- What are some things you have learned and/or tasks you have accomplished this semester? (Use videos, pictures, upload materials etc. as evidence of learning in your blog)
First of all some of the successful things that I have accomplished would be the microbits after long hard working I have got myself to a very high understanding of the microbits. There was many different tasks that stood in my way but I pushed through and learned many different ways to use the microbits. But on the side note being on the streaming team has many issues of stuff like microphone not working camera errors and many more but we got to a working conclusion.
This video with the micobits working. Very simple but why good feeling getting 2 lights working. This is just the beginning of what you can possibly do with the microbits.
Also this video here is the stream. The angle is not the best but good enough to show the whole court.
- What aspects of your work are successful? Explain why.
For the mircobits was to be able to know how the microbits work so that I could help other people with making their own lights like the neopixel and the fashion class. I was able to help them so that they could replicate it themselves and that means more independence and shows that what I did was useful and will help people. Also streaming the red surge volleyball tournament was a success because we were able to get a high quality stream that helps people watch their own children play and be proud of them.
- What aspects of your work is challenging? Explain why.
The most challenging part was when the issues when a piece of code didn’t work or some other side problems that had lots of issues which possibly held up the person when I was trying to help them causing a delay and thus wasting time. Also the streaming of the tournament when the software glitches out and everything crashes and gotta go back and figure out the issues since there was lots of errors when 1 happens. 1 error usually causes many errors.
- What steps did you take to overcome these challenges / what adjustments did you need to make?
Some of the ways that I overcame the microbit problems would be changing the code which almost replicated what they wanted since the other way didn’t work and so that they would be able to get their project done and actually be satisfied with it. Also for the streaming it would be a lot of trial and error using lots of reasoning because we needed patience but also to get the stream to go back up because people wanted to actually watch the stream and so on.
- Is there anything you can do improve? (with your approach to the project, or altering the project)
I would say be a bit more prepared because it takes a lot to get things to work in a short period of time. (Applies to both microbit and streaming) To possibly improve would be to get new equipment for streaming like working Ethernet cord and so on.
- As Riverside continues to immerse itself into innovation and technology, what do you think Riverside can do to provide support and help for teachers and students? (Provide specific examples)
Have teachers that are very familiar with their technology to get the best possible pace and to also have a good amount of people at the wave that knows how to fix things to help provide computer support to make sure people don’t get stressed out with missing projects (1 person had a missing file and I went through and fixed it).
- Do you have any feedback or suggestions, as we move forward, that could help the Tech Team meet the needs of our school and staff / be more effective? (Provide specific examples)
I would definitely say for the streaming would be the equipment and to have better places to stream stuff because right now it is very difficult because sometimes we have to stream at places that are not the best in terms of safety or just have to many obstructions.
- What is the name of the device you have chosen?
The device that I have chosen is the neopixel lights. There are many other things that I have done with the micro bits like make music. (An attempt to make Despacito) and also made a fan using the micro bit cricket and many more.
2. What is it used for? Can it be used for other things in a classroom setting?
What the majority of the micro bit project was me making and helping/setting up the code for the neopixel lights. With these lights you can make a variety of different types of lights that can glow in a rainbow, single colors, pulsate all different types. This can be used in a classroom setting like with the fashion club. They needed lights with certain colors on their costumes they made. With the neopixel lights they are able to make the color that they want to be able to get so their costume will look good and so that they can get the best possible mark.
3. What code did you use and what does it do? (Pictures or video’s please)
This code with the neopixel extension show that 1 of the lights will shift in different colors while the other slowly goes in a rainbow. This here is a simple look at what little code can have a huge effect on a project to give it a pop or anything really just to improve the project. Like as you go on you can make something like this (Below)
4. Can you think of any other meaningful ways micro:bits can be used in previous and/or current classes you have taken? Please think about this and explain how and where you think micro:bits can be used.
Looking back at my past classes I feel like they could have been used in addition with some of my power tech classes and science classes. More specifically in my rube Goldberg projects. This could have enhanced the looks of the board or be used as one of the features that could be given like sound loud enough to knock something over or maybe something like a fan to blow over something to keep the machine going to make sure it doesn’t end and end up as a failure. This could also be something very useful if you are running out of ideas so in this case it would be perfect to add to go above expectations with extra things too. Impress your teacher with some basic coding skills too.
