What Literature Has Taught Me About The Effects Of Racism

Some effects that racism has had on humanity are suicide, alcoholism, and hate. In Indian House and Sugar Falls, both main characters watch kids commit suicide. In Indian horse, Saul watches a girl named Rebecca commit suicide. Rebecca stabbed herself in her stomach because her sister Katherine died from the beatings from the nuns and priest. In Sugar, Falls Kouom was asked if she wanted to escape the residential schools. Kouom replied saying “No” because her father had told her to stay in the residential schools. Kouom’s Friends all left and tried to swim away from the school. Many of them didn’t make it too far before they drown in front of Kouom’s eyes. In Indian House, Saul started becoming an alcoholic because he had suffered so much racism and abuse and when you drink a lot you end up forgetting what happened. From all the racism Saul had a hatred for those people that said racist things about him and beat them up. Suicide Alcoholism and hate are just a few things that affect people from racism.

Privilege

Privilege

“The time has come,” said the Masai Warrior. “You all must get on the bus,” I did not know this at the time, but after the next few hours, my life would change forever.

I am in Africa with my family, on a trip of a lifetime. We are in the Masai Mara, Kenya. As we are traveling through the African plains, I am thinking “Why do we have to go to the school? I am supposed to be on vacation!”
As we are driving down the dirt roads, the school comes into sight. I can’t believe my eyes. The school we see is tiny. Jackson, our Masai warrior guide, tell us “They fit 45 students to a classroom and they sit 3 to a desk.”
I am shocked. The classroom looks like it can fit 15 people maximum and the desks are made out of wood and are decomposing. My mom seems curious about what the school is made out of because it doesn’t look like “normal” mud.
“What is the school made out?” asks my mom.
“ The school is made out of mud sticks and cow dung which means when it rains the walls get washed away leaving gaps.” replies Jackson.
I am observing the classroom and can see that there are not a lot of school supplies like paper and pencils. Some children would have to draw on the ground with sticks. My school has very spacious classrooms and has an average 24 students per class. Each student gets their own desk made out of metal and MDF. The school is built out of bricks, cement and is tested for earthquakes, so it is as safe as possible. Each class also has there own projector and each student has their own device for school work.

Jackson is telling our group that getting to school in the Masai Mara is a big struggle because parents do not have any cars for transportation so most children will walk.
“The average walk time to school for a child is 2 hours.” said the Masai Warrior
Now that seems like a long time for us to walk but they have to walk the 2 hours on the uneven rocky ground. The walk is also hazardous because of wild animals around like elephants, lions, and wildebeest. I realize how lucky I am to have public transportation that can take me to school. If I walked, it really isn’t that far and I would have good runners to do it in. Also, I don’t have to worry too much about wild animals we only have to keep a lookout for bears and our wild teachers.

After stopping I see a teacher from the school approaching.
“Not all of the children of the Masai Mara get to go to school. A lot of the children that live in the Masai Mara have to work with their families,” said the teacher.
As I look around at the houses around the school I witness the children getting buckets of water for food and crops, feeding and tending to the animals, working in the garden and helping fix the little wood and cow dung hut they live in. “For the children that do go to school most will only be at the school until they are grade 8 because after grade 8 you must pay for schooling which most families can’t afford,” said Jackson
“The students that do have the privilege to go to school past grade 8 understood and how big of a privilege it was to go to school and they were constantly studying,” said the teacher.
I realize in Canada, we have free public schools up to grade 12. Since it is the law that every child must be enrolled in some education, I did not understand how big of a privilege it is to go to school.

As we near the end of our trip my perspective on school and life is changing dramatically. I used to not care too much for school but now I realize how much schools means and the importance of studying. The trip also taught me that the harder you work in school now, will get you farther in the future. I also realized not to take anything for granted anymore because some of the children there may never have the chance to get a formal education. I appreciate you Mrs Thomasen!

Something I can work on is not telling the story but showing the story.

Something I did very well at was I had a good purpose.

How Does One Help A Child In Times Of Hardship?

