Purpose

The purpose of this experiment was to observe and comment on a chemical reaction.

Procedure

To see thee full procedure please refer to 3-3C “Observing Changes in Matter”

We differed from the original labs in a few aspects

1. We changed the reactants from lithium carbonate to sodium carbonate and from calcium chloride to strontium chloride.
2. We put reactants in the beaker before filtering them instead of using   test tube.
3. We used an inoculation loop to dip into the product of the reactant instead of a  wooden stick.

 

We got sodium carbonate and strontium chloride and put them into the beacker.

 

Today we did a lab on chemical change. We mixed Sodium Carbonate (Reactant A) and strontium chloride (Reactant B) and then put it through a filter.

  1. Reactant A is white, clear ad it does not seem to have any scent. Reactant B is white, clear and also does not have a scent. We mixed the 2 reactants and put through the filter it made a new compound. Compound: It is white with a paste texture. It is opaque and smells but is recognizable to me.

After we mixed the 2 reactants and when it was filtered we took it to the Bunsen burner. We lit it and we used the inoculation loop and put it in the compound.

It is white and opaque, in the form of a powder.

It produced a orange-yellow colour

Sr


White and opaque in the form of a powder and oderlesss.

It produced an red colour.

 

Unknown compound from reactant 1 and 2:

It produced an orange flame.

Analsys

We used Sodium carbonate and strontium chloride this means that when mixed they became Sr(CO3)2.   (Strontium carbonate) or 
NaCl (Sodium Chloride).

Conclusion 

In the end I believe that sodium carbonate which created and orage-yellow flame played a more important role in the chemical change. The colour of the flame was orange which was similar to that of sodium carbonate. That would mean that we created Sodium carbonate instead of Strontium chloride.
