Surface Area of a Sphere Math 10 H 2017

During today’s Math Honors class we conducted an experiment which calculated the surface area of a sphere. We used the circumference of the oranges cut in half lengthwise and traced them on to a piece of paper. Then using the orange peels we filled in the circles to prove what the surface area would be. We were able to determine that the peels filled four complete circles without overlapping or leaving significant empty spaces. In conclusion, we determined that the formula for surface area of a sphere is 4\pi r^2. Overall, I believe that this experiment was very useful and interesting, allowing me to better understand the concept.