In the poem, “What Do You Remember Of The Evacuation,” by Joy Kogawa, a little six-year-old Japanese girl is taken away in British Columbia during the Second World War with her family on a train to evacuation camps . Her parents do not tell her where they are going because it would frighten the girl. Instead, they let the girl think that it is a vacation they are about to take. Although her parents did not tell her anything, she hears from other people they had to leave everything behind including pets for this trip. Teachers from her town give her games and puzzles for the train ride. While they are going through the mountains, her imagination envisions a giant, and her mother tells her that she believes that the giant is there for the little girl’s comfort. Even when the war was over, and she returned to Canadian society, she was still mistreated by other Canadian children because the Canadian children thought that the Japanese were bad people.
This poem shows one can help a child cope with hardship in a couple of different ways. One way is by telling them they are about to embark on an adventure rather than telling the truth about the atrocities that are really occurring. In the poem, the young girl states“ Although I was so excited I still couldn’t sleep.”(line 8) She also says “Careful my parents were not to bruise us with bitterness.” (line 30) Another way you can help a child cope with difficult circumstances is by distracting them with games. Before the girl left for her adventure, there were two ladies “Who gave me a puzzle to play with on the train.” These were two ways this child managed to cope with the hardship of being sent to the evacuation camps in British Columbia during World War II. One can help a child in times of hardship by distracting them from what is going on around them.

I did awesome on nothing.

I need to improve on clarity of writing and style, critical thinking, use of enhancements, mechanics quotes in MLA format citations, organization and quality of quotes.

The Keg is a wonderful place to eat with friends and family. As soon as the ginormous double doors open, a calming effect and satisfying feeling emerges from the building. The waitresses are extremely friendly and always ready to help. The booths are spacious and can comfortably fit three people on each side. It isn’t noisy at the restaurant like most would expect but it is very quiet. Only a little chatter is still heard. Everything on the menu is described very well like their steak dinner. You think that you could almost taste it as you read the words. As soon as the order is taken by the waitress, everyone is eager to get their food. When the sizzling steak meal is on the table, and after the first bite, emotions flow through the body from head to toes. The food looks absolutely stunning. The steak is crispy and bursting with flavor. The mash potatoes are creamy and soft. The vegetables are cooked to perfection with the outside being a little charred. The fries are crispy and perfectly salted to make the flawless dinner. Now I wouldn’t say that this is an inexpensive meal, but it isn’t the most costly restaurant meal either. When you have a lot of people, it can get a little pricey, but it is definitely worth it.

First They Came For…

Adapted from  the poem by Martin Nienoller “First They Came for the Jews” in response to the poem “Danger of Silence”

First they came for…. (rewrite your poem)

First they came for  Asians
But I didn’t speak out
Because I was not a Asian.

First they came for  Muslims
But I didn’t speak out
Because I was not a Muslim

First they came for  refuges
But I didn’t speak out
Because I was not a refuge.

Now when will they come for me                                                                                 because I was too busy or too apathetic                                                                 to defend my sisters and brothers?

Where does one find beauty in the face of extreme conflict?

Where  does one finds beauty in the face of extreme conflict?

One can find beauty in conflict by looking at what they will learn from the conflict and how they will be able to change themselves so the conflict may not happen again.  One can also find beauty in conflict by thinking about how it will change things in a good way because everything that happens has something good in it for one to learn.

The Book/Movie Holes is a very good representation of this question because the main character in the book has many things go wrong in his life. The main character has to look for all of the positive parts in the bad situations to keep his hopes up.

What kind of conflict?

What is beauty?

Can one find beauty?

Humans need friends/ Humans need companions

Humans want to learn/ seek knowledge

Human need to express their emotions

Humans can be ignorant and should be more aware

Humans fight for what they believe in

Humans have conflict/war

Humans prevail despite conflict

Humans may abuse power

Humans evolve

Humans want to be remembered because most like recognition

Humans disagree

Humans are discriminatory/racist

Humans like to make our lives easier and better

Humans like to help and fight against  perceived injustice

Humans are curious and seek knowledge

The book Holes is written by Louis Sachar. The book is about a boy who finds a pair of sneaker that fell off a bridge  as he was walking home. The police drove by and stopped stopped him and arrested him for stealing a famous basketballs players shoes. The boy was then taken to a place in the wilderness instead of jail and at his place they would have to dig a big hole in the ground everyday.  They eventually found out he wasn’t guilty and let him go home after many events happening in the wilderness. So the lesson I learned is not to get mad because things in your life go wrong but most of the time it will work out in the end.