What I have learned in this mini project is the costs of the house with investments, renting, buying and more. There is also many more fees when you are doing purchases for both sides and the costs can be very, very heavy. But on the upside you can earn money as time goes on since the values of the house can go up depending on how good shape you keep it etc. But also you can have horrible and crappy neighbors which can make everything worse in the end because of what disasters they can do. For me I would buy a house because in the end if I were to own it for a very long time I would be earning more money from it. It may cost more every month but in the end it would be in my benefit to buy a house because of many reasons. Like more privacy and its your home so you can do anything you want.
Absolute disaster… Everything in the video corrupted but recovered 🙂
Impact: How might this idea positively impact the social and emotional well being of students/our school? What can be done to increase the impact of this idea?
Like how I say it and also my parents which is there is always room for improvement. So this means that in streams like spoken word it can help those people to see what they could’ve done better so that if they are a grade 11 and going to grade 12 the year after they would know exactly what to do for the best possible chances etc. This is the same for high level soccer etc. It will positively impact for the students because their parents can see it too if they aren’t able to make it and show it to their grandparents too to show their great achievements of the year because only the top speakers are chosen. Since we are streaming all the large events it would be very nice and better to have a better mic for some occasions and also camera with better quality (more pixels) to make it look better since the Red Surge steam the camera quality was not the best.
Desirability: What could you change to make this idea more desirable to students, teachers, administrators, parents or the community?
A few things that would make it more desirable for students is having a better platform to advertise the streams on because the YouTube channel is well… lets just say a bit dead and not that active with not many people looking at it like Instagram and other apps since people use them all the time for new updates and such. Also like above the camera quality. With better camera quality it could make it more desirable for students, teachers, admins and parents to watch it because a lot of times the bad camera quality ruins the watch ability and moves those people away from the video/stream because after awhile it hurts their eyes and they just cant watch it anymore. (Just imagine watching a video at 144p)
Integratability: What would you change to make this idea easier to integrate into a school setting? How can we keep it from being seen as an “add-on”?
Some ways would be the teachers showing it in their class because its English being spoken by the top people in the school so this here is showing a good example to the other students that are maybe not so good at English and helps them with their English vocabulary which will make the school look better. The streams turn into videos after the stream ends so this means it could be used as a possible vocab sheet for yourself from taking key words from the presentation and to be able to use it in your own presentation. Because even if you are there watching you might not remember much so this would be a perfect reminder to go back to get more info. 1 more is having the social media team to post it on Instagram to be able to help advertise it earlier so that we have a better chance to get more views to show the importance of the stream which can be used as a reminder for past times for yourself to show how much you have improved over time.
Feasibility/Viability: What would you change to make this idea more feasible or viable? Think: e.g lower the cost, make it more sustainable, make it easier to implement etc.
Well first of all the main issue is the schedule for it. We need enough time ahead to be able to setup and to get ready for it because some events that I wont name. We were given less then 24 hours to prep which is not enough time because we don’t have enough time to get everything we need. Also sustainability would be having even more trained people because just doing it with a small group can be hard sometimes because sometimes we don’t have people available and if we don’t have anyone there to record it wont go that well. Like Red Surge when we didn’t have someone on Saturday so it didn’t look nice at all compared to Friday with people there.
a) Briefly describe your new and improved idea, by incorporating ideas and/or feedback.
Well some of the simple and main ideas would be to have communication with the social media team right here and there. Also with feedback and such since we had bits of positive feedback it would be better to have better equipment since as the school tech gets better it feels like our streaming gear is not going anywhere. Anything to help raise the quality of the stream so this could be even having a mic stationed somewhere closer to the game or speaker to have better quality since a lot of times the stream can just hear us with lots of muffing from all the loud sounds around and not the actual game.
b) Answer the following questions:
– What problems might we run into?
Well since getting equipment has an expensive price tag to it and the organization it takes to be able to get everything going. With all the extra equipment it would take a lot more time to setup and maintain because if something isn’t near us or we are not paying attention to it some could steal it putting is in a bad spot because equipment being stolen isn’t something that we want.
– What skills do we need to complete this project? How can we attain these skills?
This would be mainly communication and proper moderation of the equipment which means someone will have to be there but at the same time to be able to troubleshoot these issues if a piece of equipment goes wrong and has a malfunction
c) Create a brief timeline of key things that need to happen to ensure successful completion of your project. What happens next?
Since a lot of times streams are a pop up and a lot of it depends on the school budget because all of the new equipment it could be very costly. Once we get a date of what to stream we get everything ready to stream with meetings and so that everyone is up to date to see what we can do better next. hopefully we can get all of the equipment and everything that we need by the end of this school year
