Tech Team Semester Reflection

  • What are some things you have learned and/or tasks you have accomplished this semester? What are some things you have been involved with supporting the school?

Throughout this semester (2 quarters) I have learned quite a few things with COVID-19 going around. Having to change our ways to be able to help people with technology problems. So far though I have accomplished and mastered the Cricut Machine, obtained a good understanding of the 3d printer and continued to stay after school almost everyday to help anyone who needs technology help. I have helped almost everyone who is in the maker space trying to make their project designs on the circuit. Also I have helped with events around the school that needed technology in order for them to be broadcasted.

Don’t have a Kirby mask because someone wanted it and I gave it away.

(The layered mask)

  • What aspects of your work are successful? Explain why.

For the cricut machines I was able to figure out how to use the machine in a quick and good manner. I was able to use those skills that I obtained to help others which helps my initiative taking and skills when communicating with others because you want to make sure you help to the best of your ability and so that they can get the product that they want.

  • What aspects of your work is challenging? Explain why.

The most challenging thing that happened this semester is when I was trying to make the layered masks. This is because when you are trying to layer, there is a chance that you melt the bottom layer too much and it will result in a bad product.

  • What step did you take to overcome these challenges/ what adjustments did you need to make?

To be able to overcome this I had to use certain colors. Darker ones in particular because the darker ones have a higher melting point hence reducing the amount of possible melting that comes from it. I also had to do a lot of temperature changes if I didn’t use the darker colors. The product ended up great but there was a lot of troubles to get to that point.

  • Is there anything you can do to improve? (With your approach to the project, altering the project)

I would say before I get to a point of no return to make sure I look at the colors that you would use. This is because I tried to make a kirby but it ended looking real bad since I used white on the bottom and the low melting point messed up a lot. So knowing and thinking ahead of what color adjustments I could do would do a lot.

  • As Riverside continues to immerse itself into innovation and technology, what do you think Riverside can do to provide support and help for teachers and students? (Provide specific examples)

If I remember it would be something similar I said last year which would be make sure the teachers feel more and more familiar with their technology so they can go at a good and smooth pace. I feel like people are too afraid to go to the wave to ask for help so a good thing would be to possibly find a way encourage people to go even when its a small problem. Also have people at the wave that can fix the very hard problems. Marcus and I had to spend like an hour to try and fix a persons computer since every single time something opened it corrupted and broke. (Have people who understand computers in depth) (Uninstall and reinstall didn’t work)

  • Do you have any feedback or suggestions, as we move forward, that could help the Tech Team meet the needs of our school and staff/ be more effective? (provide specific examples)

Not much other then have people at the wave who can excel and help fix issues anytime in the day.

Christmas Cricut Assignment

I have created the very first layered mask at Riverside. This was really tough and a pain to do but it was worth it. (4 layers)

  • What are some things that were challenging?

The main thing that was challenging for me was the layering when creating this. Since you have to heat press it at a very high temperature there is a chance that the vinyl on the very bottom may melt and if the pieces were too small it would smudge.

  • What are some things that worked well?

When creating the mask that has 4 layers. The thing that worked is pressing the mask 295 degrees Fahrenheit instead of 325 degrees Fahrenheit to make sure it doesn’t melt or for it to melt less. The layering on top of each other worked really well.

  • What did you learn? How can you apply this?

I learnt how to use the Cricut and how we can use this in many different areas. We can apply this to Movember with the masks and the stickers. Make special designs for advertising things and many more.

Halloween Photoshop Assignment

Hahahah yes.

The main thing that was challenging was using the tool to blend in photos. Just adding them doesn’t look that good. You need to blend it slightly so it doesn’t look too out of place. But when you blend it you have to blend it in the right direction otherwise it looks weird and the photo feels off.

Some of the things that worked well is tracing and the idea of the photo that I did. That is was the easiest since all you are doing is getting the photo out of the original photo.

Since I did photoshop stuff in grade 9 for my computers class I didn’t learn too much other than a good refresher to using it again. It can be used in future stuff to help brand stuff. Or maybe help make a new logo. All the small stuff that will add up in a project.

Smudge tool is extremely useful. As well as the gradient tool. (tip)

Semester Reflection

  • What are some things you have learned and/or tasks you have accomplished this semester? (Use videos, pictures, upload materials etc. as evidence of learning in your blog)

First of all some of the successful things that I have accomplished would be the microbits after long hard working I have got myself to a very high understanding of the microbits. There was many different tasks that stood in my way but I pushed through and learned many different ways to use the microbits. But on the side note being on the streaming team has many issues of stuff like microphone not working camera errors and many more but we got to a working conclusion.

This video with the micobits working. Very simple but why good feeling getting 2 lights working. This is just the beginning of what you can possibly do with the microbits.

Also this video here is the stream. The angle is not the best but good enough to show the whole court.

  • What aspects of your work are successful? Explain why.

For the mircobits was to be able to know how the microbits work so that I could help other people with making their own lights like the neopixel and the fashion class. I was able to help them so that they could replicate it themselves and that means more independence and shows that what I did was useful and will help people. Also streaming the red surge volleyball tournament was a success because we were able to get a high quality stream that helps people watch their own children play and be proud of them.

  • What aspects of your work is challenging? Explain why.

The most challenging part was when the issues when a piece of code didn’t work or some other side problems that had lots of issues which possibly held up the person when I was trying to help them causing a delay and thus wasting time. Also the streaming of the tournament when the software glitches out and everything crashes and gotta go back and figure out the issues since there was lots of errors when 1 happens. 1 error usually causes many errors.

  • What steps did you take to overcome these challenges / what adjustments did you need to make?

Some of the ways that I overcame the microbit problems would be changing the code which almost replicated what they wanted since the other way didn’t work and so that they would be able to get their project done and actually be satisfied with it. Also for the streaming it would be a lot of trial and error using lots of reasoning because we needed patience but also to get the stream to go back up because people wanted to actually watch the stream and so on.

  • Is there anything you can do improve? (with your approach to the project, or altering the project)

I would say be a bit more prepared because it takes a lot to get things to work in a short period of time. (Applies to both microbit and streaming) To possibly improve would be to get new equipment for streaming like working Ethernet cord and so on.

  • As Riverside continues to immerse itself into innovation and technology, what do you think Riverside can do to provide support and help for teachers and students? (Provide specific examples)

Have teachers that are very familiar with their technology to get the best possible pace and to also have a good amount of people at the wave that knows how to fix things to help provide computer support to make sure people don’t get stressed out with missing projects (1 person had a missing file and I went through and fixed it).

  • Do you have any feedback or suggestions, as we move forward, that could help the Tech Team meet the needs of our school and staff / be more effective? (Provide specific examples)

I would definitely say for the streaming would be the equipment and to have better places to stream stuff because right now it is very difficult because sometimes we have to stream at places that are not the best in terms of safety or just have to many obstructions.
