on where the location of the building will be. This science can be similar to what my dad does for work except for dams instead of buildings.
