Pre-Calc 11, Week 3 – Absolute Values

This unit in Pre-calc 11 we have learned about Absolute Values and Radicals.

An absolute number is described as “The Principle square root of the square of a number.” This may seem complicated but really absolute numbers are quite simple if we use a number line as a visual aid.

|-7| on the number line will be here

|——-|-7|——-0—————|

the 7 will be the same distance from 0 whether it is positive or negative, this means the absolute value of -7 will be 7.

Another way to determine an absolute value is to find the principal square root of the square of a number. For example, |-7| then \sqrt{(-7)}^2 thenĀ \sqrt{49} which equals 7
